Scrap Metal Impales Windshield From Other side of Highway

jimnms says...

I had something similar happen, except the piece of metal came through the windshield and impaled itself in the center console. If I didn't swerve left when I saw it coming...

I never denied saying that. I'll say it again if you like.

"You common cry of curs, whose breath I hate
As reek o' th' rotten fens, whose loves I prize
As the dead carcasses of unburied men
That do corrupt my air, I banish you!"
-Shakespeare

"Swerve me? The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails, whereon my soul is grooved to run."
-Herman Melville

"That Edward shall be fearful of his life,
And then, to purge his fear, I'll be thy death.
King Henry and the prince his son are gone:
Clarence, thy turn is next, and then the rest,
Counting myself but bad till I be best."
Shakespeare

"All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick. He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart’s shell upon it."
-Herman Melville

I should probably thank @bobknight33 . Now I know why people cut the tongues out of some men.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Rolls Over In Small Overlap Crash Tests

wtfcaniuse says...

You might want to watch all those videos again.

Hitting a parked car at 60km/h and not rolling would be a clearly better outcome. The parked car is not a solid wall, it cannot bring you to a "dead stop".

Hitting a barrier and rolling is clearly worse than hitting the same barrier and sliding along it, "bouncing" off it, spinning etc even if you're clipped by another car. Again even with the sharp swerve into the barrier it would never have been a "dead stop"

Hitting the car in front which has suddenly braked would be far better than a high speed roll even if the car behind proceeds to rear end you. The closest to your "dead stop" scenario and still far better than a high speed roll.

I'm arguing with you because you often backup what you're saying with demonstrable facts, in this case you're not. You're ignoring variables, using differing experience to draw conclusions and dismissing the severity of something based on your controlled personal experience of it.

"Citation? Physics. acceleration = Δv/Δt. Larger injuries come from higher g forces."

Has nothing to do with studies in vehicular CSI. I asked for a citation relating to maximum force/time being a primary factor in vehicular CSI not a physics equation and a stunningly simplified opinion. Again this is the shit I'm arguing with you about.

Anatomy of a Viral Lie, COVID-19

newtboy says...

So sad you're that deluded. There are many he pleaded guilty to, both before and after being elected. Defrauding children and veterans with a fake charity he used to line his own pockets just to name one he admitted under oath and paid millions in fines for.
You really don't pay attention, do you? I have no lane, I swerve wildly across the freeway in an unpredictable zig zag pattern. Criminal cop exposure is hardly "my lane". Derp.

Stay in you lane and just keep posting bad cop videos.

Tailgater Climbs The Ladder Of Success

AeroMechanical says...

I see a lot of fail to go around in this video. Naturally, the biggest failure is on the part of the driver who failed to secure their cargo. that is grievous and inexcusable negligence (assuming it wasn't the result of freak equipment failure like a strap breaking).

I don't like all the cars swerving out of their lane to avoid the ladder. Can't really say for certain from the video how aware they were of surrounding traffic and distances involved, but that is usually the wrong response. Better to come to a complete stop in your lane if you have to. I'm pretty sure the tailgater wasn't aware of that pickup coming up on his left.

And of course the guy not leaving enough space when he had plenty of alternatives available. That guy and his like-minded buddies are the primary reason 40% of my commutes over the last two weeks have been an hour and a half instead of the 20 minutes they should be.

I think it must be the heat or something, but way too many people have been driving foolishly or like they're defending their position lately.

At least two second intervals. Let other drivers merge. Use the accelerator on the on ramp--you should be going the speed limit by the time you have to merge with traffic. We'd all get home quicker that way.

Ah, that's better. Thank you Videosift for the therapy session.

Chinese Bus Crashes Off Bridge

ForgedReality says...

Look at the driver video. He DELIBERATELY cranks the wheel to the left. She had already stopped her assault for a moment. He was not distracted at the time, there was nothing in front to avoid.

He was going straight, and then she goes out of view and he suddenly swerves left ON PURPOSE.

You can see from the other dashcam, that there are no vehicles ahead of the bus that he was trying to avoid.

I think he was trying to get her to fall down and stop attacking him when the bus hit the barrier. I don't think he was expecting to go over the side. He was hoping the bus would just crash and she would maybe be ejected through the windshield, but he 100% purposely crashed the vehicle.

When Juggling Knives Goes Wrong!

ForgedReality says...

I can't figure out what caused the cyclist to fall over. Was he intentionally swerving to trip that running lady? I have watched that bit over and over and I just can't get it to make any sense...

NY Police Ram Cyclist And Make Up Charges

AeroMechanical says...

That seems to be the police maneuver with bicycles. They've done that to me before: they come up along side you and then swerve to cut you off so unless you are on your toes you will collide with them. Heaven forbid they should just flash their lights and tell you to stop when they can just assume everyone is a deadly dangerous criminal. I blame Daryl Gates.

Spinout Close Call At Kaitoke Intersection

robbersdog49 says...

I would take that route out every time.

Turning to the right would require not only a larger change in direction from me, but also the risk of hitting oncoming traffic rather than a very slow moving/stationary vehicle or running off onto grass.

