Stephen Colbert on Trump's North Dakota Speech

newtboy says...

So this was just for Trump? ;-)

Bob, in your world, do children raise their parents?
I have to ask, because you see the world 100% reversed from how most rational people do.
Trump has failed at everything he's tried to do besides install one judge, a "win" handed to him by the 2016 congress blatantly stealing a nomination from the last president, not one he had a thing to do with. I defy you to make a list of 10 actual accomplishments (not just managing the basics) Trump is responsible for since taking office...creating a cabinet (then firing and replacing them) doesn't count, managing to keep minimally short term funding the government doesn't count, not yet being indicted doesn't count, neither does a good golf score. I think it would be easy to give a list of 10 legislative accomplishments by Obama in his first 8 months in office, like them or not.
Perhaps you need to define "way better", because every metric I can apply says he's done way worse, no matter what your politics.

Then you go on to say you aren't a Trump fan (a clear, obvious, provable lie) and that you actually support Cruz, the only politician more despised than Trump, a guy who votes against disaster aid for Americans unless they voted for him.

Just wow, Bob, and I thought you couldn't sink lower. You showed me.

Hate to tell you, but Kid Rock 2020 is actually more likely....and that's terrifying.

Comedy for the intellectually weak .

Trump is doing way better than Obama and is a far better leader than Clinton.

Hate to warn you all Trump 2020

I'm not a Trump fan I am a Cruz fan .

Victim Gets Revenge On Bully By Dating His Mom

noims says...

We all get the duality of this. I had a bad feeling, but then an even worse feeling kicked in... I should do a cost-benefit analysis. I already hate myself for sinking into management-speak. But...

Guy on phone: only obvious benefit is lording this over his bully. It feels really good, especially when broadcast. Maybe some residual guilt. Got to take into account that, whatever his original intention, his reaction was from the gut.

Bully: unknown. Depends on what kind of person he is now, years after. Probably angry. Possibly feels bad about what just happened to his mother.

Mother: no benefit. Probably feels raped. Possibly was raped, depending on your definition. Possible shame over what her son did. Comment of "you probably deserved it" could be genuine, or could be severe defensiveness.

Radio station:
OK, I can't be objective here. It's possibly mostly live, they maybe feel an obligation to entertain, they have little control, but fuck those guys. I just hope they apologised afterwards.

Personal analysis: doing the deed isn't cool, given the innocent victim. Laughing about it on the air is understandable, but fucked up. Broadcasting it, laughing, and celebrating the outcome - whoever you are - is disgusting.

"Trump has no desire and no capacity to lead the world'

Briguy1960 says...

Soooo let me get this straight even though I am by no means a fan of Trump but have watched with shock the depths to where the Clinton Obama media will sink to attack him.....just what good would a statement on the obvious North Korean problem do?
Put pressure on China and North Korea as Trump is already saying and doing?
Does this guy ever actually "listen" to Trump or does he just tow the line and ignore everything Trump has said that is correct and only worry about Trumps tweets like the rest of the media?
A statement would be nothing but grandstanding and utterly useless in accomplishing anything.
I guess when you are a reporter you think words are the ultimate
power but sometimes they are only spouting off at the mouth.

Water Slide like a Boss

Actually, he's keeping his legs in a "boat" shape. While I'm not 100% saying it's real, normally people get to the end and "spread out" and sink. The physics are definitely probable.

So Much CO2 That Trees Can't Save Us

greatgooglymoogly says...

It likely is too late, as soon as these short-lived but potent gases are released it will get unpleasant very quickly. I know dumping iron in the ocean to stimulate algae growth which then sinks as acts as a carbon sink has been discussed. Also, spraying aerosols into the upper atmosphere constantly can decrease warming, but that doesn't reduce the CO2.

So Much CO2 That Trees Can't Save Us

newtboy says...

Granted, the earth will be fine....but people and other higher life forms probably won't.
Population thinning will come too late, because these effects of overpopulation will last far longer than one generation....unless you mean it will thin out to zero and self correct, which is likely.

What you don't seem to get is that when the ocean acidifies enough, the dead sea life sinks and bacteria causes massive levels of hydrogen sulfide which can then come out of solution and cover land in toxic gas clouds, leading to another "slime world" of slimes and bacteria like happened after the end-Permian extinction.
I wouldn't characterize that as "all is well" myself.

Jimmy Kimmel tells story of his newborn's health issues

oblio70 says...

...there is a small, ignorant, selfish part of me loudly screaming "FINALLY!" over the easy emotions of this. As a father to a CHD child, I am intimately aware of the extreme complications (outside of the medical ones) such a development presents to a family...maybe let that sink in a bit.

So why do I hold such a callous response? Please believe that my heart is breaking for them even now, but the chance of seeing an opportunity to bring this issue bubble up to the front and ...
First, why is this even an issue beyond the Hospital to begin with, and what roles do those outside play in the outcomes? For me, this experience in my own life has been so devastating and yet I am unable to express what it was that happened and how I processed it, while wildly pointing and saying "like that".

I'm sorry...still processing it I guess.

Your Brain on LSD and Acid

shagen454 says...

Yeah, it's been a while for me too. The best one I remember was living off Valencia street in the Mission district of San Francisco. I dropped, went to sleep for a hour and woke up and the floors literally had mist flowing through the apartment like some sort of ethereal fantasy movie. When I went outside the fence was waving/bending in a mesmerizing way and the houses were continually sinking into the ground. I looked at some flowers and they were infinitely growing. The best part was looking in the mirror, it was like one of those youtube videos where someone takes a photo of them-self every day for a year - every second it was like a different photo of myself except very organic watching myself grow old, bald and with a beard and then back to normal, lol. It was fun, but I'd never do it again without some anti-anxiety pills around for the last 6 hours which I found to be fairly annoying. Plus, as Shpongle puts it "LSD? Do DMT." Bill Maher - Elizabeth Warren Interview

ChaosEngine says...

