I live in Japan and if I were to dive under my desk every time there was an earthquake, I'd be under there at least 3 times a day. Since the 2011 earthquake we've had constant aftershocks, some as strong as 5 and 6 on the Richter scale (which makes the panic seen over California's most recent quake somewhat amusing).

ChaosEngine is correct, you can gauge how bad the earthquake is by the amount of shaking. On March 3rd, 2011--the only time I have actually dived under a table during an earthquake--plates were flying off my kitchen shelves and shattering on the floor.

That said, Japan is a country that is truly prepared for quakes. Any big items you buy like refrigerators or big screen TVs usually come with fasteners to bolt them down so they don't fall over during a quake. The buildings here are incredibly well-engineered to survive a severe quake--very few people during the 3.11 quake were killed by collapsing structures.

Most other countries aren't that prepared. If I were vacationing in a developing country and a quake struck I would probably get the hell out of the building as soon as possible regardless of if it seemed small because I wouldn't trust the engineering to be as sound as it is here.

My comment, in short, tried to encourage anyone wanting to promote this message to promote it in a way that is understandable and unambiguous, and to learn lessons from those times when your attempt is ineffectual. Well, it wasn't presented unambiguously and that is why people are still discussing it. It's very wrong of you to accuse me of being sexist just because i didn't get the message. It's counter-productive to feminism, in fact, to do that. By folding your arms and saying "huh, you understand it - you're being like all those other men", you're being sexist yourself by definition.

I looked into it, and here's the reason why we seem to disagree and why i seem to be acting sexist in your eyes: I read the title of the video and watched it asking myself this question: "In what way is it sexist to tell someone to smile?" My conclusion was that it wasn't, and so the video was crap. I didn't even give it the full duration - long enough to gauge whether or not i agreed that it was sexist to say "smile!" to someone. That's not true. You can't indiscriminately speed around - we all abide by the rules and use the roads assuming that other people are also using the rules, i.e. drive on the left, give way to your right on roundabouts, drive at 30mph in residential areas. We gauge our ability to leave a junction safely (amongst other things) on the idea that people abide by the speed limit (and other rules), and it isn't the turning driver's fault the lambo driver was driving dangerously. Those kinds of cars don't skimp on the breaks either - if she wasn't able to stop she wasn't driving appropriately. You can hear how fast the car is moving and listen to when the vehicle starts to slow, i don't even think she reacted quickly enough because the obstacle was well into the road before the change in speed.

If this was Britain (the shop names don't look it but the registration plates kinda do, also driving on the left and black-taxis) then i expect the speedlimit in that sort of area to be at or below 20 which is standard these days.

With regards to "Not sure if I'd be amused or annoyed." --

High-beam flashing isn't as annoying in a truck as it is in a car. For a few reasons: you're higher so the angle doesn't hit you as much (especially if you are in a cab-over truck), you don't have a rear-view so you'll only get reflections from side views instead of being blinded by the large rearview, and also the signals are frequently used for helpful/constructive purposes between truckers.

I drove a truck for my family farm operations a bit back when I was living in the US, and it was quite common to flash the high-beams to another truck overtaking/passing you when they had enough room to get back in the lane. Pretty handy/nice thing to do since most cars want to be going faster than you and it is somewhat difficult to gauge the earliest safe time that you can merge back into the slower lane in a sideview mirror looking back at a long trailer (or trailers).

not really, I don't like my meat processed and chemically treated. I hunt deer, squirrel, rabbit, I grow and hunt quail, ducks, geese, chickens, I also hunt alligator since it's open season year around here due to overpopulation.

I have a chest freezer in the utility room with Elk, Mule Deer, Venison, Lamb as I can. We save thousands of dollars a year on meat since I hunt and have taught my son and daughter to hunt. My daughter is 13 and has already killed her first deer last season. My claim is that God is the source of morality. He gave us commands as to what we should or shouldn't do, and that is what is constituted as moral or immoral. It is also important to note that it stands apart from all human opinion as to what it should or shouldn't be.

Your question essentially is, how is Gods command to wipe out the Canaanite civilization, including the children, not inconsistent with His nature. Well, you could ask the same question about Sodom and Gomorrah, or Tyre, and other cities that God wiped out because of their disobedience. You could ask the same question about the flood which wiped out everyone in the world, men women and children except 8 people. The real question is, is it a crime for God to take life? If it is not a crime, it is not inconsistent with His nature.

The first thing to consider is that God is the giver and sustainer of all life. He does not make any guarantees concerning this, whether it be the amount of time lived or the quality of the life; life is a gift from Him and He determines when it begins and when it ends. He doesn't owe us anything. This is what Job realized when he said "the Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord"

If you were to create a sentient robot, would it be a crime for you to shut it off? Well, God doesn't shut anyone off, but He does bring them into judgment. Every day 100,000 people die and all of them are headed for Gods judgment. Why He chose to end their lives at that particular time, I couldn't tell you. What I can tell you is that it is His prerogative.

Even still, the judgment of God doesn't fall for no reason. God judges us because we are sinners. The moment any person commits a sin they are under judgment and facing eternal punishment unless they have their sins forgiven through Jesus Christ. Whichever lives God took which were morally accountable to Him was just; it is only Gods mercy that He allows someone to the time to repent after they have sinned.

Now, even young children have sinned, but they are not morally accountable to God until they have reached a certain level of comprehension. However, whether they are morally accountable or not, or whether they have committed a crime or not, it is still Gods prerogative to take their life. Some children are born stillborn; why does God choose to take their life at that point? I couldn't tell you that, but I know that God has reasons for doing so.

We aren't always privy to those reasons. What we do know about Canaan is that He gave them 400 years to repent. The children who died which were morally accountable, if any, had a fair chance at receiving eternal life. Those who were not morally accountable will go to Heaven automatically. The conditions of this world are only temporary; the only way to gauge fairness is from the eternal perspective, and whether those involved had a chance to partake in eternal life or not.

Therefore from all of this I can conclude that it is not a crime for God to take life, and therefore His actions against the Canaanite civilization were not inconsistent with His nature.
