Neko Case - 'Behind the House' - on Austin City Limits

MacGyver Tornado Punch (3 seconds)

A Flood collapses road in a few minutes

Asmo says...

Seeing the initial suction that underway was generating, it's easy to understand why so many people drown in floods. Over here in North Queensland, we have large stormwater run offs for cyclone season, and more than a few people who go "play" in the run off end up dead because they misjudge the force of water...

Cool to watch, but it would suck to be in it...

Fake niggaz get blitzed
and mic bites I swing swords and cut clowns
Shit is too swift to bite you record and write it down
I flow like the blood on a murder scene, like a syringe
on some loud howl shit, to insert a fiend
But it was yo ock, the shop stolen heart
Catch a swollen heart from not rollin smart
I put mad pressure, on phony wack rhymes that get hurt
Shit's played, like zodiac signs on sweatshirt
That's minimum, and feminine like sandals
My minimum table stacks a verse on a gamble
Energy is felt once the cards are dealt
With the impact of roundhouse kicks from black belts
that attack, the mic-fones like cyclones or typhoon
I represent from midnight to high noon
I don't waste ink, nigga I think
I drop megaton BOMBS more faster than you blink
Cause rhyme thoughts travel at a tremendous speed
Clouds of smoke, of natural blends of weed
Only under one circumstance is if I'm blunted
Turn that shit up, my clan in da front want it

I'm on a Mission, that niggaz say is Impossible
But when I swing my swords they all choppable
I be the body dropper, the heartbeat stopper
Child educator, plus head amputator
Cause niggaz styles are old like Mark 5 sneakers
Lyrics are weak, like clock radio speakers
Don't even stop in my station and attack
while your plan failed, hit the rail, like Amtrak
What the fuck for? Down by law, I make law
I be justice, I sentence that ass two to four
round the clock, that state pen time check it
With the pens I be stickin but you can't stick to crime
Came through with the Wu, slid off on the DL
I'm low-key like seashells, I rock these bells
Now come aboard, it's Medina bound
Into the chamber, and it's a whole different sound
It's a wide entrance, small exit like a funnel
So deep it's picked up on radios in tunnels
Niggaz are fascinated how the shit begin
Get vaccinated, my logo is branded in your skin

Bill Maher -- Terrorism Versus Liberty -- Sept. 19, 2008

I think she said we have more hurricaines due to "warming ocean temperatures" not "global warming."

And there seems to be some support for that claim:

...2005 was the most active hurricane season on record, and Atlantic water temperatures were the warmest, about 1.4 degrees above normal. That hurricane season set a new high with 28 storms and 13 hurricanes. Seven of the hurricanes were major storms.

In 1971, when the water temperatures were the coolest, there were 13 storms and six hurricanes, including one major one.

The index of overall hurricane activity was more than twice as high in 2005 as it was in 1971.

The scientists who have linked global warming to stronger storms said the study makes sense, and is, if anything, just repeating and refining what they have already said.

USAToday.com

Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones have always bedeviled coasts, but global warming may be making matters worse. Sea level is rising and will continue to rise as oceans warm and glaciers melt. Rising sea level means higher storm surges, even from relatively minor storms, which increases coastal flooding and subsequent storm damage along coasts. In addition, the associated heavy rains can extend hundreds of miles inland, further increasing the risk of flooding.

Check out the BSG miniseries first. If you like it, check out the whole series. In the first part of the 3rd season, they riff on the Iraq occupation, with the Cyclons as Americans and the humans as 'Iraqi's/Insurgents'. It's smart and edgy and all that, you'd both dig it.

I dug both Iron Man and Batman. Apples and oranges, tho.

I just updated my Al Jazeera post and added all Al Jazeera reports on Myanmar/Nargis:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Cyclone-batters-Myanmars-main-city-Yangon-4th-of-May-2008

BTW I generally have mixed happy/sad feelings about flowers that are cut off from their roots, especially when falling from the sky..

edit:
I just found out Nargis means Daffodil, from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Nargis
"The cyclone name "Nargis" (نرگس, IPA: næɵr-ɡɵs), is an Urdu word meaning daffodil"
Was this known by the ones who made this clip?

Village at the Heart of Myanmar Cyclone Catastrophe

RhesusMonk says...

>> ^Zeph:
Most of the deaths will not be caused by the cyclone, but by the Junta's complete lack of action.

I understand what you're saying here, but this is a slippery slope. When we blame one another for lack of action during catastrophes (whatever the scale) we are simply taking the focus off the helplessness of our species in the face of certain circumstances. This need to blame is as much a destructive by-product of conflated human tendencies as is religious fervor. In this case, the deaths resulting from a "lack of action" by whomever would happen with or without that lack of action; they are still a result of the event's impact.
