Solar FREAKIN' Roadways!

Stormsinger says...

Asphalt may be petroleum based, but it's also one of the most recycled products ever...around 99% of all asphalt is recycled. The increasing cost of petroleum will take decades to make this a cheaper alternative.

It does -nothing- for electric vehicles, or for snowplowing. Those claims are nothing but the purest bullshit. The amount of electricity needed to melt more than a trace of snow is utterly prohibitive. Which is why you don't see heated roads...or any of the others that this video "addresses" (without providing any actual facts, of course).

VoodooV said:

you're not wrong that rooftop solar panels would collect more energy. but this also kills many birds with one idea/stone. since asphalt is petroleum-based, the costs for roads is constantly going up, this solves that. this solves a lot of issues with electric vehicles, and snow plowing and many others that the video addresses.

but hey, even if this idea ultimately doesn't work out. any work done on this project can be spun off into a new project that could benefit us greatly.

so I've got zero problem investing in this, even if it ultimately it doesn't pan out, because this work will ultimately benefit someone else's work.

Water Wheel Power - Cleaning Up One River At A Time

nock says...

Nice idea, but it would be better if they sorted it before they just send it to the dump. Not sure you need to send logs/branches and recyclable materials to the landfill. It certainly moves slowly enough to sort.

Power Japan Plus - Dual Carbon Battery

aaronfr says...

Tell an engineer that you want a battery that’s powerful, safe, reliable, and cheap, and he’ll probably respond, “Powerful, safe, reliable, cheap: pick any two.”

It's "dual carbon" because both anode and diode are carbon. It is still a lithium ion battery, but it is much cheaper because most lithium ion batteries today use rare earth metals that are hard to mine, very expensive and difficult to recycle/dispose of.

So this battery might be cheaper and safer, but jury's still out on powerful and reliable.

newtboy said:

But didn't the video say the 'electrolyte' was still made of lithium ions? Maybe I missed something?
I want it to be a real, cheap, stable, eco-friendly, powerful battery, but I have to wait to see it for sale and in action first.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Climate Change Debate

RedSky says...

I share some of your cynicism in terms of politicians and their incentives but climate change, whether you acknowledge it as a serious issue or not, is something that can only be addressed on an inter-governmental level.

I've said this before in a different video thread but individually minimising your carbon emissions is quite literally an exercise in self masturbatory indulgence. The vast majority of emissions are the result of industrial by-products in the product cycle. The same applies to regular pollution (and whether you use the recycling bin or not) and water wastage among other issues.

Actively selecting environmentally friendly products is generally either impossible (where alternatives don't exist) or impractical (where you're simply not provided sufficient or accurate information to effectively do so).

The efficient and effective way to reduce emissions is through a climate trading scheme. Emissions reduction occurs where it is cheapest to do and those for whom it is expensive buy the permits from those who can offset cheapest. Broad international adoption is the only way that this gets implemented because the costs are borne by everyone. In progress towards that goal, Republican opposition and the broad corporate campaign in the US against what is a scientific consensus is the primarily roadblock here.

The level of belief in climate change being caused by human activity and of being perceived as a threat in the US is woeful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_opinion_by_country

The EU is on board. Japan is on board. Among the largest economies, the US is the laggard and perhaps China. With the US being a major funder and significant influence on international agencies, they are clearly the roadblock here. With just EU, Japan, and the US, there would be consensus in >50% of global GDP output, which should be decisive.

You should acknowledge that, if you are wrong, while you may think you're hedging your bets by being environmentally responsible as you claim, in sum you're doing more harm than good through spreading FUD.

Anyone in favor of the state is in favor of this because the state has and always will serve those with the money. And politicians will always look out for their best interests and those of their cronies.

All government "intervention" that you so strongly support means intervention on behalf of politicians and their cronies. It would not get done otherwise.

But again, good luck with all that. Your arguing with me about it hasn't and won't change anything an iota.

And, for your information/education: These: "And no, that doesn't require overthrowing the government and going to an all berries diet. Nor me writing a book about my efforts." are ALL straw man "arguments." I didn't say anything about overthrowing the government (which is not equated with anarchy). I didn't tell you to go on a berries diet to help the environment. Nor did I say that you needed to write a book in order to save the planet or whatever.

DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION Gameplay Trailer - The Inquisitor

Jinx says...

Cool looking environments. I hope I don't find them recycled 20 times...