As for the over correction, that's someone driving in a very stressful situation and doing their best. Just about every car you can buy in the UK now has stability control that would have prevented that spin, and the amount of training it would take for someone to be able to reliably control a car without that stability control through a stressful and unexpected situation like that would be overly prohibitive.

The larger swerve required to go to the right of the car cutting in across the lane would have made the car a lot more unstable and a lot more likely to turn over.

Bad call to go to the right. She made the right choice, and less dangerous one and everyone walked away.

Buddy turns INTO the path of the oncoming car, then over-corrects into a spin-out. Terrific work.

When road rage goes terribly wrong

dannym3141 says...

Lot of people in various places around the internet saying the driver definitely swerved into the bike on purpose, which i'm not gonna rule out. But i've known enough very timid/nervous drivers who have reacted bizarrely under pressure to not rule that out either.

Cyclist Uses Aerodynamics Over Leg Strength

newtboy says...

When I rode 30+ miles a day, almost 30 years ago, I used to do something similar on downhills. I wouldn't take the toe clips off, but I would hang my ass over the rear wheel with the seat in my gut. This flattened my body and made me more aerodynamic (but not nearly as much as he is) and put my weight farther back and lower, meaning I could brake much harder without going over the front. His center of gravity probably goes higher in this position with his legs that high. Since my feet never left the pedals, I could still pedal if needed and get back upright in an instant.

I never raced, so I don't know if this would have been against any specific rules, but taking your feet off the pedals that way would make you far less stable, imagine if he had to brake or swerve, and reattaching at speed is no walk in the park either, so it's probably considered a likely hazard to others and banned...but that is just a guess.

Fairbs said:

do you know the rationale with banning? Potential danger to other riders? It's interesting to me that it would be banned. Kind of like the first guy that went over backwards on the high jump, it seems like a legit innovation.

Dog on top of cage being towed sparks outrage

Payback says...

That trailer is too heavy for that SUV. If they had to swerve to hit a deer in traffic or something, that entire rig could roll over. The dogs in the cage might survive but that one wouldn't.

I also sincerely believe the dog on top hates riding at all, and probably gets into fights with the other dogs, so he's up there for convenience.

The Sinister Reason Weed is Illegal

shagen454 says...

I hear that, I know that I've had to drive home stoned, real stoned. Didn't want to but had to. I know for a fact that I was super dangerous. Even after I ate my Wendy's hamburger & friends on someone's driveway (because I was so paranoid). I remember it started to rain - drove right through a flooded creek on the road at 50mph and definitely felt like I was swerving (even if I may not have been). Nevertheless, I know I can't handle driving while stoned and never have ever again (don't smoke pot much, anyway).

I also feel that pot changed some of my perceptions permanently for the better. This idea scares the living shit out of normie corporate people because any change to their mind is looked upon as bad, but they have no idea to begin with, they're ignorant to the facts or the experiences (look at me being judgmental haha). Many medicinal "drug" plants can really do people a lot of good in the short & long-term (I'm looking at you psilocybe & ayahuasca).

One thing they didn't mention that I'm really not convinced about is how impairing weed is, for how long, and how much it contributes to auto accidents. In recent years there's been a big spike in the proportion of drivers involved in fatal accidents who tested positive for marijuana :

https://www.merryjane.com/news/weed-related-car-accidents-increase-raising-more-questions-about-legal-limit

Of course that doesn't mean it caused the accidents, if people are just smoking twice as much nowadays, even a random sample would show a big increase. But it seems like the research on this is lacking. Does anyone know of any government that has science based guidelines for a sensible blood-pot content limit?

The Enforcer

newtboy says...

Had anyone wrecked, he certainly would be liable, and the video would be perfect evidence that it 1)wasn't an accident and 2)called for massive punitive damages.
If he really thought it was his place to stop them (and it's not), why didn't he just drive 1/2 in each lane instead of trying to cause an accident?

I kept hoping someone would merge into his lane, blocking him from swerving back.
He would not try this in front of me. That's the benefit of driving a lifted 46 year old Bronco with a home made brush guard/bumper and rust holes in every panel, no one assumes I won't just crash into them....it clearly wouldn't hurt my car's value. ;-)

Road rage and getting assaulted.

newtboy says...

Except that it's not shenanigans to lane split to the front at a light when on a bike, it's expected and legal, but it is shenanigans to jump back in front as a car just because you're butt hurt someone got in front of you, then swerve at the bike as if to kill him....and also serious shenanigans to chase him like you're Steve Macqueen because he turned your mirror slightly.
Perhaps you mean it's shenanigans to hit the douchebags mirror? I guess I can't say that's totally incorrect, and clearly didn't turn out well, but when someone tries to kill you (which is what happened as I see it), that's a fairly restrained response.
Florida is a concealed carry state, and a 'stand your ground' state as well. The biker could have shot that guy in my eyes after the first attempt to hit him at the very start, certainly when he cut him off and got out of the car, and justifiably, properly, and morally when the car started really trying to run him off the road.
(ps, I don't ride motorcycles)

Bit of shenanigans on both sides. Bike guy cut off car guy to go first at light, car guy upped the ante, bike guy slapped car guy's mirror. Then we get a lovely chase that endangered their lives and the lives of everyone else on the road.
