Zero Punctuation: Bioshock 2

entr0py says...

I'm surprised that Yahtzee didn't mention that, shortly after the sales figures of the first game came in (huge success), the publisher (2k) immediately took the franchise away from it's creators (Irrational Games) and gave it to a different developer (2K Marin) to knock off a hasty sequel. He notices who the developers are when it comes to Silent Hill games, why not now?

Speaking in general that's a trend that really bothers me among the gaming press. Publishers want to push the idea that the developers don't really matter and are interchangeable, and everyone should just refer to games as being from the publisher. And somehow the gaming press has signed on.

Think about it, have you ever read a book review where the author is never mentioned but they just say it's by Penguin books? Or ever been got caught up in the hype about that new album everyone wants "Rock Music" by Sony Music? (after all musicians are a dime a dozen)

But I'm just venting about that. Otherwise all his points were spot on. I don't think Bioshock 2 is badly made, it's pretty well made, I just think it's soulless. And a disappointment compared to the true sequel that Irrational could have delivered a few years from now.

Fox News - Lowering The Minimum Wage Better For Workers

TheFreak says...

I just don't buy the argument that lowering the minimum wage helps the people on the lowest economic tier.

First of all, my experience working with homeless people appears to be different from yours GFreek. What I find is a mix of 3 categories of individuals.
1. People who are disabled to the point that they cannot care for themselves. These people should really be supported by society but are on the streets for lack of any kind of social programs that would help them.
2. Individuals who choose to live on the streets and have learned to work the system. It's an unavoidable group that will exist no matter what you do.
3. A very, very few people who have been knocked off their feet and will get back up in a short time.

Minimum wage doesn't really affect any but the third group and there really aren't many of them from my experience. Lowering the minnimum wage would just make that group larger.

No. It's hard enough to survive and provide for a family if you have to make do with 7.25 an hour. The idea of employing MORE people with LESS ability to survive on the wages they're being payed is absurd. If you want to help people then fight the top heavy pay structure that's developed in the US over the past 4 decades. Salaries at the top levels of our companies have been hyper-inflated at the expense of everyone else.

Israel keeps up Palestinian evictions 04 Nov 09

HollywoodBob says...

The problem is that the US is so reluctant to tell the Israelis to knock off their bullshit because it has become a situation where if you say the slightest thing against Israel's policies you're automatically branded an anti-Semite and there goes any chances of getting campaign contributions from any Jewish organization.

Way too nice and unworn shoes for a "real" homeless dude. The outfit matches the groove though. Excellent stuff.

This is not necessarily always a correct assumption; homeless people in big cities often get clothing donated to various shelters--the nicer the area the nicer the clothes. I saw homeless people in New York with Burberry (or knock-off) scarves, wearing Pumas and Nike track pants.

The Inspiration Behind Beyonce's "Single Ladies" Video

BoneRemake says...

THANKYOU

I seen this video on videosift before and I noticed the similarities IMMEDIATELY once I wanted to know what the hell kayne west was talking about when he was a huge douche bag to taylor swift. Long story short... yea, exactly what I thought but I couldn't find the video, all I know of that they said wa " walk it out " or something to that effect, I have yet to even watch the video I am commenting on, but I know its the one. " walk it out or step it out " what ever the video of byonce is just a knock off of this video.

I live by the sea in england, in the summer there are glorious days of blazing heat, light breeze, and complete solitude in an untapped wealth of beauty. This means that i was able to swim from very young, i know very few people who can't. I feel that this is somehow connected to living by the sea, but it's quite a large target to avoid, so i can't pinpoint why i make this connection.

The seafront is excellent for biking. I'm more of an endurance biker than a mountain biker. When the weather is clement i do 7 miles of biking every day and i maintain a speed as close to 20mph as i can. I used to do 14 but it's no fun to do 2 circuits of 7 miles, and if i go another 7 miles then i have to go through one of the most disgusting tourist towns ever and often have narrowly avoided getting attacked or accidentally knocked off my bike by yobs (former) or pedestrians (latter) who don't realise that they're on a cyclepath. I have been called a psychopath as i was on a cyclepath and the humour was lost on me at the time.

Unfortunately the weather in other seasons is quite poor, living by the sea means it's always windy here and i'm not able to bike so much during those times. I fill that in by swimming 4 times a week but i'm only just starting this. It's so much harder to swim, i only end up doing about 600-700 metres which seems like nothing but is actually quite exhausting over a 30 minute period. But of course i thought that about biking when i first started and i'm pretty handy now. I reckon i could do well in amateur competitions, but i secretly harbour rogue brain cells that tell me i'm not as good as i think.

It's a funny thing about exercise, starting is hard, but once you're really into the mindframe and if you're doing it every day or near enough, then you start to feel bad on days where you don't exercise.

I also enjoy writing which is why i'm prone to bursts of self indulgent attempts at linguistic intricacies! But i never find the time to sit down and properly write. I have ideas and i work on them in my head, but when i sit down to write, i find it so hard. I always want to write every sentence perfectly for a start, and i end up spending an hour working on a paragraph and i'm never happy with it when it's done.

K i've bored myself now

First Modern Warfare 2 Video Shows Killstreaks gameplay

I love Infinity Ward. I can't believe millions of gamers bought into the cheap knock-off crap that was Treyarch's World at War because of how great IW's 4th iteration of the franchise was.

Stargate: Universe Comic-Con Trailer

EDD says...

I've been moderately enthusiastic about the Stargate franchise for years now (and with their recent feature movie's plot directly implying that all religions are false, how could I not be ) but even disregarding that, this looks like a serious attempt at a decent knock-off of all the good stuff BSG was praised for.
Me likey.

"I Made The World's Favorite Font"

It's only the "world's favorite" because it's one of the limited choices of fonts in the OS you get thanks to Microsoft's monopoly. I don't think Mac people download Comic Sans knock-offs because it's awesome.

James Randi suspended from Youtube

drattus says...

>> ^BicycleRepairMan:
I think its much more likely this is simply a bunch of religious wackos flagging videos and bitching to YT, and of course YT doesnt have time to go through all the videos and shit like that, so they just close the account, its probably even an automated process. ie: "if account X has Y number of flags, close account."

I think that's exactly what it is and I've had a mirror of the video up as well, one of the first. They suspended Thunderfoot a while back and they've hit others as well for what seems to be the same reason. Just get enough wack jobs to decide they want someone shut up and YouTube goes and does that for them.

I've got no problem with calling that censorship. Yeah it's private property and we have no "right" to free speech, but if they want to keep their reputation and our business they might want to consider it a bit anyway. At least justify the suspensions according to their own posted rules, knock off this unexplained crap. Even the people being suspended sometimes aren't sure why.

Why Spin-offs don't work - 1970s Spiderwoman Cartoon

K0MMIE says...

Yeah, I don't get the point of this title either, she is not a spin-off or a knock-off. She just shares a similar name. She just recently had one of THE most pivotal roles in the last Marvel Event Secret Invasion.
