Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (best RTS! videos inside)

benjeesays...

Brendotroy: watch the 20 minute presentation at GC06 for more gameplay...I posted this one as it's the first trailer with gameplay footage; the other seven videos show more of the storyline (FMV) and in-game graphics/features (the presentation goes into alot more detail on the units themselves, rather than the 'buildings' seen in-game).

brendotroysays...

Benjee: Heh, I don't doubt at all that C&C 3 has detailed gameplay, lots of units, etc. The quality (and zoom level) of the graphics definitely looks exciting.
I was just commenting on this particular video, in which all we get to see of the actual gameplay, just about, is buildings being destroyed. You can't really deny that, can you? I'm sure they wanted to show off their advanced environmental destruction physics or something, but it winds up looking funny ... "Command & Conquer 3: it's like 'Rampage', but newer and more expensive. Oh, and fewer Godzillas."

Farhad2000says...

Terrible. Dismal. Pathetic. No these are not descriptions of Benjee from women around the world. But rather my feelings towards the C&C3 franchise. It looks every bit the rehash C&C Generals was. Everyone knows the next great RTS will be Supreme Commander by Chris Taylor, of the Total Annihilation series.

But I'll upvote for the sheer joy these games used to give me back in the day, the original Command and Conquer and Red Alert 1. Oh Tanya, oh NOD obelisk, Oh the memories.

benjeesays...

Yeah: the original 'gameplay' video (above) was a little disappointing due to them changing various units near the end of development (as said in the presentation). I think the story FMV makes up for the slightly bland in-game shots...and the second is much better - but I thought the first is a logical place to start (especially for the story since the orginal). I'll change the link to the Gameplay Trailer #2 (with Kane, also linked above) if Sifters prefer it?

And Supreme Commander looks OK Farhad...but C&C will always be the original, and the best in my opinion (despite the fact Westwood Studios is now under EA!) Plus, as you said: "Oh Tanya, oh NOD obelisk, Oh the memories" - well Kane & his Obelisk of Lightare back!

Farhad2000says...

Supreme Commander looks OK? Only a man who doesn't play RTS games would say something as ridiculous as that. C&C has been in the dumps for a long time, and it's primarily because they have never really progressed with the times. This was the case with C&C: Tiberian Sun, always very safe games so much so they ended up being dull. This is the same thing C&C3 is doing. They said it themselves "going back the basics". Am sorry but I don't see myself going back to checkers after playing chess.

I'm really not going to get myself into yet another argument with you Farhad - so here's the one point I'm making:

As I said Command & Conquer is the original and best RTS (it created the genre)...I believe it was also the first for full 3D detailed graphics, first for ships, first for underground vehicles & first for dogs! (to name just a few!)

I think the graphics for Supreme Commander seem a little bland, like they had to sacrifice detail (such as full DX9/10 Texture & Lighting etc) to achieve the scalability. I'll look into when both games are being released, maybe it's earlier in development...

Farhad2000says...

Some facts you lost along the way:

* The game that created the RTS genre was Dune II. Stonkers if you want to be anal retentive.

* The original Command and Conquer used sprites for graphics.

* As the paragon example of gameplay refinement, Cavedog Entertainment's acclaimed Total Annihilation from 1997 distilled the core mechanics of Command & Conquer, and introduced the first 3D units in real-time strategy games. A significant achievement in the days before graphics cards with hardware based 3D acceleration became commonplace.

C&C3 will be a good game, but Supreme Commander will be a great game. And this is not fanboyism, it's a conclusion I reached after watching both games being demoed, and seeing what each one is setting out to achieve.

Kruposays...

I hope they take their sweet time developing both games as I hardly have enough time to play the games I got this year.

The C&C series has had a good storyline which made up for the more generic aspects of some of the gameplay in the latter sequels. I didn't even try Tiberian Sun but I just picked it up for $2 because I figured that's a fair price.

archchefsays...

I love the original C&C series, I love RTS games. I hate EA though. They are cramming ads into games and selling stripped down games only to sell "ad-ons" to the customers later. The only EA game that I see myself buying any time in the future is Spore.

marinarasays...

EA has really let me down lately. I never want to buy another EA game, but C&C may just make me reconsider!

Those games were always awesome, really made my pulse pound and kept me on my toes!

Hell, there's no count of the hours I wasted with C&C but I'm not regretting it.

Despite only mediocre beta tester impressions? I'd add my own comments but the game browser that GPG has implemented is just about unusable, I've been in the beta for two weeks and I have never successfully joined a game. I still hold out hope for the game but so far the buzz from people who have actually played isn't that positive.

Farhad2000says...

scottishmartialarts, it is after all a beta. But if you read above:

"C&C3 will be a good game, but Supreme Commander will be a great game. And this is not fanboyism, it's a conclusion I reached after watching both games being demoed, and seeing what each one is setting out to achieve."
