Vox: Why video games are made of tiny triangles

ant says...

Wow. That's an impressive list. I only played the old games like the original MDK and Neverwinter Nights. Hey, I just finished the main quest in the original Oblivion game! Which developer roles were you doing in each game?

CRASH: The Year Video Games Died

SDGundamX says...

The years after the crash but before the appearance of Nintendo were Golden Years for my brother and me. We were picking up cartridges for our Intellivision for a dollar a piece (or less) at retail stores and sometimes for free at local garage sales. I know our game library was over 50 games at one point, which as kids we never would have been able to afford if not for the crash.

We also switched to PC gaming. My dad received one of the very first laptops (with an LCD screen) from his job and I managed to get Bard's Tale up and running on it. Some of my friends went the Commodore 64 route.

So after the crash, we never stopped gaming, really, and just transitioned to the NES when it came out. But of course games became more expensive then. We gave up on owning anything but the most popular games (Mario, Zelda, etc.) and instead would swap games with classmates to try out other stuff. Mom and pop used games stores also popped up around that time and usually we could trade in an old game for a new one with an out-of-pocket expense at around $5, which was around my weekly allowance at the time and let me get a new game once a week.

Final Fantasy 7 REMAKE - Trailer E3

Shepppard says...

...So, Square enix has actually been on record for the past.. at least like, 10 years, ever since the tech demo for PS3 came out saying "We don't want to just remake old games for the sake of it. We feel that we need to surpass the stories we've told previously before we decide to possibly re-visit them in the future."

And with FFXV looking like it's probably going to shatter the entirety of the franchise in terms of awesomeness, it seems like they're finally ready to actually remake a lot of peoples favourite.

We can't think up any new ideas, team, what do we do?

How about we do a full graphical remake of FF7

That would be a license to print money from gullible gamers...I LIKE IT!

GOT GAMES? (Blog Entry by eric3579)

Phooz says...

Hey! I see a comment from 9 months ago so I figure I'm not too late! Love the old cartridges. My brother and I were always SEGA men ourselves. I have two SEGA Saturn games that I might offload through eBay for a pretty penny. One is Dragonforce worth roughly $150 now and the other is Panzer Dragoon Saga worth roughly $300 or so. These games gave me so much joy and entertainment as a kid and it makes me happy to see that other appreciate them as much to this day! Hope your old games found good homes and are loved.

The Way Games Work: NES Zapper

lucky760 says...

Fascinating, especially because since 1985 I have ALWAYS wondered how the light gun worked, but I just never looked into it.

I bought some USB NES controllers and got an emulator and lots of old games so my kids can play when they're big enough, but I wish I could have an actual NES console for them, like one that looks like the original but maybe is just all software-based or something.

Xbox One Kinect Calls Foul on Bad Language

Lawdeedaw says...

Because people want them "real" as possible. I am fine with the old games on NES because I don't care. But if you bought the Xbox one well then you obviously need it as close to life to feel complete as possible. His desire, not mine.

Also, didn't know a player was a commentator? Was he just spectating the game and not involved in "playing?" If so I can understand. John Madden used to do this all the time...

newtboy said:

Ahhh, but if we're going to use the 'would it happen in real life?' postulate, I would point out that he was commenting as if he were a commentator, not as a player, so why was one player/team penalized?
I don't know why that would be a decent reason for this kind of thing either, most games are NOT like real life in most ways, even this game has many elements in it that are completely unrealistic in order to make it a fun, playable game. If the Xbox1 is going for this kind of unrealistic realism across the board, I think I'll stick with my ps3. I play games for fun, not to allow the speech police in my home. (That said, I don't play online or use the microphone/speech feature, so this likely wouldn't ever happen to me).
I'm just guessing, but is this a feature of multiplayer meant to keep people from spouting obscenities in quasi-public arenas in order to limit customer exposure to unwanted cursing? That would actually be reasonable, especially if it can be turned off with the agreement of both players in an online game.

How Superman shaves.

Even though I don't game, I still like to go there to see old games' remakes and sequels. I still like Blue's links of Flash games and non-games as well.

Not sure why. I've been using Engadget/Joystiq but I think I just got out of the habit and forgot. I preferred it over some of the other older sites that were formed about the same time, who's names escape me now (Shaq something or another and one other one).

Retro City Rampage. Possibly the coolest retro game ever

oritteropo says...

I sometimes look at new games, and wonder if the developers have forgotten what made the old games fun... but you only have to look at the retro gaming and the home brew games to see that not EVERY developer has forgotten.

This would have fitted right in to the 80s, C64, Atari, Speccy, NES... it would've just seemed right on all of them

Grand Theft Auto V - Trailer #2

00Scud00 says...

That's because one day an exec somewhere woke up and realized that all those options cost more money, execs usually suck.

Any news on the gameplay view?
You know how GTA3, Vice City, S.A. were all centered behind the player but in IV it was kinda "over the shoulder". Ruined the game for me. IS V going to be the same?
Funny how old games gave you a ton of options like that but modern ones are more restrictive for some reason.

Have you played the beta? While the game as a whole is nearly 8 years old, the graphics of this latest expansion are the most beautiful yet. I'm frickin excited!

The content industry has made everybody a pirate.

ToastyBuffoon says...

This man has nailed it. Besides fixing the law for digital properties, the consumer needs a reason to want to pay for the content he/she is accessing or downloading. There needs to be some kind of real value attached to buying the digital content, and not just because "it's the moral thing to do".

A good example is a site like Good Old Gaming. They sell old classic PC games without DRM. The real value is not just treating their customers right, but also adding things like soundtracks and wallpaper. I could easily pirate anything on there that they release, but I don't because they are offering me good value AND convenience for my dollar.
