Bride Snatching in Kyrgystan

It's reported here that about half of all marriages in Kyrgystan, a primarily muslim country, take place by kidnapping/ abducting women. Needless to say, this is so f---ed up, so watch and learn.

Does this have anything to do with Islam? True, it's Muslim country, but this is part of the country's culture regardless of their Islamitic religion in my opinion. Having said that, this tradition is against all (western and probably most eastern) human rights. Good post anyways

Actually, strict Islamic custom and law dictates that the woman approve of a marriage before it is made... this doesn't stop a family from arranging one for her in order to solidify tribal ties or facilitate economic advancement, but at least she has the right of refusal... so I don't think Islam itself makes this 'acceptable', rather it is the local tribal traditions that predate the importation of Islam that work to override this ethos, such as in Kyrgystan, Afghanistan, or among other Central Asian cultures, where local rules claim precedent to Islamic rules.
