Batmanning -- the head injury version of Planking

Lawdeedaw (Member Profile)

This is why you wear a god damn helmet!

blankfist says...

The guy @0:52 needs to tighten his trucks. That's his problem. But fucking hilarious especially when he screams out before hitting the grass.

These hit close to home for me. I've suffered a concussion and been knocked the fuck out by falling off my skateboard. All the head injuries explain a lot about me, huh?

There is a lot of debate about helmets. Some claim there is no reduction in injury where helmets are mandatory. Some even claim that helmets increase certain risks. I can't find the video/article I recently saw, but you can see the controversy on the wikipedia page.

Yeah, that's why athletes don't wear helmets, right?

The argument in that article is absolutely stupid. Of course a helmet may not save you if a car crashed into you. That wasn't what it was meant for. It was meant to provide protection for your skull, in any sort of calamity. Yeah, a child may die from being strangled by the helmet, but if you would rather them risk getting a head-smash into concrete that's your own parenting decision.
There isn't "a lot" of debate, and "some" people just spout crap to get more funding.
Millions of dollars go into research on helmets every year, you really think we'd be using them if they weren't useful?

Also: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12333783

"The most obvious reason to wear a helmet is that doing so protects you in the event of an accident. But by how much?
Back in 2001, Australian experts set out to determine just this by trawling medical literature published in the past decade.
Their analysis found that wearing a helmet cut the risk of head injury and brain injury by half, and facial injury by nearly a third."

New Airplane Seats - You Cannot Actually Even Sit On Them

moodonia says...

I read somewhere that the British air safety people have said they wont allow any civilian carriers to fly in or out of the UK with this system.

Which pretty much screws ryanair.

Couple of points, your face would be awful close to the seat back in front of you if you do happen to be in for some serious turbulence or bumps, even non emergency events could have you "simulate" a face plant.

Secondly, at the British Midland crash in the mid eighties in northern england (Kegworth??), a common occurrence was sitting passengers legs flailing forward on impact and being broken on the seat in front. Seems that would be more pronounced if your standing. Also, the passengers on that flight who were able to fold down the seat in front (if it was empty) were more likely to survive, others suffered serious head injuries or were killed outright by hitting the seatback in front.

It might just be me but... I think skateboarders, BMX Bikers and any extreme sport where they have to push the boundaries shouldn't be considered a "Fail" Their are just trying out bigger and better new tricks. To me a "Fail" is when people are attempting stupid ideas that don't pan out well, an easy task backfires, or when something bizarre happens out of the ordinary.

How about fail for not one of them wearing a helmet while doing something guaranteed to eventually result in head injury? Or just for doing pointlessly dangerous shit in the first place.

Haha, I agree with the lack of helmet being worn should be a Fail!

Fat Black Girl Falls off Swing (loses weave in process)

I can't laugh at this. Her head hit the ground with tremendous force (hence the lost weave). Considering the momentum generated by her above average mass, that is very likely a concussion. Head injuries are no joke; ask Natasha Richardson's family.
It's ok Ark, I'll laugh for both of us.

Police Brutality in Victoria, BC.

Payback says...

Victoria police issued a statement about the incident on Tuesday.

"At around 12:30 a.m. three officers on foot patrol witnessed a fight involving eight males and saw a victim of an assault lying on the ground being kicked in the head by a suspect," the statement reads. "The officers eventually wrestled six people into custody."

"The victim found lying on the ground was rushed to hospital with a head injury, he was treated and released and is refusing to cooperate with police. The combatants were all released without charges approximately 45 minutes later."

One of the field goal attempts, Harpinder Kang, plans to sue the police. Unfortunately for him, Canadian courts don't work the way they do in the States.

When movies are watched backwards (Cinema Talk Post)

choggie says...

If you watch Memento backwards it's about a murderer with a head injury, who quits his job as an insurance investigator to get cash from the trunk of the guy he kills in order to hold up in hotels taking Polaroid pictures and removing his crappy tattoos, who with the help of an ex-cop, finally remembers where he used to live with his wife, who has been looking for him for months.

Train Suicide Fail (And that's a good thing)

demon_ix says...

Well, I looked it up a bit deeper. It seems she is a 56 year old who just lost her job.

After the incident, the police looked around for her, and located her car with her inside suffering from a medium head injury, and brought her to a hospital.
They're convinced it's a suicide attempt, they just don't know why yet.
