18 Things That Actually Exist

TheSluiceGate says...

OK, so here's the thing:
- Taily wags when your excited, not when you're happy: it reacts to heart rate.
- That's not a flying lawnmower, that's a remote control single-wing model aircraft built to look like a lawnmower. There's a propeller on the front. It cannot cut grass.
- Babywings - ok, call it a straightjacket if you must, but haven't you all heard of swaddling clothes? Like from Jesus in a manger type stories? Yep, swaddling clothes involve tightly wrapping a baby in fabric to restrict their arm movements. Why? Because their poor motor control / skills mean that their arms flail uncontrollably and unsettle the child. Having them wrapped up allows them to relax, and to rest. Yes, this practice has been around for thousands of years.
- That vehicle is parrot *operated*, not parrot powered.
- Binocular soccer was a one-off stunt for a Japanese gameshow, it's not a real thing.

VideoSift 5.0 Launch! (Sift Talk Post)

grinter says...

Great work! I'm still finding the changes a bit unsettling, but even good change is usually unsettling, isn't it?
My three criticisms are:
1) The 'top 15 unsifted but soon to expire' list on the side of all unsifted videos was a great way to bring attention to submissions that probably deserve it, before they disappear for ever into P-queue purgatory.
2) If someone went through the trouble of promoting a video in order to share it with the rest of us, it should have a reasonable tenure at the top of the front page. If promoted videos are taking up too much space, perhaps they can have even smaller thumbnails? Although, I think two rows of three videos would fit just fine with the current thumbnail size.
3) The lag I'm experiencing when typing and scrolling the page is maddening. Even typing this one comment has by body burning with frustration. That's not a feeling you want visitors associating with your site, because it will, consciously or subconsciously, train them to avoid VideoSift.

Step into an Optical Illusion

This summer I stayed at this motel (hotel?) in Santa Maria, which, legend has it, is haunted. I don't buy into that kind of thing at all, and had a good night's sleep with no disturbances, but I will say it was very spooky from the inside. Long hallways with *something* wrong about them. It took me a while to figure out, but in the end I concluded it was because the structure was a bit skewed here and there. Things you'd expect to be straight - walls, floors etc. were subtly off kilter, probably because it was an old building, and the effect really was quite unsettling, especially as it wasn't immediately obvious.

I remember seeing it on MTV back in the late 80s when there was a huge PF surge due to the release of the Division Bell (which I didn't particularly care for in the end). Something really really unsettling about this video. It just creems me out for some reason and really really matches the feeling the song always left me with... just pure ennui.

Free Market Solution to AIDS Research (Blog Entry by blankfist)

blankfist says...

>> ^JiggaJonson:

There are 34 different pharmaceutical companies in the United States currently. There are 34Not one of them pulls down less than 1.6 billion dollars a year. The average revenue of the bottom ten pharmaceutical companies is 2.4 billion. The top ten make at least 10 billion a year in revenue with Johnson and Johnson pulling down a whopping 70 billion in revenue.

My point exactly. They're making a killing because there's such little competition in the marketplace. 34 doesn't seem like a small number to you? There are more mechanics in your hometown most likely.

>> ^JiggaJonson:

Assuming your figure is correct, even the smallest of the pharmaceutical companies in the US would have access to producing something like the polio vaccine if the current cost to bring drug to market is in fact $802 million.

You're missing the point. Let's remember what this blog was about: what I'm assuming is more than 34 companies or schools have researched the AIDS protein for over three decade and they weren't able to do what the unlimited gamers online did in three weeks. That's opening the market. I know accepting that causes some unsettling cognitive dissonance, but there it is all pink and naked.

>> ^JiggaJonson:

I still don't understand why you think a smaller pharmaceutical company would shy away from production/distribution of a drug if it was all already paid for through a nonprofit like the March of Dimes.

Because instead of spending $800 million for one drug, they could spend $800 million for who knows how many drugs. Ten. Fifty. Maybe hundreds. Thousands? $800 million is a lot of money.

Especially when it's "cost of doing business" the large pharmaceutical companies probably wrote into the law when their lobbyists got the legislators to pass it. I'd much rather pay $800 million as a rich corporation so only the rich investors can compete with me. That ensures less competition. And the less competition, the higher the profits for an inferior product. As one of the 34 I'd prefer that to compete with hundreds of companies.

And private charities won't cover it all. You need investors. And if you're an investor with minimal capital who can't afford the risk of the $800 million price tag, you'll probably not invest. What do you have against competition? Don't you agree that more competition would be better? Isn't that what we've seen with the gamers?

You're correct, I should not have brought a discussion from another thread into your post. Sorry about that.

As far as removing it from my channel. I'm not sure a parody of a conspiracy actually qualifies as a conspiracy as described in my channel's description.

