Fox: Faith Healing vs. Medicine

ledpup says...

>> ^Nithern:

Nithern, is your argument that "the faithful ill should go to doctors because some doctors are Christian?" Do you really want to run with that one?

And science is cold? Huh?!

Hope is an utterly useless concept. I could be falling from a 100 metre building and hopeful of a speedy recovery or some of god's attention for a moment. Or I could be falling from a 100 metre building and be in despair of my soon to be mangled dead body. Either emotion is pretty much useless. I'm almost certainly going to die. Yet, people have survived such falls. Sure, you can stick with your hope and maybe god will deliver you from almost certain death, but I sure as hell wouldn't mind some jet-powered rocket pants to Junior Birdman the hell out of here!

There are situations where believing you are going to die actually has a very bad impact on your condition. Scientists (and others) are well aware of this. A really interesting off-shoot of this is the nocebo response. You might find it interesting.

Senator imitates Ricky Ricardo in front of Sotomayor.

thepinky says...

Let's examine just how racist this is. The Senator made a pop culture reference to a very well known, heavily accented Cuban TV character while addressing a Puerto Rican woman. First of all, Desi Arnaz was awesome. My question is, are references to Ricky Ricardo inherently racist in nature? I've never heard them used that way, but I could be wrong and I'm ready to be corrected. I don't think that Ricardo was an ugly racial stereotype (I've only seen bits of the show, so I could be mistaken). He had an accent, but there is nothing wrong with that.

I would be worried if Coburn had quoted Speedy Gonzales or Tony Montana or Cheech or something.

Think about it. Is Coburn making any kind of derogatory statement about hispanic people in any way? I mean, really, it may have been kind of inappropriate to make a joke that called attention to her nationality and possibly drew a comparison between Sotomayor and Ricardo (if he even intended it that way), but just how racist was it? Not very. It makes you cringe a little bit inside, but is it really even derogatory?

I would venture to say that this really isn't a big deal and that the reaction is a classic example of our hypersensitivity to racial references of any kind.

I am willing to accept that I may be wrong about this, so if anyone wants to explain to me how this is racist, I'm all ears.

Mayor Wants You to Turn in Your Neighbor for $1000

Notice he said "illegal guns"
Why don't you go live in the projects surrounded by violent criminals, and then I want to hear your views on the 2nd Amendment.
Bravo Mayor Booker.

Ignorance. How can a right be illegal? Maybe your free speech should be illegal? Or your right to a speedy trial? Freedom from cruel and unusual punishment? You seem to want to pick and choose other people's rights based on your fear of them, namely those in the projects which is probably racially motivated.

Government has no constitutional right to take away, grant or give permission to your rights. You lose, sir. Good day, sir.

The Dagfather gets his Silver Diamond, suspects Barzini (80s Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

Dag is a prime example of the concept "first among equals", thanks to his visionary idea of the best user-moderated admin system on the web on this the best website in the universe. That vision has suffered some blows, which has triggered the disillusioned dictator we have today, but he seems to be on a speedy recovery on his way towards VS4.

Congratulations, and know that we not only appreciate what we have been served so far, but support you in making it ever better.

Lovable Ventura is a "truther" and apparently still suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome. We here at Reality all wish him a speedy recovery.

Obama the Communist should take receipt of his quadrupling the deficit and all the new taxes that will further destroy capitalism, the free market and freedom.

Fjnbk says...

I haven't noticed too many other issues, other than a possible decrease in traffic. But that should pick up again after some time.

This recovery was very smooth and speedy. Thank you, admins, for your hard work.

^NetRunner,
I'm going to defend the rights of humans you would wantonly trample on.

Rights like:

1) The right to a fair a speedy trial.
2) The right to an attorney.
3) The right to know charges against you if you're being detained.
4) The right to privacy.
5) The right to choose.

*sigh*

I don't understand how you neocons can pick and choose from the bill of rights, only selecting the ones that meet your worldview. All the amendments are important.
