Rape in Comedy: Why it can be an exception (Femme Talk Post)

hpqp says...

Damn, I forgot to tick the "email me when comments" box and missed out on half the discussion I started

One strawman needs to be definitely burnt right now, and it's the whole "offended" thing: nowhere did I argue that a comedian (or anyone) has no right to be offensive, and @Ryjkyj is right to say that everything is offensive to someone. I agree with Steve Hughes about offensiveness. Another strawman is the whole "waaah you're attacking my free speech!" clause that is often bandied about by those who have the worst things to say (e.g. WBC or the MRA-holes on the web). Nobody's saying you shouldn't be allowed to say horrible and/or offensive things, but you should be condemned (morally and socially, not legally) for doing so, especially when what you say borders on threatening (just as an aside, @shuac, for all your 1st amendment wonderfulness in the US I'm pretty sure there are exceptions, e.g. threatening someone or, you know, yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre ).
I agree that heckling is a huge no-no, and I agree that Tosh had the right (nay, obligation) to shut her up, but the way he did it seems to say something pretty terrible about his mindset. Had it been Louis CK on stage he probably would've retorted with a hilarious rape joke, proving the woman wrong without resorting to base intimidation.

(As for the term "rape culture", it is a controversial concept in feminism that I only partly agree with; it would be more accurate to call it "violence against women culture", but you can see why they chose the short and shocking title.)

What Was That Black Goo? (Prometheus)

cinema
I still need to see the movie, but waiting for home release. Speaking of home release, the movie will have about 30 minutes more that wasn't shown in the theater.

Despite all that's hideously wrong with it, I'd highly recommend going to the theatre to see it to fully appreciate how visually stunning this movie is

I still have yet seen The Avengers movie which I want to see more, but others and I are too BUSY these days.

Oh, go see Avengers! Do it! Do it now!

Can't. Want to do my work or come with me whenever I am free?

New Video Game Movie - Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

I'm looking forward to this so much I'm trying not to watch the trailer. I can imagine this one being tremendously irritating to watch in theatres, since the know-it-all factor of people needing to call out the name of things they recognize will be off the chain.

Saw this a few weeks ago. Might just be one of the best documentaries I've ever seen -- yes, it's that good. Even if you're not into videogames, you need to watch this film.

HotDocs? I saw it too, and agree 100%. One of the best - very well shot, well paced, great visual treatment, and super engaging.

Yep. I actually saw it via the satellite feed in a theatre in Etobicoke, and the massive thunderstorm that night caused the feed to cut out a couple of times, which sucked. I'll have to go watch it again now that it's playing at the Lightbox.

I think I've watched this at least a couple dozen times. If I could pay full price to just see this minute-and-a-half trailer in a theatre, and then go home, I'd happily do it.

Look, go back and re-read all your anti-Raid, anti-action arguments in that thread, and tell me that it was really a huge leap on my part to assume you were one of those pretentious hipster types who hangs out around art house theatres and looks his nose down on any movie that was made for more than a few million bucks. You're not, okay, but it wasn't much of a leap, is what I'm saying.

Careful, probie. Sarz might accuse you of wanting all TV shows to be about class warfare.>> ^probie:

I never got into Frasier. Frasier Crane was my favorite character on Cheers and the Frasier on Frasier was not the Frasier on Cheers.

As a fan of both Cheers and Frasier, I'm going to need you to elaborate on that one.

Sure. Cheers was very much a comedy of the classes; Frasier and Lilith typifying the upper class, white collar intellectuals. With Fraiser (the show), they got rid of the class element and focused more on the family dynamic between him, his brother, the father and the other characters. On Cheers, Fraiser was more akin to Il Dottore; professional, collected, pompous, arrogant at times...only Lilith was able to put him in his place. On Fraiser, because he was now the central character, he played foil to the rest of the supporting cast. While Grammar is still playing the same character, it's not the same Frasier (to me at least).

Inglorious Basterds Epic Bloopers - "Hi Sally!"

Quboid says...

Possibly not, he'd have to get more scars to hide it. When I say "an unrecognisable mess", I mean his swastika, not his whole face. He's not going to win any beauty contests but it's better than what would have happened to him if the Basterds hadn't intervened, getting blown up in a theatre or if he's lucky, spending his life running from Nazi hunters.

(What's up with quotes? Videosift seems to be mucking them up.)

>> ^alien_concept:

Were skin grafts that great back in the 40s? If he had to scar his whole face up, that'd still be terrible for a character like him

I watched this film again recently, having absolutely loved it the first time, and found myself enjoying it less than I expected. Mainly because of the excessive use of the 'person is dead / no they're not not they're really just pretending' trick, which I thought was a bit cheap. It happens at least twice at key points in the film (the woman in the bar fight scene, and then the German war hero in the cinema scene).
Don't get me wrong - Tarantino is a God, and the suspense he creates in scenes is brilliant, and the Jew Hunter was pure awesome - but there were a few bits that I found a bit cheap on second viewing. I don't think it hangs together as a film as well as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.
So there.

Spoilers
This bugged me but what really annoyed me is this: what did the Basterds actually achieve? The only difference they made to the big ending is that they helped the main baddie! Landa (Christoph Waltz, in a superb performance) to survived, and got a nice life in the U.S. because of them screwing up the assassination attempt, at the cost of some plastic surgery. They were counter productive!

Survive with a fat swastika on his head

That could be fixed with plastic surgery, or if that wasn't available, he could get more slices in his face to change it into an unrecognisable mess. Claim he was hit by shrapnel while saving children from Nazis.

I thought you might enjoy Soul Coughing Live at The 9:30 Club on 1998-10-25. It was found on a Soul Coughing YouTube upload description. I just did a search to see what was sifted of this awesome band and found out that you have 2 of their tunes sifted. *quality. I had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times. In a small bar with mainly neighborhood drunks for their "Ruby Vroom" tour. Then at some college they opened for Dave Mathews for their "Irresistible Bliss" album and blew them away. And on their last tour at a late 50's single screen theatre converted to a music venue with sweet acoustics supporting their "El Oso" album. The last show was by far the best. To me they were at their peak. It was a sad day when I found out they called it quits. i hope you enjoy this as much as I did. ;