It seems pretty clear it won't be another DA:O, but I enjoyed all the Mass Effects even though they were clearly aimed at consoles. Seems that the only RPGs that get made exclusively for PC now are the MMO kind, which is a shame.

I'm trying to keep my expectations sufficiently low so that when it comes out I am pleasantly surprised.

YESSsss! Way to rock that down-vote, CE-
(...always thought the ratio of ups to down-votes should be close to equal here....folks, y'all really need to lose that whole, "But nobody will liiike me!" shit, right?? it's...it's...pussified.

The moral here is, Don't litter, please recycle, and don't be a pussy...OH, and don't drive one of those energy-efficient tin-coffin's posing as a car, cause you look like a gimp goin' down the street bein' in the only one on the road surrounded by ginormous ones, and that shits' just plain dangerous.

How To Make A pancake Out Of A Land Cruiser

coolhund says...

Yes, I am fairly sure they dont do burnouts with them either........

You mean they always reuse them? Even if they are already damaged?
Every material has its limits and cant be recycled until time ends. Maybe it was time to get completely new ones. You dont know that. But I do know that people who use expensive equipment like that, very rarely treat it like that unless they are allowed to or have a reason.
I mean they surely knew that that wreck would be seen by their superiors and a lot of people were involved.

charliem said:

Fiarly sure they dont do any kind of burnouts on these, they are 100% recycled and refurbished, cause they cost an absolute fortune!

Potentially damaging the core of the tyre by doing stupid shit like this....is stupid.

How To Beat Flappy Bird (Best Method)

Chairman_woo says...

1. So you are suggesting people who live on 40p a day would give two squirty shits about a smartphone? That is a result of global economic issues of which one person smashing a phone (they presumably own) is negligible to the point of complete irrelevance. Non sequitur, if this is really a concern to you then you need to go after the corruptions and inequalities in our very financial system. Handing down a phone (which is likely near the end of its useful life anyway) is not going to change anything of significance here.

2. I'm suggesting you are making an entirely subjective value judgement about the pleasure and practical use one could derive from the same investment of money/material. Lets not forget he generated around $7000 of personal income from a £50-100 investment. But more than that, perhaps to some people the pleasure and entertainment of smashing that phone was comparable to other activities that might cost the same (e.g. a night of drinking or a weekend away could easily exceed the cost of that handset). Are you suggesting spending £50-100 on leisure activities etc. is morally reprehensible? Let's not forget "smartphones" don't do anything essential for most people, they are luxury items. If you have a problem with 1st world culture that's absolutely fine (laudible even) but you can't be singling out this guy for making a very successful comedy skit when there are people everywhere who's lifestyles could be politely described as "a decadent waste of atoms".

3. Absolutely nothing is stopping that smashed phone from being recycled, many shops would give you a £50-100 trade in on a new handset even in that state as they are typically just melted down anyway (and your new shiny phone contract is worth more to them than caring about the state of your bag of broken phone bits).

Besides as a matter of pedantry my point clearly stands, doing NOTHING in a drawer is clearly inferior to generating $7000, and providing 2mins of hillarity!?!?!?!? (the comparison was between hammer and drawer not drawer and charity) What you did there was called a "straw man" (i.e. twist my word's to make a different argument that helps make your own point)

4. The phone is old and they are not built to last (again feel free to rant on our disposable culture but leave this guy out of it) as @Payback pointed out it's probably knackered anyway.

Somewhere in your argument is some righteous and commendable rage about the inequalities of the global market but you're focusing it in the wrong direction here. Be angry at the CEO and shareholders of Samsung who profit from human death and suffering in the Coltan mines, the Corrupt banks that hold a fake debt over the poor populations of the world or the Complicit governments that support them. Or maybe go after the Ideologues and philosophers that conceived and spread the culture of consumer and corporate greed driven economics.

Basically anything but rage at this guy for making a IMHO pretty funny video on a budget that utterly pales into insignificance compared to just about anything else.

Could he have handed it down? Sure. Could he have traded it for a crate of jack Daniels, a half ounce of weed, an animatronic chicken alarm clock, a present for his wife etc. etc. etc.?

Your argument taken to its logical conclusion would condemn anyone that spends money or resources on anything other than practical necessities or charity. I'm not saying that's what you meant, but that's what your argument as stated invites.

