Gyroscopic self-leveling pool table on A cruise ship - WOW!

messenger says...

It would be cool too to see the camera on the table, with the whole room shifting around it, which would be closer to the case, anyway.>> ^CheshireSmile:

i like how the camera is with the floor, so it looks like the table is wobbling, then it blew my mind when the balls weren't rolling around.

A mechanical gyro causing the movement would have delay and the balls would roll slightly. Assuming the table is above the ship's roll centre, the table would have to over correct for the ship's movement in order to keep the balls exactly in place. Most likely electronic gyros and good hydraulics with no stiction and powerful enough to not be affected by players putting pressure on the table.

Not really. Not saying it wouldn't be expensive, but the technology to do this has been around for a while: a few accelerometers, a gyroscope, and lots of actuators. And someone who knows a little control system programming.
Still pretty cool though.>> ^Spacedog79:
To work that precisely must take some serious engineering. I bet they're really expensive!

Actually, and judging by the title it is what it uses, but this can pretty much be done with a pivoting table and a large spinning gyro placed in the table. Much like a top, the spinning gyro would resist movement. There is probably something else that auto corrects the tilt for any time it is off (a gyro resist forces that try and tilt it, but if it finds a new tilt degree forcefully, it will keep it). It is really hard to tell from just seeing this video. Also if you went with the actuator route, something as simple as the actuators and an ipod alone could be used.
the most expensive part would probably still be the pool table, and the act of building the pool table mounted to the auto level device.

And if you really suck ass at billiards, like these two doofi, you can still blame it on the table.

I don't know what game -that- was, but it sure wasn't any type of pool I've ever played.

It really doesn't matter if it's the floor moving up and down while the table stays still, or vice versa. I seriously doubt any of your previously developed pool skills are going to help much here. This table makes it a real-time game, like tennis or baseball.

neat, and leaning on it doesn't seem to be a problem.
They should have hospital beds like this for seasick passengers.

HOSPITAL?
They should put that kind of bed in every stateroom.

I dunno, after a while I think the sensation of lying perfectly still and level while the walls around you shifted and tilted would freak me out.

Even understanding how the table works, it still blows my mind seeing it in action. Just cause of how awesome it is that we've figured something like this out.

Zig-zag LIKE A BOSS

I never jumped on the rollerblade fad, well it's not really a fad nowdays as it's own thing. I still skate occasionally but we have a roller rink in town, cheapest place for kids/teens/adults to hang out they serve all the way up to alcohol for adults. Adults get a red wrist band showing they can purchase alcohol. but they also have an arcade/batting cage/ air hockey tables/pool tables/etc

but the big thing is in the center a live dj spinning every thurs/fri/sat nights on the roller rink.

I take my kid every now and then and still skate with him, I'll be 35 next month and still have my "ginormous" skates I had to special order since my shoe size is 15. My son who is 14 wear a size 12 shoe so he definitely takes after dad

usually though he'll find some girl to skate with and I skate off to the arcade so as not to embarrass him

Pool fail

My friend did that same thing (not with the 8-ball though) when we played last night. The commentator is probably shocked because a professional shouldn't make that mistake.

This actually rarely happens. I've been playing pool for a very long time and have personally never seen it happen. Most of the time, and probably what you ended up seeing, was a ball going into the pocket, hitting the bumper in the pocket, and shooting the ball back out.

It's a lot rarer to actually see a ball drop to the bottom of a pocket and then come back out. Poolcleaner is right, that's one of the reasons why you see soft, or "netted" pockets on most pool tables, to keep something like this from ever occurring.

If this is 8-ball, it is odd at how hard he hit the ball. It seems a lot more likely to me that they are playing 9-ball, and he needed to get position on the 9-ball which was on the opposite rail (there's a ball in the video, but it's difficult to see what it is.)

I flat out dont think the guy is funny. He seems "on " all the time, I am sure he is not like that when he is home with his kids. I have an odd sense of humour and this guy doesn't do anything for me, I think he is a jack ass. Now sitting and having a beer with him around a pool table, probably an awesome guy.

Personally I think Colbert plays this idiot character too much, real or not, hes a fucktard for addressing these people with his " character ", That is all I see here.

i guess satire is lost on you then =(

Not not appreciated...just overused.

Ronnie O'Sullivan - maximum break (147) at World Open

BicycleRepairMan says...

AMAZING! To explain how awesome this is, I repost my snooker comment here (my most popular comment ever actually.. )

For those totally unfamiliar with Snooker, let me explain a couple of points: Putting the black earns you 7 points, but you'll have to put one red before putting another.

So there really is only ONE way to get 147. you have to put all the balls in exactly this order. red,black,red,black.... and so on until all reds are down, then you HAVE to do yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and finish it of with black. ONLY that order. He could NOT, for instance, pop down the blue or something in the middle there, it HAS to be in this particular order.

Now, most of you have probably tried pool. And if you think pool is hard (like me) try just looking at a snooker table, its about twice as big, and the balls are smaller, and the holes are f¤%&&ing IMPOSSIBLE to put into. Not only are they smaller, but unlike a pool table, they have these rounded edges that makes it even harder.

So when I said this is hard, I really, really mean it. Only an elite few in the world can do this, and it doesnt happen often. Even in big star games like this reaching 100 is considered really, really good. The fact that O'sullivan does this one in 6 and a half minutes, and another one in 5 minutes and 20 seconds, makes him one of the coldest sons'o'bitches on the whole planet IMO, and its one of the greatest sports achievements ever.

Points for the various colors:

red-1

yellow-2
green-3
brown-4
blue-5
pink-6
black-7

Every color, except red, gets placed back on the table, for as long as there are reds left, so you COULD do red-blue,red-yellow, red-black and so on, except then you are "using up" reds to put low-scoring balls, so to make 147, you have to start with red-black,red-black etc.

When all the reds are down, the remaining balls, have to be done in the order of their points, from 2 to 7.

Guy knocks himself out on pool table

kurtdh says...

Apparently the guy tried to lean on the pool stick, but it broke, sending his head into the pool table. Seems he got extremely unlucky and his temple actually hit the side of the table, instantly knocking him out.
