Closest Thing to Unicorns: White Deer Herd

LiveLeak: 'This is a GREAT clip of a herd of white deer (buck included) that live on an empty military base in New York State. A litte history; they started out as whitetails and in 1941 the conservation area was fenced in containing several whitetail deer, one of which carried the recessive "white" gene. Protection from the fence and population control by the military has allowed the herd to grow to over 200 white deer.

A news item about the herd called them 'the closest thing to unicorns' in 2006'

I'm all about environmental conservation; very happy that I live quite near the NY Forest Preserve; but I'm finding a hard time supporting a plan to protect these deer.

We're not talking about a unique species. White deer are born in normal, unprotected habitats. I imagine they're popular targets not only for hunters, as the website mentions, but also for predators. They don't exactly blend in.

Let them go free. Let nature take its course. Vote "no" on the Seneca White Deer bailout plan.
