Kanye West still misunderstands the fish stick joke

Alien: In Memoriam

ChaosEngine says...

Yep.

When the crew of Nostromo died, you felt like there was nothing they could have done (apart from Dallas, who stupidly let Kane back on the ship).

When the marines died, you felt they were sent into an unwinnable situation.

In Prometheus*, I was actively rooting for the aliens/engineer/giant rolling ship to kill all the fucking idiots involved so humanities average intelligence would go UP.

"I fucking love rocks!"

* and apparently Covenant, though I haven't seen it.

Emergency goalie steals the show in Chicago

MilkmanDan says...

Loved this whole story. After thinking about it for a while, I figured that Foster was probably going to get an NHL record for highest "career save percentage".

1) The contract that the emergency goalies sign makes them official NHL professional athletes for a day.
2) He came in and made 7 shots on 7 saves, a 100% save percentage.
3) Official player, official stats earned, yet extremely unlikely that he'll ever see another minute of ice time or shot against ... therefore, into the record books.

I looked at NHL stats page and a few other sources to try to figure out if that was correct, but everything I looked at limited "Career Save Percentage" stats to players with a high minimum number of games.

Then I saw this story:
https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/blackhawks-emergency-goalie-scott-foster-accountant-jets/

Confirms that YES, he'll be in the records books, but he'll be tied with 17 other guys all having a 100% save percentage (after having faced between 1-17 shots).

So even though he's tied with 17 other guys, dude is set for life for a story to tell his kids / grandkids / strangers in the bar:

"So yeah, I'm a former NHL goalie. Retired with a career save percentage better than Brodeur or Roy. Left the game literally at the top of the charts."

I think Patrick Kane and/or Jonathan Toews should give their salary from this one game to the guy since the contract he signed precludes the team from paying him... (both make $10.5 million for this season, so 1/82 of that would be a bit over $125k)

Alien: Covenant - Official Red Band Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

3 and 4 were Citizen goddamn Kane compared to Prometheus.

3 wasn't great, 4 was daft but stylish, but neither made me root for the giant rolling spaceship to crush the protagonists and put us all out of our goddamn misery.

newtboy said:

Really, you would rather shame them for Prometheus instead of Alien 3 or 4?!? Prometheus had it's problems, but 1/2 alien mama Ripley clone and a level 5 biohazard containment ship that returns home automatically if things go wrong, I mean, come on. Prioritize.

Warcraft - Trailer Tease

mentality says...

Acknowledging that you may be wrong does not mean you were not being incredibly condescending.

Will this be the next Citizen Kane? No. And no one is asking it to be. It has the potential to be a well crafted summer blockbuster. And no, a big budget blockbuster is not inherently inferior to a small indie movie like Moon. Duncan Jones did not base himself to make a movie for the masses. It's that kind of elitist attitude that is condescending.

And no, you cannot comment on the quality of the movie based on a 15 second teaser, so far before release. All it shows is that Duncan Jones respects the source material, at least visually.

And as for Warcraft not being known for its story? Well, they made a good movie out of a Disney theme park ride, so anything can happen.

Did you read the rest of my comment?

I acknowledged that I could very well be wrong. But this shows me nothing that makes me want to see it, and frankly it looks like a fairly boring retread of the last hobbit movie.

Chicken Lady: Homecoming - Kids in the Hall

poolcleaner says...

Kids in the Hall sketches are also more thought provoking than SNL. SNL is more of a contemporary pop culture reference machine like Mad magazine and Family Guy.

The pop cultural references in KitH are to things of higher value like early cinema classics (Citizen Kane), Nietzsche, Morrison Hotel, surrealism, film noir; and with heavy pro LGBT, pro environmental (the beaver!) and anti corporate themes; displaying the frivolity of office politics, and the HARDCORE Canadian law enforcement.

What does SNL give but a couple'a chuckles, eh?

Fairbs said:

I think Kids did recurring characters better than SNL. SNL beats them to death and the sketches are WAY too long.

Honest Trailers - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

ChaosEngine says...

It was a fun, well made action flick with decent characters. It wasn't Citizen Kane but it was an excellent example of what it wanted to be.

Grand Budapest Hotel though, was very overrated IMHO. Not that it was bad, but it wasn't nearly as good as The Life Aquatic.

EvilDeathBee said:

I need to watch it again. I didn't find it as amaze-balls as everyone made it out to be (still enjoyed it though), although when I saw it, it was right after seeing The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Captain America 2 trailer

packo says...

Yeah, who wants to have special effects in a superhero movie... right!?!
on that note, the winter soldier storyline was one of the best (if not the best) Captain America storylines in 20+ yrs... with the recent infringement on personal freedoms/liberties in the states, this movie has a good opportunity to have some social commentary... is it going to be Citizen Kane? probably not, but a smart, entertaining, thrill ride? quite possibly. I'm looking forward to it

Citizen Kane, obvious special effects too... didn't see it (but really I did)
