Steve Jobs announces the iPad

budzos says...

I wonder if this could make a good substitute for a cintiq? It lacks pressure sensitivity, but aside from that... and if it accepts USB peripherals (does it?) then a pressure sensitive stylus could be employed. Boom, you got a Cintiq that's lighter, sturdier, more portable.

Hell, even if it doesn't accept USB peripherals, it could interface with a pressure sensitive stylus over Wi-Fi or bluetooth, the way AirMouse2 does.

Airport Wants to See You Naked

spoco, I'm guessing it uses terahertz radiation, which lies between the radio and infrared bands. The power levels involved are probably in the 1-10 watt range, and terahertz radiation isn't ionizing like X-rays, so I'd say the risk involved is probably rather low, even after multiple exposures. Rather on the level of talking on a cell phone or wearing a Bluetooth headset.

Cutting Edge Prosthetic Arms (no pun intended)

looris says...

this is great, but I think of the problems such an interface may cause when interacting with... the evil rest of the world.

such as electronic jamming or - in case they for some reason decide to insert some wireless technology into it - hackers.
hey I've got a bluetooth arm! ffs why is it punching me! stop, arm, stop!
lol it's like Neuromancer meets The Army of Darkness.

Why buying a Mac is simply fucking rediculous. (Blog Entry by MarineGunrock)

fford says...

That comparison is total bullshit.

Memory
Mac: DDR3
HP: DDR2

Video Resolution
Mac: 1440x900
HP: 1366x768

Bluetooth
Mac: included
HP: +$25

Battery Life
Mac: 5+ hours
HP: < 3 hours

Case Construction:
Mac: unibody aluminum
HP: plastic crap

And that's just off the top of my head.

Agreed, the video is quite goofy...but have you tried it Razor? Before you go assuming this is a parody, using cell phones wrapped in ethernet cable and other things are actually quite workable.

I haven't tried this method...but it probably does work.

Since the RJ-45 ethernet port on a computer does not act as an antenna for the Wi-Fi circuitry it would never work. For this to be remotely plausible some wiring would have to be connected to the Wi-Fi antenna.

Additionally, cell phones do not use protocols used by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The cell phone would never show up with it's name in the networking control panel applets. A user, however, may be tricked into believing this if their phone's Bluetooth is enabled, as that usually displays their cell phone model's name.

A watched a few more of this guy's videos, and they are all just geek jokes. It's along the lines of the BOFH style of comedy, taking advantage of social engineering =P

Dag's Future Job

"Aha, aha, keep talking. I'm so boooooooored. How did I get this assignment? Is he still talking? Why is he still talking? Who cares about computers with no wi-fi or bluetooth? I bet you can't even log on twitter from that punchcard crap. If he stops talking in the next few minutes I could still get home in time for American Idol. Is he still talking? AAAAAAHHHFHAHHRHHGJGJHDGSJKTWED".

Brief reporter state of mind approximation, done by me, with no idea who she is, what her name is, or what her interests are. Apologies in advance to any female sifters offended.

Looking forward to the new iPhone 3GS (Blog Entry by dag)

xxovercastxx says...

The iPhone deal breakers for me are, first and foremost, the "you can run anything you want as long as we say it's ok" approach to apps. This idea among so many manufacturers that when you buy their product, it does not become yours needs to stop. Hiring a bunch of nuns to decide what software I can use on my phone is inexcusable.

That they totally butchered their bluetooth implementation so it only supports headsets (no file transfer, contact sharing, etc) annoyed me too.

After considering the iPhone last year, I went for the Blackberry Bold. (I'm also a fan of having a keyboard I can actually feel.) It was definitely the best choice at the time, though I suspect my next phone will be android-based.

My now almost 3-year old Hewlett Packard IpaQ has admirably performed every one of those 'pros' you mentioned since day one - except for the VS 4.0 integration, of course. Didn't ever need a patch or anything, could always copy and paste, had both button and on-touch-screen keyboards, took pics and video, as well as played back various video and audio formats on Windows Mobile (I used to watch episodes of TV shows I download legally obtained via the internets when commuting as well as frequently listened to streaming internet radio).

Not to mention it had Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, EDGE&3G, a memory-card slot, MS Office apps and powerpoint capability, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum. Hell, I even installed and successfully played the first Age of Empires game (originally for Win95) on it. AND, at time of purchase it cost fairly less than iPhone did when it was first introduced here.

Which is why I'm still maintaining (and probably always will be) that iPhone sucks much balls.

Ingenious iphone app: Bump!

Ingenious? This is a bluetooth contact transfer combined with a meathead greeting. Oh and let's transfer your information over the internet through the cloud so that hundreds of thousands of other people can get a crack at it, too.

Unveiling The Sixth Sense - TED Talk

dan00108 says...

Do you guys really consider this to be a sixth sense device? It looks to me like a projector, cellphone and camera strapped together around your neck. And walking around making weird gestures are in the same category to me as talking to a bluetooth wireless headset, and could probably get you killed.

Palm Pre - iPhone killer announced at CES 2009

alizarin says...

>> ^EDD:
Anybody that hasn't realized iPhone's success is only a matter of branding and thinks iPhone is technologically superior than any other average smartphone in the market needs their brain examined.

Allot of things about the iphone suck - including obnoxious marketing and intentional handicaps BUT until very recently it is definitely not like any other average smartphone.

The big difference is high resolution screen and touchscreen. Without those things you don't have a real full fledged usable web browser, the ability to intelligently zoom in on areas of interest or usable google maps. The average smartphone has a resolution of 320x240 with a very very crude web browser and not enough resolution to make navigation very practical IME.

Beyond that yeah it's the same old stuff and in many cases not done as well as the average smart phone - but a usable web browser and navigation are really important to most people.

I hope future android phones or the palm don't cripple things like disallowing stereo bluetooth and allowing alternate media players etc like the iphone and apparently the g1 do.