A10anis said:

1; £50-£100 may not be much to you, but there are countries where the population exist on around 40 pence a day, I'm sure they would consider it a lot of money.

2; You saying; " smashing it with a hammer is no different to most of the mindless procrastination they get used for anyway," is rather silly. A Non-sequitur.

3; It doesn't beat "languishing in a drawer." Money - albeit a small amount- can be made from old phones or, if you care, given to someone who can't afford one. That, incidentally, is the major point I was trying -unsuccessfully it seems - to make.

Better Mousetrap? No, Better Cardboard Box!

dannym3141 says...

I once worked at goods in/out at a bookstore and boxes are a big thing as you can imagine.

Even if i fork out the money for a cast, i'm not going to fork out for a whole range of differently sized casts just so i can pack things larger or smaller than a small cube. How many casts am i supposed to own and do they fit inside each other like matryoshka dolls?

We kept any decent boxes that arrived in order to re-use them sending things back out again, and the rest we recycled. The best thing about a box is that it doesn't need pristine crisp corners and edges to be reusable, i feel like this contraption will make boxes less recyclable overall.

Better Mousetrap? No, Better Cardboard Box!

VoodooV says...

aren't we already at diminishing returns when it comes to paper-based things?

we can already recycle paper/cardboard pretty well right?. Just the fact that we're using paper instead of some sort of plastic is better on the environment.

then you gotta expend more resources building those templates that made the packing look so easy. so all that "saved" resources is now going to make box templates.

just seems like their efforts would be better spent on other fields. Obviously we need better recycling technology, but don't we have the paper recycling situation pretty much dealt with other than just getting more consumers to recycle their papers/cardboard

Cops using unexpected level of force to arrest girl

chingalera says...

Not my concern, though it saddens me that your big brain begins to hurt when you hear some truth-You mistake a condescending tone or holier-than-thou attitude for my having brought you a glimpse of the non-linearity I am both caught in the center of in real-time, and see increasing exponentially for the entire world.

While it's fun to imagine some fantasy land where everyone recycles, wars are gone, Jews and gentiles and Muslims all joining hands and playing X-Box One, it's heading in another direction.

You don't really have to decipher my dialog, I'm of average intelligence, and I'm not calling people sheeple, just observing the obvious based on years of work on self-awareness and the nature of mankind. We're predictable. Just like I predicted when taking-on this style of diatribe and discourse, picking one of many video depicting police action in the world today. I did this with purpose, to draw-out those of you who haven't figured it out yet that radical change is afoot.

Predictable also, is that something so incredibly horrifying as police and government in every single aspect of a modern human's life, could sound so utterly fantastic to someone who apparently resorts to "destroying the messenger" because the message is so abhorrent and unthinkable.
Sheppard did it, jump fight in and make my case for me.

World War Two Movie Making Gone Wrong

chingalera says...

I have mixed feelings regarding cycling enthusiasts. The ones who see the world as a polluted shit-hole because of cars, who dress in biking-gear and ride to work everyday and don't own a car, the SAME people who obsessively recycle their garbage and preach about it to others (as if the world would be a better place if everyone "recycled").

It's THESE insects, OCD, tweakers that I can't stand, self-absorbed, self-righteous gimps on two skinny wheels.

Add to that description the DICKHEADS that preach cycling-over-automobiles who intentionally stick their ass in the center of the road while conducting traffic and talking smack to drivers sharing the road with Professor Suicide??

THOSE motherfuckers, can moisturize my ballsack.

I had an old roommate who died in San Francisco during a Critical Mass ride, the poor fucker got creamed by a truck driver who was ALSO a dickhead, of the opposite persuasion.

I certainly believe that anyone who chooses a bicycle as their only means of transportation who do so in a large cities where the majority of people commute to work from rural areas in cars everyday, have a fucking death wish.
San Fran, NYC, Chicago, Philly?? No problem. Any city where cyclists are not very prevalent on the roadways, yer an idiot plain and simple.

shatterdrose said:

And typical non-cyclist response. Nothing new to see here either.

All I see is a bunch of assholes who honk at me, try to hit me on purpose (one intentionally ran me over), and hundreds of people a day with absolutely no respect for someone else's life. And all that happened while in the bike lane. Oh, the guy who ran me over? He hit me because I WAS obeying traffic laws. Both the person behind him and the officer both concurred.

So yeah, nothing new to see here, right?