The thing is it clearly DID bother her and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Rather than saying that was "was softball compared to what she'd face if she runs in 2020", we should expect a higher level of political discourse.

Trump can't be allowed to become the norm, and sinking to his level (even if only to mock him) just further entrenches that behaviour.

Otherwise, we really WILL end up with idiocracy.

MilkmanDan said:

Maher arguably gave her a chance to own it and show that it didn't bother her, but she didn't take it.

My take is that Warren was expecting softball. Maher got a bit impatient with her going full tilt with politician-speak and threw a changeup. By the end of the interview he seems to regret having prodded her a bit. But the thing is, that interview was softball compared to what she'd face if she runs in 2020. Then, interviewers won't throw changeups, it'll be chin-music fastballs instead.

Syria's war: Who is fighting and why [Updated]

enoch says...

@MilkmanDan

i do not want to speak for eric,so i will just explain why i downvoted.

this video attempts to explain the syrian crisis, with almost zero critical examination.the video practically regurgitates the current american political narrative and never mentions the conflicts of information.

let me explain:

1.the video states this all started due to the arab spring, but totally fails to mention that the MAIN reason for the continued conflict is not arab spring, but the fact the both qatar and saudi arabia have been pushing syria to allow them to build a pipeline through syria in order for those countries to sell oil and gas to europe.

which would be in direct competition with russia, which is the main provider of oil and gas to europe.

2.this video claims..twice..that assad has used chemical weapons against his own people.while convenient for a western power which may,or may not, wish to engage militarily.there was no evidence in 2013,and there is no evidence this time (mainly due to time.i mean come on,TWO days? and BOOM.assad did it,nothing to see here.move along).

the only journalist in 2013 that challenged the narrative was seymor hersh.who was ridiculed and chastised, and ultimately vindicated in 2014 by the UN securities commission, that assad was not the perpetrator, but rather the al qeada off shoot el nosra.

which was barely covered,if at all,in american corporate media.

it is also important to mention that the assad regime,in full compliance with the UN,handed over all materials that could be used in chemical warfare.i.e:sarin gas.

3.while the video DOES mention it,it does so in a very slick way,and if you are not following this situation, you will miss it.

america IS supporting and funding "rebels",but pay attention to who those rebels are:they are the offshoot of al qeada,el nosra.

so in effect, america sis funding and supporting al qeada to fight against the assad regime.

i will give you time to allow that to sink in a moment.

these are only a few of the glaring inconsistencies in this video, but i will agree that the situation in syria is complicated, but the reasons for that complication are not being mentioned in this video..at all.

and one final thing to chew about before i go,because i think it is an important aspect to ponder, and as of right now, thats all it really is:speculation.

assad was set to meet with a UN peace council in a week to discuss possible diplomatic solutions.add to this that trump had just recently (last week) backed off obama's "red line" approach, and stated quite clearly that america is ONLY interested in dealing with ISIS,and had NO interest in dealing with assad.

question:

why would assad, with only a week to go before peace negotiations, commit politicial suicide by gassing his own people?

who benefits from this attack?

because it sure is not assad.

we all know the situation in syria is dire, complicated and grotesque, but the current narrative being fed to americans simply does NOT add up.

2+2 does not = 5

and this video does nothing to clear that up,it simply regurgitates american corporate media's narrative.

and i refuse to upvote that.

Epic Anti-texting rant

yellowc says...

Same tactic cops and other educational media tries, doesn't really seem to work I'm afraid. It's the old, "yeah but that driver is stupid, I'm too awesome to ever do that" mentality.

I don't think this is ever getting solved until self driving cars take over, I just don't see any attempt at stopping sinking in really. Luckily more optimistic people are in charge though, keep up the good fight.

A Closer Look - Media Fawns Over Trump's New Tone

bigbikeman says...

The only thing about this that grabbed me....
there is an actual theory floating around out there that Donald Trump can't read (google it).

WHY DID HE HAVE AN OBVIOUS STAGED PHOTO OP TO SHOW HIM "READING"?

Seriously. Maybe he can, maybe he can't. That's besides the point:
The POTUS is actually staging photo ops to dispel internet theories.

Let that shit sink in.

I don't care what else you might say about Donald Trump, but he is a very, very, small person. He may be the smallest person. You have no idea.

I will follow you, Namor! First, let me use my Quantum Bands to wreak havoc and sink the entire west coast of the United States into the Pacific. And with the help of the Fantastic Four and the more agreeable Deviants, shield the land mass from all harm and construct that utopia: Atlantis 5.

Yeah, the other Atlantises were blown up and or phased out of time and space, but i have high hopes for A5. Better than liberal hubs named after Mesopotamian cities! Death to the Night Watch and beware gov't telepaths...

I understand what you are saying I would say though that in the past, a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away- media in this country was a bit more "journalistic". Able to take multiple views and be the devil's advocate, if need be. Now everything is streamlined and slimmed down with an agenda set by their corporate sponsors and shareholders. It wasn't ALWAYS like this in the very specific way that it is now.

I think I abstracted my point, sure - Trump would be great for capitalism and business and I do understand why many asshats think "in the box" for that sort of utopian status quo bullshit. Unfortunately, we're no longer in the 50's & 60's... we have MANY issues that demand progressive answers.

Welp, my friends - soon we might just have to join a Snorkel Colony. Thanks Trump, alt-right-wingers & capitalism! I always wanted to go back to my roots in the ocean! Death to the Night Watch and beware gov't telepaths.
