Alan Watts - Freedom from determinism

YT: "Alan watts explains that although we are determined by prior causes, these causes by no means explain or control our behavior. In order to become free then, we must realize that in actuality, each of our present moments really starts NOW."

That is the problem of choosing a flawed model to explain determinism. What is trying to attack is the western idea of reason with the eastern ideas of...well absurdity. And I don't mean absurdity in an insulting way, but it is usually used in philosophy, self contradictory. Mostly because they use reason to disprove reason, which isn't reasonable. The only reason he can use language to explain his point is because of a past looking nature in him which helps him to explain his point not only to us, but to himself. His complex awareness don't steam from only the present, but from the past dipping into his present thoughts and for him to consider them. WEST RULES EAST DRULES!

Good video none the less, I shall upvote.

^ You are missing it entirely. Watts is not talking about aggregation, but cause. The aggregation of stuff that you would call a self is no doubt a product of the things which make it up, but your choice to behave one way or another is an instantaneous action.

I think he misses the whole point on why we come up with explanations for current actions. The reason is that if a sequence of actions in the past led to a negative outcome in present. Then we want to work on breaking the pattern, and changing our actions, so that the future outcomes would be better.

Explanation != Justification
