Brian Cox - Is There a HIGGS?

[BRIAN COX:] There are two sets of questions I am asking myself. One set for the scientific questions, the research that I do, but the other set, which is beginning to bother me more and more is why as a civilization we spend so little time and so little money and so little effort learning about the way the universe works. For example, the average government investment in science in the Western world is about 0.4 percent of GDP. It depends which way you look at it—I know in Britain the science budget about 3.5 billion pounds a year—so you can work that out.

Wow! Was that really 21 minutes long? It only felt like about four because I was so totally drawn in. I could have listened to that all day.

Is there any more of this?

For those that are interested - This video is a video prepared for "The Edge"

"Edge Foundation, Inc., was established in 1988 as an outgrowth of a group known as The Reality Club. Its informal membership includes of some of the most interesting minds in the world. The mandate of Edge Foundation is to promote inquiry into and discussion of intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and literary issues, as well as to work for the intellectual and social achievement of society." - http://www.edge.org

This is a brilliant place for anyone who likes to stay in touch with intellectual ideas, discussions and look into the opinions of some of the brightest minds in the world. I'm a regular lurker there. It's mostly reading (some video) but has completely engaging ideas and topics.

I liked this video. Normally, i'm not a big fan of brian cox. He's on british tv a lot and many people find his manner annoying, myself included - putting heavy expression into every single word in order to make up for his lack of ability to instill his own awe onto you.

But here, it seemed like he was off guard and just talking, and it transformed him. I wish he'd do that more.

we spend so little time and effort because not everyone really has the convergence of interest, ability, time, tools, experience, to really push the sciences forward.

not everyone gets a chance to play the game, so to speak. its about access and freedom of information. you never know who will put the pieces together and how, but they need the chance.
