Let's Play Earthbound Episode 3

Posting your own vids is highly frowned upon here FYI. If you are serious about being part of the community I can post this for you but if you're only self promoting please don't bother.

Exploring Korea's Illegal Tattooing Scene

Asmo says...

I respect peoples rights to do whatever the hell they want as long as it harms no one else. But to me, she seems intent on rubbing peoples faces in her modifications/tats rather than as a form of self expression.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but as per your point, she skips the entire cultural reason why tats are frowned upon in general, and there doesn't seem to be any investigation as to why the law says doctors are okay to perform tats but artists are not (guessing it's a thin justification along the lines of a health issue to make it essentially completely illegal).

It's also interesting that they never once mentioned the link between organised crime and tattoos that make the older Koreans wary of them.

The Mosquito Killer Billboard

AeroMechanical says...

I'm fairly certain that attempting to kill the adult mosquitos (short of major DDT fumigating, which is frowned upon except in extreme situations) isn't considered very effective. It's the larvae you need to get, mostly by cleaning urban areas of old tires and other places where water collects unnecessarily.

Keanu Reeves Gun Practice

AeroMechanical says...

I like that little extra shell-ring thingy he's got on the shotgun you can see him using to reload right before the slow motion bit. I've never seen one of those before and at first I thought he was pushing a mis-fired shell back into the chamber (or whatever you call it in a shotgun, the breach?), which asking about was the reason I started this comment until I watched it a third time.

I've never fired a semi-automatic shotgun (or any kind of shotgun since I was 15 or so) but I do recall a 12-gauge having a not insignificant amount of recoil, and I've heard from a SWAT guy that semi-automatic shotguns are frowned upon because people in panic-firefight-mode tend to pull the trigger too fast and end up shooting the ceiling. He seems to have no problem though.

X-Men Apocalypse Trailer

AeroMechanical says...

Looks like they just need to get Carter to reverse the polarity on the Stargate. Just swap the red crystal with the blue crystal and reverse the orientation of the thing that looks like a plexiglass plate with some notches cut into it. To be safe, use the phrase "quantum field" in every other sentence and occasionally frown at your multimeter that isn't connected to anything. There you go. Problem solved.

Volkswagen - Words of the World --- history of the VW

radx says...

The article linked above mentions Röpke and Eucken as champions of free market capitalism, so to speak. Ironically, Bernie Sanders is quite in line with many of Walter Eucken's core ideas. For instance, Eucken declared legal responsibility to be an absolute necessity for competition within a market economy. Meaning that under Eucken's notion of capitalism, US prisons would be filled to the brim with white collar criminals from Wall Street and just about every multinational corporation, including Volkswagen.

Ludwig Erhard, credited by many to be the main figure behind the German "Wirtschaftswunder" (nothing wonderous about it), postulated real wage growth in line with productivity and target inflation as an imperative for a working social market economy. Again, very much in line with Bernie Sanders. Maybe even to the left of Sanders. A 5% increase in productivity and a target inflation of 2% requires a wage increase of 7%, otherwise your economy will starve itself of the demand it requires to absorb its increased production. You can steal it from foreign countries, like Germany's been doing for more than a decade now, but that kind of parasitic behaviour is generally frowned upon. Minimum wage in the US according to Erhard would be what now, $25-$30? So much for Sanders' $15...

Sennholz further mentions the CDU as a counterweight to the SPD. Well, the CDU's "Ahlener Programm" in 1947 declared that both marxism and capitalism failed the German people. In fact, it put significant blame for Germany's descent into fascism at the feet of the capitalistic system and called for a complete restart with focus NOT on the pursuit of profit and power, but the well-being of the people. They called for socialism with Christian responsibility, later watered down and known as social market economy or Rhine capitalism.

As for the economic policies conducted by the occupation forces: German industry, and large corporations in particular, were shackled for the role they played during the war. If you work tens of thousands of slaves to their death, you lose your right to... well, anything. If they had stripped IG Farben, Krupp and the likes down to the very bone, nobody could have complained. No economic liberties for the suppliers behind a genocide.

Next in line, the comparison with Germany's European neighbours. Sennholz wrote that piece in '55, so you can't really blame him for it. Italy had more growth from '58 onwards, France had more growth than its devastated neighbour from '62 onwards. The third Axis power, Japan, had significantly more growth from '58 onwards.

Why did some European and Asian countries grew much more rapidly than the US? Fair Deal? Nope, Bretton-Woods. Semi-fixed exchange rates caused the Deutsche Mark and the Yen to be ridiculously undervalued compared to the Dollar, thus increasing German and Japanese competitiveness at the cost of the US. Stable trade relations created by the semi-fixed exchange rates plus the highly expansive monetary policy in the US – that's what boosted Germany's economy most of all. Sort of like China over the last two decades, except we were needed as a bulwark against the evil, evil Commies, so the US kept going full throttle.

Our glorious policians tried the same policies (Adenauer/Erhard) in East Germany after reunification, even though global conditions were vastly different, and the result is the mess we now have over there. The entire industry was burned to the ground when they set the exchange rate too high, thus completely destroying what little competitiveness remained. Two trillion DM later, still no improvement. A job well done, truly.

Anyway, if anything, Bernie Sanders' program is closer to post-war German social market economic principles than to the East-German bastard of socialism, state capitalism and planned economy imposed by an autocratic system. However, even that messed up system produced significantly less poverty, both in quality and quantity, than the current US corporatocracy. No homelessness, no starvation, proper healthcare for everyone – reality in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). And despite the fact that they were used as cheap labour for western corporations, no less. My first Ikea shelf was produced by our oppressed brothers and sisters in the East. The Wall "protected" the West from cheap labour while letting goods pass right through – splendid membrane, that one.

