When Plants Attack: A Time-Lapse

eric3579 says...

For a Venus Flytrap

The process continues until all that's left of the insect is its hard exoskeleton. (Unlike humans and other vertebrates, who have an internal rigid skeleton made out of calcified bone tissue, insects and arachnids use a more flexible, external exoskeleton to both protect and form the framework for their bodies.) Once the nutrients are depleted from the acidic bath, the plant reabsorbs the digestive fluid. This serves as a signal to reopen the trap, and the remains of the insect are usually either washed away in the rain or blown away by the wind.

Lovely sound effects.

I want to see what happens after a plant's finished digesting its victim. Does it dissolve the entire thing or does it drop a carcass when it reopens?

John McCain on the Senate Torture Report

speechless says...

I'm not trying to minimize what McCain went through, but I do think it's interesting how, for some people, their views only change or differ from their party if they are personally affected. Most of humanity knows torture is wrong without having to actually be tortured.

He was tortured. A lot of guys were tortured. But if you look into it, you'll find McCain is far from "an honourable man and one who has the best interests of his country at heart" and has done plenty to earn the fury of other vets (who were also tortured) by blocking access to P.O.W. / M.I.A. records.

McCain served in the Vietnam war, was shot down and captured in October 1967, and was mistreated and tortured as a prisoner of war. This is the first hand knowledge he claims.

Although it's always hard to know how accurately the media portrays people, and especially in the U.S., he has always struck me as an honourable man and one who has the best interests of his country at heart.

I'm afraid I can't say the same of the men who supported mistreatment of prisoners, or those who attempted to hide it.

Bill Nye: The Earth is Really, Really Not 6,000 Years Old

shinyblurry says...

Hi Poolcleaner,

I think you're arguing from a false premise, that a belief in Creation science does not contribute to what you call true science. Some of the greatest scientists who ever lived were creationists. Here is a list of a few of them:

http://creationsafaris.com/wgcs_toc.htm

Their belief that God created an orderly Universe based on laws (which is the reason we call them laws) highly influenced and inspired their exploration of the cosmos. Here are a couple of quotes:

When with bold telescopes I survey the old and newly discovered stars and planets when with excellent microscopes I discern the unimitable subtility of nature’s curious workmanship; and when, in a word, by the help of anatomical knives, and the light of chemical furnaces, I study the book of nature I find myself oftentimes reduced to exclaim with the Psalmist, How manifold are Thy works, O Lord! In wisdom hast Thou made them all!

-Robert Boyle, Chemistry

The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator.

-Louis Pasteur, Medicine

Creation science is a collection of data which supports the idea that the Earth is young. Some of the theories within creation science are testable and predictive, but as a whole you cannot put it in a lab and perform a measurement any more than you could do so for macroevolution, because they both concern what happened in the past. You cannot observe macroevolution happening anywhere nor can you subject it to empirical testing. You can make observations and inferences based on a theory, but that is subject to interpretation.

Hottest Year Ever (Global Warming Hiatus) - SciShow

Trancecoach says...

@Taint, The skeptics don't "deny" that the climate changes. They are skeptical of the reasons why it changes, the claims of consistent warming, and the claims about the catastrophic effect of whatever is caused by human activity. Also, I don't think I need to go into the debunking of that 97% claim (science is not a function of votes or consensus, but of evidence). In any event, most of the "debate" about this topic is a waste of time considering the "believers" are mostly not climate scientists and that no one is actually doing very much about it in their own lives.

So, straw man opinions about so-called "deniers" is a pathetic attempt to substitute character "analysis" for actual scientific evidence of man-made global warming of catastrophic proportions. Evidence of which has yet to be provided.

So the real reason many people don't "believe" has to do with not being presented with actual evidence and instead being given false claims (97%) about "consensus" (which is irrelevant to science), and claims of "settled" science (also meaningless in real science), postulated mostly by writers, politicians, and activists with no scientific credentials.

No one really argues with the idea that the climate changes. But, rather, what caused the change, to what degree, and what the effects will be... Well, let's just say for now that all (not a few but all) climate models have been proven wrong.
So no, there are no climate change "deniers," but plenty of people, and many scientists, who don't believe certain claims about specific aspects, even when believers keep repeating the "consensus" canard.

I honestly don't think believers actually believe their own claims of impending greenhouse gas climate catastrophe. If they did, they would all drive hybrids and go vegetarian. Also, most "green" tech companies wouldn't fail (like most of them do). Why do the climate change believers drive their SUVs and fly to their holiday vacation without regard to the impending climate doom? They are polluting the air, are they not? By their own theories, they also warm up the climate.

Contrary to consensus claims, nearly every aspect of climate change is being debated by the scientific community. Can you name a specific aspect of it that is not under debate (without going into some general "climate change" "consensus" canard)? Such claims are too broad to mean anything of any relevance. What specific aspect? What about it?

German engineers being told they've been targeted by GCHQ

radx says...

Last week, The Intercept published the Quadrennial Intelligence Community Review of 2009 which outlined industrial espionage.

Let's look at the list of German companies in question today: DTAG, NetCologne, Stellar, CETel and IABG. Two internet providers, two operators of satellite communications and a service provider with close ties to Airbus, ESA and EPCIP. All prime targets for industrial espionage, IABG and DTAG in particular.

A penetration of DTAG alone should be quite enough to convince our Attorney General to start an investigation, and the records about the penetration into Stellar's server centre are even more detailed.

So it's not just another violation of Article 10 of our Basic Law, it's industrial espionage. But I know very well that fuck all is going to come out of it, given how subservient our government is.

By the way, Firstlook Media and DER SPIEGEL does not equal Germany.

---------------
Edit:

Sorry for being cranky, anyway. I suppose for people outside Germany the interesting parts are that a) NSA/GCHQ own global communications and b) security for satellite net access is appaling.

The second, in particular, is rather frustrating, given that a great number of users of these are bound to be persons of interest otherwise unreachable through HUMINT. Quite the low hanging fruit, isn't it...
