If you are inclined to believe in some over-watching intelligence that is creating and playing us as a hobby (and I understand and sympathize with that emotional need so long as you don't start burning unbelievers) then why bother with complicated half-science based justifications?

If I were someone else here I might comment on the desirability of some number of those submissions as relates to the quality and genuine purpose of this or any site for that matter. Why someone down votes is personal to them. There is no right way or wrong way to down vote. The idea that someone put in the time to sift a video as a good reason not to down vote it is in my opinion ridiculous.

Now for a personal rant that has nothing to do with you, bjornenlinda: This site was set up to weed out video mediocrity and have its members exposed to the best videos on the internet. Its not suppose to be about quantity of videos you can sift. Its suppose to be about the quality of the ones you sift or videos you love and just have to share. It use to say at the top of the site "VideoSift quality control". I think the site has somewhat got away from that and now is about how many videos i or we can get sifted and the quality of sifts have suffered because of it. "leveling up" use to be a byproduct of sifting, not why you did it. I will now step away from the podium

You can afford...being the prime question here.
Most cars these days (read: not performance cars) are made on the cheap.
Forged connecting rods, and billet valves / cam shafts / high tensile head bolts are not cheap, therfore they dont go into the vast majority of modern engines.

Putting a turbo on your engine alone would vastly increase compression ratios, stressing just about every internal part in the car. The poverty pack econo-cars can not handle any more than about 4-6lb's of boost before things start heating up, warping, and shaking themselves apart violently.

Cost to get things up to spec?

erm....well a good set of H beam forged con-rods can cost you anywhere from 600 upwards (generally upwards...a lot upwards), and thats just the part, not including installation. Getting the valves reworked, vavle springs, cam shaft....thats ~2k+ if youre doing it on the cheap.

Then you need an intercooler to take the heat out of the intake air (as the turbo compresses intake air, and therfore heats it up) so as to keep the economy levels up....and piping to go with it, your looking at another 1k at least.

Then you need an ECU mod, piggy back if you can get away with it, around the 1k figure, otherwise a full standalone can cost upwards of 1.5k.

Then you need to program and tune, upwards again of 1.5k.

To turbo a non-turbo economy engine povery-pack car, you are looking at LEAST 5k+, and thats doing it on mega budget, you wont get any reliability or safety out of it.

Before you even get to put the turbo on, which itself is about 300-1.5k depending on what turbine you purchase, you also need a turbo manifold to redirect all of the exhaust gas into a turbo, and have an outlet pipe that allows waste-gate dumps into your exhaust. So you also need to get your cat-back system redone too, which is about 700-1500 to get it done right.

Doing it right? Start counting from 10k....and keep going.

Doing it right would be to upgrade the breaks (bigger discs, bigger calipers, bigger master cylinder), the suspension (coilovers), and doing some serious chassis strengthening to take the increased loads (front/rear sway bar upgrades, front/rear strut tower bars etc..)

Its not cheap unfortunately

I would guess he would find better efficiency by reducing drag. That big fan on the front is definitely not reducing drag. However, since it isn't increasing the frontal area of the car, its effect on drag probably isn't massive. Of course, then taking into account the extra mass of the fan itself and the generation hardware, I would be willing to bet that it results in a significant net loss in efficiency.
Additional: I gotta say, I do find it really odd that he would have the skills necessary to build the thing, but not the common sense to see its obvious flaw.

It's effect is to increase the drag by exactly as much as the energy the generator produces, plus enough more to offset the inefficiencies of said fan and generator.
You -cannot- gain efficiency this way, that's basic physics. If you disagree, I suggest you head back to high school for a refresher.


Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I wasn't disagreeing with anything -you- said except to change "willing to bet" into "absolutely certain". All the physics-challenges posts previously got my frustration levels up, and demanded a response. Yours was one of the few reasonable starting points (as opposed to the utterly uninformed majority).


Most of those earlier posts had a knowledge of physics similar to thinking that mounting a fan blowing on the sail of a sailboat would make it move. Quoting that sort of thinking is giving it too much credit.

I've been a fan of the game for some time. I started playing Beta Weekend Event 1 and every BWE after, and any stress test that I could. Since launch I haven't spent as much time on it as I would like, but unlike a certain other MMO it doesn't matter as there is no monthly fee. You can drop it and come back days later without feeling you wasted time playing other games or living life because it is buy to play. With WoW and SWTOR I often felt I had to play at least $15 worth each month to make it worth while. I really don't know why SWTOR is going full Free to Play rather than Buy to Play given the costs to make the game. Most games are going to cost the same amount anyhow, and then you get a game with a huge amount of content for that $60.

The only complaints I've heard were those who wanted endgame raids, those who miss the trinity, and the usual launch woes. (I still can't link my GW1 and GW2 accounts and customer service hasn't fixed it yet, though I've had a ticket open since the early launch for those who pre-purchased the game.)

I like WoW, and keep my free account. Even if they went BtP or FtP, I would still play GW2 more as I think it is just a better game play experience. I liked SWTOR, and while I don't pay the fee anymore (soon to be moot anyhow) I keep the client up to date and still dip in on the free trial on occasion as I do WoW. But for me, I much prefer GW2. I find it near the perfect game experience for me... now I don't watch people play it on Twitch as I do other games like DOTA 2 or some others, but then I don't watch people play any MMO.

I got an i3 and a GTS 450, so a very low powered system, but it plays very well and still manages to look nice. The new beta drivers I installed from nVidia seem to favor over heating the card and shutting the machine down, so I had to turn some detail down to stop that, but the game still looks great.

Now I must level up so I can find that frog juicing quest if it is real...