PS: Since that article was written in '55, I have to mention one of my city's most famous citizens: Otto Brenner. He was elected head of the IG Metal, this country's most influential trade union, in 1956 after having shared the office since 1952. The policies he fought for, and pushed through, during his 16 years in charge of the union are very much in line with what Sanders is campaigning for.

Real Time with Bill Maher: Christianity Under Attack?

JustSaying says...

If men of GOD trip and fall, they're usually landing penis first in other men or children.
I loathe gay clergy not for staying in their closet of self-hatred, I loathe them for actively speaking out against their own nature and therefore making it harder for those who chose not to be liars.
I chose to discard the bible because of the immoral, unethical, cruel and simply made up stuff that's written in it. That should be reason enough.
I detest christian churches for supporting pedophilia and actively covering up pedophile's crimes while having the gall to tell me what I should or should not do sexually. I detest them for claiming the authority to make up rules of morality when they refuse to obey the rule of law and human decency. The Duggars are just a recent example of that.
The reason society won't allow sexual relationships with children is simply because we recognise that children aren't able to make informed choices regarding sexual consent. That's why the world frowned on Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchinson, because everyone knew it was a shitty idea made by weird, creepy people.
Consent is something grown ups can give. And millions of gay men do it all the time, without your approval or not. All they want is equal treatment.
If pedophiles wanted that (and they did try in the past), we tell them to go fuck themselves because the people they want to, are simply too young to make that choice. There's a legal limit for drinking, driving and fucking and it's there for a reason.
If they claim "I was born this way!", which they often are, we tell them we have therapies for that. They don't go there because their sexuality is weird, out of the norm or gross, it's because it always hurts the other people involved. Always.

You are the one ranting "But what if you take away the rule book?! Goats will rape our children!" You seem to be the one worried that all goes Mad Max if we're not threatened with eternal damnation anymore.
I for one are not worried any place turns into Sodom and Gomorrah. You want to know why? Because I have all those gay, lesbian and transgender people to remind me that everybody deserves respect. They can walk up to me and start a conversation and don't have to worry I will yell "Abomination!" and start throwing my own poop.
Maybe I can learn something from their expirience. Maybe even somebody like you could. I hope somebody you truly love turns out to be gay, it would be quite educational for you to know what they know.
And you're right, I don't know anybody called Jack. I can only offer a Johannes but he was an idiot.

To A Childs Delight, George Lucas Says Jedis Can Get Married

newtboy says...

They went over this in Episode 3 quite a lot. It was the reason Anakin turned to the dark side...the fear of the loss of his love. It may not be explicitly forbidden, but it's certainly discouraged and frowned upon. While telling the child he could get married as a Jedi was a sweet thought, it's not really being honest.

I found it insane that 'low income' was anyone making under $72K per year!
It really does sound like the housing project is a slap back at his neighbors for not letting him expand his studio. Where his ranch is, there are no services, no stores, and probably no busses. I went there in the early 90's, and it was not near town at all. Today it's nearly a gated community in the hills with multi to hundreds of million dollar homes. It's a nice thought, and I hope it does help some people who are struggling, but purchasing land in or near town to build it really seems more reasonable and helpful to those really in need, like people living on or near minimum wage in the bay area. Those people won't be able to live in these low income homes, because they won't be able to get to work reasonably from there unless they're doing something about that problem too.

Wow, this George guy is pretty cool when he's not ruining my childhood!

Here's other cool things he's been doing with his spare time now that he isn't writing and directing what would certainly be crappy sequels to the Star Wars franchise.

Lifesize Human Foosball

AeroMechanical says...

I used to like foosball until in college where I had to play against the German students. They were serious and had rules and stuff. You weren't supposed to spin the little men all the way around, which was really hard to come to grips with. Also, trying to jab your opponent in the nuts with the other end of the bars was frowned upon. It took all the drunk-strategy out of the game, IMO.

judge dredd-interrogation scene

Payback says...

I like Carl Urban. Damn good Dredd frown. He also had the balls to never take the helmet off. You just know Stallone demanded to have his face seen.

Lena Headey was spectacular in it as well. Was amazed at her makeup. Thought they cast someone with massive scars until I realized who it was.

Africans Don't Like African-Americans

poolcleaner says...

I have a friend that claims Jamaican American but everyone just laughs at him or rolls their eyes like "mother fucker thinks he's special". So Africans hate African Americans and African Americans hate Jamaican Americans. Who do Jamaican Americans hate? Themselves?

I just refer to him as black. I'm white. He's black. Fuck all that see that as negative.

Life can be rough and if you believe you're above racism then all you really need to do is laugh at race issues, because it's all stupid shit. Whether you ARE a racist, or an insecure person unable to deal with racism towards you, or an insecure white person feeling the loss of white right, or an OCD know-it-all that likes to point out the flaws on either side of the racial fence -- it's all stupid, and you're stupid.

All I can do is laugh nowadays. I used to get mad, because occasionally, being in a permanent (marriage) interracial relationship, I'd get blasted by other white people as a "race traitor" or frowned at by people of my woman's race, but now I just laugh it off, or give a polite smile, if I'm feeling the burn.

So, without further ado -- Hahaha! Laughter is the best FUCK YOU in the racial playbook.

Indeed Yogi, the term African American should refer to anyone who can claim total or partial ancestry from any of the native populations of Sub-Saharan Africa. I believe there's already terminology which everybody can feel comfortable with, with which to refer to, 'everyone'.

If you wanna blame someone for for having to hear the term, blame Jesse Fucking Jackson. You wanna blame someone for the word nigger or negro, it's time to start pointing fingers at the fucking Spaniards, and we have only pussies and assholes to blame for political correctness.
