Dramatic Thunderstorm off the Sunshine Coast

The Random Stop - Anatomy of a Murder

Jerykk says...

This seemed pointless. They tried to make the event more impactful by overdramatizing it (showing the cop talking to his wife about their daughter, drawing out the gunfight, having the cop mention his family right before getting killed, etc) but it just made it feel like a cheesy Hollywood drama. The actual dashcam footage is way, way more impactful and really shows how sudden and brutal murder can be.

It's all too easy to hate cops (and authority figures in general) but it's also easy to forget that even a routine traffic stop can be a life-or-death situation. Cops have no idea who is behind the wheel. It could be a soccer mom or it could be a violent psychopath.

Glenn Beck Stunned to Find Out People Don't Like Him

cito says...

he should have went postal and mowed them all down with an AK

We love our guns hehe

He goes overboard, but he's right on many topics he just overdramatizes the topics which hurts his position even though he is right much of the time

just like Ron Paul, Ron Paul says the same stuff, but with less melodramatics. That's why Ron Paul is amazing imo. I wish we could get him as president and abolish the fed, and to end the era of "the new deal" that socialized everything when the country went bankrupt. I'll vote for Ron Paul to his end, but sadly in this type of world where the sheep is led by the media it will never happen.

The famous speech in the movie Network is 100% correct for all mass media and newspapers, there is no such thing as journalism anymore. it's 100% opinion pieces now and facts are never reported anymore. Long ago you could turn on radio or tv and news was just that news... but they wanted to get to the younger generation and they thought of news as boring... facts are always boring to the kids, so the era of opinionated news began. And it's all went downhill since.

Virtuality is Good SciFi (Scifi Talk Post)

I loved the concept, but I hated the choice of characters. It's like in BSG: the only reason I watched that awful show was Commander Adama (and the space fights), he was THE MAN. Every other character was an overdramatized idiot who always messed things up.

What is up with this trend? I'm so tired of "humanized" characters, screwed up immature ppl who have such a hard time getting along and fight over everything.

Who would select those bozos for a 200 billion dollar space mission?

How Do You Deal With "Trolls"? (Geek Talk Post)

imstellar28 says...

>> ^alien_concept:
The question wasn't how do we deal with trolls, it was how do you deal with trolls. Therefore not attempting to bring the community together to aid in a problem I believe exists, but asking individual opinions on something to generate debate. Also notice trolls is in quotation marks.

See "So, how do we manage these people?" in your second paragraph. Maybe that wasn't your intention, but there is no other way to interpret those words.

As for chastising, hardly. Bring out the emo why don't you.

So,
1. if I have different/conflicting ideas I'm a "conservative zealot, close minded, deep into group think, vague, arrogant, and close minded"
2. if I point out flaws in someone elses argument, I am "an intellectual snob"
3. if I care about basic human rights, I am "overdramatic"
3. If I shun personal attacks, I am "emo"

got it. great contributions by the "non-trolls" here.

you don't have to be "tactful" with me. you don't know sh*t about me so don't expect to hurt my feelings. i would also suggest abstaining from forcing labels on people you don't know sh*t about. you (multi-directed) can't understand my comments, much less your own, so what makes you think you're capable of analyzing a complete stranger based on a handful of remarks? that would be arrogance.

when I first posted, I was never even addressing you personally alien so i dont know why you are trying to defend yourself or take offense to statements, i was speaking in general terms and it just happened to be you who posted about this topic which is the specific manifestation of a larger issue i have with the direction of this site.

How Do You Deal With "Trolls"? (Geek Talk Post)

alien_concept says...

SDgundamX makes a great point, but god i'd hope there were enough broad minded people on this site to not put a label on someone for difference in political/social or "controversial" views.

It seems to have completely slipped the attention of some people in this thread, but this talk wasn't started because I personally have any big issue with any trolls. Just a means of bringing about a discussion that keeps coming up in other threads and bringing it all into one place. I very much sat on the fence with my original post blurb. And actually my real motive was to highlight the seeming difference between the accetability of homophobia in comments.

I absolutely think that spite could cause people to bring about someone's banning if you used such things as downvoting comments. It probably needs to be a community decision if it ever got to that point, just as ban is a 2 person decision.

As for oppression and human rights, although I do think that's a bit overdramatic I can kind of see how it would feel if you were leaning towards the less liberal viewpoints, or even just taking a stand against the norm and playing devil's advocate all the time. Sometimes I think we can dismiss points from others because they don't fit in with our personal ethics. And because the majority here are liberal, it comes across like the more conservative are being singled out or trashed. But what I think is really the case is that those people feel like they are fighting a battle against so many and feel "oppressed" because of that. When from what I can see the majority are very accepting of different viewpoints, even if they're never in a million years going to agree with them.

There have been some amazing comments and ideas here, I love watching it all unfold and it gives a chance to see where people you are unaware of sit with their opinions regardless of subject matter.

One more thing, the last thing we need here is intellectual snobbery. That is completely disgusting to me, to even bring into question someones intelligence to make an argument is scraping the barrel and those people should know better.

Starbucks Stores Waste Millions of Gallons of Water a Day

spoco2 says...

Very wasteful, although the music is a tad overdramatic.

Just cause I like talking up Australia given any chance:

"But staff at Melbourne's Swanston St store, one of the few left in Victoria, said taps weren't left on, and denied the practice had ever been employed. "That's never happened here. We don't waste water," the store manager said."

One Brutal Scene From Pan's Labyrinth

alien_concept says...

I do see your point actually, but I hadn't made any illusion of the fact that it was a nasty violent scene as the title quite clearly shows. This is just a clip of how gruesomely violent this film can be. I think saying it's snuff is just being overdramatic, seeing as it quite clearly is fiction. Of course you're right, this doesn't give any context of the film, but that's quite obvious, most clips don't. I think you're wasting time better spent on watching vids you may have a chance of liking rather than something that from what you've said, you were going to hate anyway. Maybe just the chance to vent your spleen a little bit? I dunno, whatever. An opinion is and will always be appreciated by me.

Dear Texas, (Election Talk Post)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

It's mainly the ease with which she jumped on the neo-con war on terror band wagon and still continues to beat the war drums to this day.

It's her connections to Wal*Mart, Ruppert Murdoch and the DLC.

It's her cowardly retreat on healthcare.

It's the strange praise lavished upon her by Coulter, Limbaugh, etc.

She, like her husband, is the Neo-con darling of her election.

My gut, like Dags', isn't too thrilled either. But who knows? I could be wrong. Whose to say what would happen should she become President.

I just don't trust her, and as we all know, platforms and plans don't really mean anything come inauguration day. Many say she is just playing the game, and will become SuperHillary once in office. I don't buy it.

PS: Yes, I know I've been a bit overdramatic today. Sue me.

Phage - The Virus that Cures

gluonium says...

oh how I pine for the days when you could actually learn something from NOVA and HORIZON. This is a prime example of how good science shows can be. this is about a billion times better than anything either of them offer today. no glitzy, insulting, dumbed down "HEY WATCH THIS ISNT IT SUPER FUCKING SEXYCOOL YEAAAAAAAA!!" bullshit. Just science, honest information and good journalism. The story is damn interesting in its own right, not because some absurdly straining, overdramatic, treacle infused voice over begs me to think it is.