I don't mind being made fun of, or teased for my beliefs. My friends do it all the time. But being belittled and condescended because of them is another story. And that shit's getting out of hand here on the sift as of late. Everyone here seems to think they are the know all and be all of every subject on the face of the earth, and it's a tad bit unsettling to be honest. I find it amusing how vehemently people defend that there's nothing fishy about 9/11, when clearly there's a lot fishy about it.

IMO, Ponce is now engaging in a form of bullying on the sift, picking on Marbles repeatedly whenever the subject of a conspiracy comes up. He's acting like a Jr. High School punk because someone believes differently than he does. It's no different from picking on the "Fag" because he's not that same as you.

The Daily show while being comedy actually talks about factual events going on in the US and the rest of thew world even though it uses a comedic spin to do so it's still "news" IMO.

I'm fairly new around here and I need some enlightenment.

I don't care about the fight from another thread spilling over here, but doesn't the mere mention of the Illuminati invoke one of the biggest conspiracy theories of all time? I see your point about this being a parody of conspiracy people, but by that parody they are talking about the theory (I don't buy it BTW).

They're making fun of a real conspiracy theory. Should The Daily Show be included in the "news" channel? I say yes--but conspiracy is your channel, so it's your call.

Thanks

If you have something to say about @<a rel="nofollow" href="http://videosift.com/member/marbles" title="member since May 7th, 2011" class="profilelink">marbles, at least have the courtesy to do so in his presence. Calling him out in a thread where he has not yet uttered a word is unsporting.

He/she/it is just being a douche to the nth degree because he/she/it thinks there are no such things as conspiracies and that anyone who thinks there are is an idiot. Yes ponc we all know our government would NEVER lie to us, the American people, EVER, right? I'm so glad they found those WMD's in Iraq. Or else that would mean they lied to get us into an unnecessary war.

Sorry but this doesn't qualify for my channel, it's comedy not a conspiracy *nochannel *spacy *lies *comedy

Hot Sauce & Showers: Child Abuse? A court thinks so....

i am not going to judge another parent based on so little information but i will say this:
discipline should always be tempered with love and there should always be a lesson to be learned.
i found this mothers lack of empathy and decidedly cold demeanor a bit unsettling.
so while she wasnt physically beating her son,her cold execution of punishment left a bitter taste in my mouth.
children are not robots nor are they dogs.this woman seems to have confused her little boy with both and her style of punishment (in my opinion) will only garner her young boy in becoming a more cunning and creative liar.
he hasnt learned the morality that lying is bad and can harm not only him but his future relationships but he has learned that he may have to become a better liar to avoid punishment.

The 14th Amendment

DerHasisttot says...

Da wiki sez: Section 4 confirmed the legitimacy of all United States public debt appropriated by the Congress. It also confirmed that neither the United States nor any state would pay for the loss of slaves or debts that had been incurred by the Confederacy. For example, several English and French banks had lent money to the South during the war.[48] In Perry v. United States (1935), the Supreme Court ruled that under Section 4 voiding a United States government bond "went beyond the congressional power."[49] Legal analyst Jeffrey Rosen has argued that Section 4 gives the president unilateral authority to raise or ignore the national debt ceiling, and that if challenged the Supreme Court would likely rule in favor of expanded executive power or dismiss the case altogether for lack of standing.[50] Erwin Chemerinsky, professor and dean at University of California, Irvine School of Law, has argued that not even a "dire financial emergency" could the President raise the debt ceiling as "there is no reasonable way to interpret the Constitution that [allows him to do so]". [51] The issue of the 14th Amendement and the debt ceiling has been categorized as an unsettled question in the legal community.[52]

You can choose to say the 'magic words', but obviously your mind isn't convinced, so you still aren't saved by it.

@soulmonarch
I agree with the logic of thisbut I have to ask how you, as a Christian, don't find this remark kind of .. disturbing? It reminds me of one of the more grueling aspects of George Orwells "1984", namely how you're not only forced to comply, and forced to accept as unchangeable all the lies and distortions of "The Party", they are not happy with you lying, you have to actually believe it.. So for instance, in one scene Winston Smith is subjected to torture, and the interrogator shows him 3 fingers and asks how many it is, and then how many it is if the Party says its 5. The natural thing for Winston is to answer correctly "three", or to lie and say "five" to avoid torture. But his interrogator calmly explains to him that lying or playing stupid wont work. Eventually he gives up and says "I dont know!" "Better", says the interrogator.

If you genuinely think that I wont be "saved" unless I actually believe in something I really cant make myself believe, and I cant even lie and pretend to believe.. Don't you find that unsettling? What does that really tell you about Christianity?, about God?

In other news, it's completely legal for women to go topless here in Canada, but I'll be damned if I ever see it in action. Perhaps if this event were to take place in the summer... >> ^Aniatario:
I wouldn't want my sister sashaying around like that and I sure as hell wouldn't want her looking like that by herself, Downtown TO. That's just stupid.
Whats more, Its unsettling that you see so many little girls living up to this image, wearing clothes that're completely distasteful for their age.

An event with lots of topless ladies (and 'ladies') does take place here in the summer. It's called Pride.
