Some of these are blatantly obvious, but I wanted to compile a list of the references, parodies and tributes in the video.

@0:14 "What's with the masks? You guys shy?" probably refers to Shyguys, one of the basic enemies in SMB2.
@0:36 "Enough [coins] to buy 10,000 new lives." refers to the free life you would receive for each 100 coins you collected.
@0:56 "Well excuuuse me, princess!" is from the Legend of Zelda cartoon.
@1:01 "...Bowser, the king of the koopas." If I remember correctly, Bowser didn't get his name until SMB3. He was known only as "King Koopa" in SMB1.
@1:13 "Minus World"
@1:16 "Shit just got real" and the camera work are a scene from Bad Boys 2.
@1:25 "Here's the cash, you reptile." refers to Bowser being a giant turtle in the games. The scene being set in a dinosaur exhibit may be a reference to the real Super Mario Bros movie where the villain (Dennis Hopper) was actually some sort of evolved dinosaur.
@1:30 "Your princess is in another castle." is the infamous line uttered by every toadstool upon being rescued at the end of each world.
@1:38 "It's a trap!"
@2:16 "Now you're playing with power" was the tagline for the original Nintendo.
@3:40 The music Mario is whistling is part of the overworld and underwater themes from Super Mario World. I want to say I remember it being in SMB3, but I can't find or remember where.
@3:52 "It'sa me, Mario!" was something of a catchphrase of Mario's for a while. The cartoon was the first place I can remember hearing it.

What have I missed? I suspect there's a lot of movie references that I didn't catch.

Im one of the few people who never played the legend of zelda games, but even I am excited about this one as long as it really works.

I saw Video Games Live when they came to Tokyo and that version brought tears to my eyes (Koji Kondo, Zelda's original composer, played the piano during it), but this... this is just absolutely mindblowing. Definitely will be watching for a CD release like these guys did for their Square/Enix concert a couple years back.


Yeah, i saw VGL too the first time they came to Paris, and it was great. This, however, is nothing short of a masterpiece.

I really expected it to go into the Top 15 to be honest, proving once more than i'll never understand what my fellow sifters likes.

I'm one of the few who actually beat Bionic Commando on the NES. You know, the game that was intensely impossible to get through on certain levels? The one with no save feature? The one that took nearly six hours to play through? Yeah, that one.

But at that time, games like The Legend of Zelda, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Contra, were the fun games. Before that time, for computer games, was ones like Empire, Wing Commander, Space Quest, and even Zork. And before those games: Pong. While the graphics of games have improved tremdously, the game play has remained a constant.

Castlevania 2, Rescue the Embassy, Russian Attack, Jackal, JAWS, and others, were enjoyable games for their day. COD, WoW, EQ, and others, that are popular now, will soon be retired in favoror of newer, more graphic intensive games in 5-10 years.

Sometimes playing an old videogame is like going back to a playground you used to run around at. I do the same thing with super mario brothers, fire up the emulator and run through SMB1 and usually SMB3 occasionally Super Mario World.
This is the first time i'll be running through a game this big again though. And I will never, ever, play world of warcraft again.

I suggest taking ecstasy and playing the Legend of Zelda: A link to the past.

or taking some acid and playing Super Mario World

Better graphics don't equal a better game, sometimes you just have to change your reference point
