Yea that was my biggest question too. Get the game out of the way completely then announce it.

Or maybe ABC wanted to be the first one to announce the tragic/sad/bad news.

Well that's the thing, they were still going to be the first to announce it. The game ended literally 30 seconds later. Seemed like a weird decision to call one more play, then announce his death, then have to go back into football mode and call the crucial field goal attempt.
