Cats on a balcony

Yeah, they're cats and all but they can still fall.

That's an interesting effect. If you don't have any control (or don't think you do), you get afraid, but let's say you know damn-well your 'ladder' is safely harnessed to the roof, up you go without a care in the world.

By the way, there's a ledge just below the balcony where a cat could easily land. All I'm wondering about is what happens if a bird happens a little too close --out goes a paw, down goes the cat.

I thought this was a sequel to Snakes on a Plane for a minute.

The only ledge I saw was a few inches thick and I don't think my cats could land on it reliably. I get nervous when they go out on a window sill one floor off the ground, I couldn't stand this. I actually had a cat who fell off such a window sill, he just got up and walked off at the bottom but it scared the fuck out of me.

They fall off frequently enough that the condition, if they're lucky enough to survive, is called "high-rise syndrome." On the cat's medical record it would read "HRS" and they would typically arrive at the vet's emergency room with front legs broken from being jammed into the ground, broken jaws and facial bones, and air in the chest cavity, for starters. Cats who fall from higher floors have a better survival rate because they have time to "right" themselves and make a less injurious landing.

it looks really bad and i wouldnt allow my cats to do that, but - a cat is safer falling from a very high floor than anything just above 1 floor. seems unlikely but they fall something like a 1/3 of the speed we would, and as lisacat said ' Cats who fall from higher floors have a better survival rate because they have time to "right" themselves and make a less injurious landing.' but i guess landing on concrete isnt natural
