EEVBlog - Hobbyist Arrested For Bringing Homemade Clock

newtboy says...

After hearing more of the story, it is seeming more and more like this probably was a fishing expedition for 'racial and/or religious injustice'.
He was, reportedly, repeatedly asked by numerous teachers to put his clock away, as it would make some people nervous (and already had), instead he continued to take it to class after class until one teacher (in an English class, his 4th class?) insisted on an explanation about what he was showing around the class, and he steadfastly refused to give any at all.
He could not have intentionally made himself any more suspicious without putting a ski mask on, IMO. I hope all these offers dry up if it becomes more clear this was all intentional on the student's (parent's?) part. I sure don't want to see that kind of baiting behavior rewarded.

EDIT: As a side note, any clock with an alarm could actually be a bomb...or at least a trigger. My brother was suspended in the 80's for an altoids tin with a battery, mercury switch, and buzzer. When you picked it up it buzzed, and inside was a note saying "boom, this was a bomb, you just died"....he played 'gottcha' at the time (kind of a spy vs spy game played at schools back then, where you had an assignation target and someone else targeted you) and that was his best way of 'killing' his opponents. It was also proper to suspend him for bringing that totally safe device to school then, IMO.

Why are there dangerous ingredients in vaccines?

ChaosEngine says...

False dichotomy. There are without doubt exceptionally ethically dubious practices within the pharmaceutical industry (look up "patent evergreening" for a start).

However that doesn't mean their products don't work.

Oil companies are working hard to protect their profits by actively lying about climate change, but no-one claims that cars could run on a "natural alternative".

Google, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft are all spying on us to one degree or another, but we can still search the web, post stupid photos and ignore each other with our phones.

TL;DR big pharma are dicks, but at least they use science.

The Fifth Estate: The Silence of the Labs

Bruti79 says...

Yeah, he's been doing this for a while. If you have a majority government, you can pretty much do anything you want. Similar to how a super majority works in the US, except there's not a lot you can do to delay or stop it.

He just passed two new bills C-51 and C-24 which are "anti terror" bills. 51 pretty much gives the gov't the ability to spy on citizens and gives our intelligence service the powers of the police. They can arrest anyone, and not have a whole lot of evidence or reason to. The other, C-24, has created a two tier citizenship. First class citizens can never have your citizenship stripped, while second class citizens can.

What makes you a second class citizen? Not being born in Canada, being a dual citizen anywhere, or being eligible for being a dual citizen anywhere makes it so you can have your citizenship taken away. For example, my mom was born in Denmark, I am still eligible for citizenship there, ergo, I am now a second class citizen. =)

It's pretty fucked, most conservatives are opposing both bills along with the rest of the damn country. =\

U.S. spy plane records China's artificial islands

Payback says...

It's a "surveillance plane" which means spying. Spying doesn't need to be stealthy, it just has to be effective. The Russians knew the U2 and SR-71 were there, they just couldn't do anything about it.

lucky760 said:

Where exactly are those islands located?

Is that a spy plane? The engine looks like it's on a jumbo jet. (Not to mention they aren't doing a good job of spying if everyone is seeing and communicating with them.)

lucky760 says...

I guess I was really questioning the title of the post, which calls it a US spy plane.

I'd like to see on a map where these islands are. How far out are the Chinese trying to go? I wouldn't think they could create actual artificial islands far away from land because they wouldn't be anchored to anything (except maybe with a rope).

Drachen_Jager said:

They're not there to spy. Satellites can do that just better.

As far as I can tell, It's a bit of a chest thumping exercise. China apparently wants to expand their "official" air and sea space into international space through the addition of these islands. The US sends these planes in to test the Chinese reaction and show they won't be intimidated and maybe force China into officially claiming the new space so they can be challenged in an international court.
