Desmond Tutu Decries Culture of Competition

vairetube says...

>> ^quantumushroom:
"The most awful thing to happen to anybody is to fail."
WRONG. The most awful thing to happen to anybody is to fail and not try again.

Way to go Dwight Schrute. You totally took that out of context. It was not a statement in and of itself, it was in reference to a viewpoint based on a particular attitude.

the quote is this, pay attention to punctuation:

"In our culture, in our modern culture, we set (high ??) by success; [whereby] the most awful thing thing to have happen to anybody is to fail... And so we worship in the temple of cuttthroat competition."

So even though i can't literally understand what he is saying, the quote is still in context now as a statement. Perhaps someone can fill in the blank. In your head.

Plus even out of context.. it depends on your definition of fail. If you define it as to "stop operating or functioning", than it fulfills your criteria:: that the removing of the ability to exist in a state capable of continuating/operating towards a goal is 'the most awful thing to happen to anybody'

But even there you're wrong. I think torturous pain is about the worst thing. This is some good shit.

Progressive Pastor Talks About Masturbation

Hyperdrive says...

I quite fancy dipping my toes into religion.

It must be so much simpler, to live life according to the fables of an old book, interpreted through the eyes of another man. What a relief to offload all the hassle of making a judgement on issues such as morality. I guess it's a bit like letting your partner pick out your clothes for the morning, as long as they don't end up sending you off to work in neon cycling shorts and a tutu you can just be happy to have one less thing to think about.

So until a god finally decides to reveal themselves to me, a religion which is cool with masturbation is a real winner. I hope in the charasmatic pastors next clip he can share his views on the bibles scriptures concerning the treatment of slaves. I never know what to do when they become uppity.

... to be honest I don't even know what I'm talking about. Long week I guess.

Sorry, not getting what you're saying here. Obama is interested in addressing Native American issues because he was friends with Hawaiian people?

In reply to this comment by bamdrew:
So I was just reading this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/24/us/politics/24cnd-obama.html) where it mentions he calls his grandma 'Toot' from the hawaiian 'Tutu' for grandmother, and it occurred to me he most likely had any number of friends of native Hawaiian descent when he was growing up there.

...yeah ... just something that occurred to me.

It blows my mind that while other campaigns are out there doing the usual smear bullshit, Obama continues to address issues that matter to people, even us forgotten few. I can't get over this. 8 years will not be enough for this man.

Miles Davis - Tutu

I think that's Kenny Garrett with a flute, Foley (Joe McCreary) on guitar, David Sanborn on sax...

Methinks you're right. As well as Don Alias on percussion, I believe. If I'm not mistaken, this is taken from David Sanborn's earlier TV show called Night Music. He had a lot of prominent guests on his program, but I didn't know he managed to get Miles himself in there.

Funny thing about the Christian bible is, it doesn't ask me to go out and lay waste to the 'infidels' or beat my wife, or anything of the sort.

But it doesn't say those things, thats a common misconception, the Qu'ran was written as book of religion, of law and of warfare, because the Prophet was not only someone of faith but also a warrior and a statesman. Further more there is plenty in the Christian bible that is also cruel and archaic anyway as well so. It does contain passages on conduct of warfare, that does not allow killing of innocents, women and children that seeks to accept negotiation over war.

Of course extremists bypass this conveniently by saying infidels are "against" Islam, or rather are seeking to eliminate the faith and thus its okay to kill those who are not Muslim. But a closer examination shows that more Muslim people are killed by terrorist actions then anything else, major scholars of modern Islam have spoken against that and against Osama himself. The events of 9/11 brought more hardship and misery upon Muslim people then any western populace.

With regards to womens rights, you are diluting the issue again by thinking that Saudi Arabia which forces women to wear head covering is the example of what Islam is. That is nonsense, Saudi Arabia practices Wahhabi Islam, a extreme reading of Islam with various add on rules, people there in itself question that here is a video of a Saudi writer questioning this. The faith there has more to do with keeping political power then anything else. Frontline's documentary the House of Saud explains this issue very well.

The Wilder's assumption that Islam would destroy Europe is vapidly stupid, Europe was ruled by Islam already, another aspect covered in the Islamic History of Europe. Here is a quick clip that shows how the interchange of information from the Greeks to Muslims to Europeans lead to Renaissance. Also When the Moors Ruled Europe.

There is much more that is seen all over http://islam.videosift.com, the religion is not perfect but you need to look at it with a wider appreciation to History and actually understand it before claiming simplistic uninformed views from a few extremist talking heads. Start with What is Islam.

A good post dealing directly with Extremism is Doha Debates video. Where At the second Doha Debates Special on February 28th, 2006 guest speakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Professor John Esposito and Diana Buttu, answered questions from the student audience on the issue of how to combat extremism and improve relations between the West and the Muslim world.

"I stole from PetMart and got caught."

Trancecoach says...

I think this rationale should extend to other crimes as well. Shoplifters wear a sandwich board. Armed burglars need to confess in person wearing pink leotards on live television during football games. Bank robbers need to prepare a figure skating routine and wear a tutu. This could work!

A Gay Brigadier General Asks a question

dannym3141 says...

"Oh, and Danny, I don't care how disciplined I/you/they are. I'll/you'll/they'll be staring at an attractive naked woman in the shower."

Bull. I hope some MORE (thanks Skeeve) serving military members speak up about the professionalism issue and show that what you're saying is just plain wrong. You think everyone is incapable of controlling theirselves not to stare at people of their sexual preference in the shower? That's even more bigoted than your homophobia - if i enjoy eating "Marmite", and you don't, are you going to tell me that i'm obviously wrong and DON'T enjoy it too?

@Lurch - i think that, assuming openly homosexual men would get beaten for being homosexual, then this is an issue of professionalism and discipline wherever you are serving. I've never been in the military, so i'm not gonna say "this is how it should be", because everyone knows what should be and what is are often far apart. However i do know 1 gay dude in the military and when asked about it he just says that it's never been a problem. This is the British army, and i don't proclaim that all gays in the British army have an easy ride either. All i'm saying is, it's possible for people to be bonded and taught in such a way that they don't beat a guy up for being gay.

It's not like he runs around in a tutu and carries his gun with a limp wrist, is it? Or his uniform has a rainbow flag on the arm. No one bothers pushing him on the issue, and just like someone who practised, say BDSM, he doesn't consider himself special or different, and he doesn't march around going "HELLO I'M GAY!!!" (or hello i like BDSM). He's just a guy among guys.

And he doesn't stare at people in the shower. If that's ok with MarinegunRock.
