19 Facts About Playboy

I have a set of those "Femlin" figurines (those black and white drawings on the joke page) that my father-in-law bought back in the early 60s. A mint set was auctioned for $7000 but these are kind of battered. He kept them in a paper bag in the basement, grrrrrr. I will have to get them restored.

I just read Alan Rusbridger's comment on this mess and the following was more than I can take at 8am:

And so one of the more bizarre moments in the Guardian's long history occurred – with two GCHQ security experts overseeing the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents. "We can call off the black helicopters," joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro.

GCHQ thugs destroying Guardian property on Guardian premises -- I did not expect it to escalate this quickly. The fact that Rusbridger published it on the blog section of the Guardian indicates to me that some sort of gag order was placed on the Guardian and that he stepped up and did this at his own risk.

Makes you wonder what kinds of data Snowden liberated from the NSA: the recipe for soilent green?

Section 8 Rental - What a sad and upsetting experience

arekin says...

To be fair, that is called a bad tenant, not a bad program. Section 8 aids a lot of people with disabilities and our aging people on social security, and the majority of them are good tenants. Now having helped paint the campus area housing for the city in which I live, I can say that college students paying $1200 a month out of pocket managed to flood a basement with 5 feet of water without any obvious leaks in the home, presumably by running a hose into the basement and deliberately flooding it.

Moral here is that bad people do bad things.

Playstation 4 (Ps4) vs. Xbox One - Console Wars The Musical

VoodooV says...

To be fair, @TheFreak's argument is not completely invalid.

The question is, are PC's better, I think you and I would agree that yes they are. TheFreak's argument did nothing to disprove that, he merely argued that RL gets in the way as you just demonstrated.

Well no shit. I have a huge backlog of games thanks to steam sales and I'm seriously trying to figure out how to give more money to Star Citizen without breaking the bank. And yes, I have a life outside of gaming and a job that demands a lot of my time.

Still doesn't mean PC games aren't better. In the console world, I have to save every flipping console ever made and hope that they never break down. Oh yeah, and I have to re-buy games I've bought before when they re-release them on the new platform. (you've seen AVGN's basement right? ManCave aspect aside, that place is completely unrealistic to everyone else

PC's not so much, as long as the software exists and I have storage, I can play it. I'm not locked into hardware or some online service. I'm not at someone's mercy if the corporation shuts things down.

no shit they require a modest bit more effort and money. again, that doesn't disprove that PCs are better. Many things that are better require a bit more effort.

PCs = Requires updates (drivers), configurations, etc. Easy to break too. However, no modding and hacking on consoles.

However, I still prefer computer games over consoles. I just don't have time to deal with them! I am six days behind with Blue's News now.

Talented and funny kid magician..

Fletch says...

When I was a kid, I had an egg (and some coins, maybe; definitely remember the egg) pulled out of my ear when I was called up during a magic show in the basement of my church. He didn't say anything to coach me, or wink or anything. I was just a prop who stood there and had shit pulled out of his head. Nowadays, I do the same trick on myself. For free.

artician said:

Any sifters been called up on stage for a magic trick before? I only know of a few scarce people who have actually done it, and every time they were either expected to "play along" with a wink and a nod, or were told such under the breath of the performer as they got onto stage.
I think I've heard of people being coached beforehand to be picked from the crowd, but I can't remember if that was something I was told from an others empirical experience or something I read online once....

Candidate Obama vs President Obama on Government Surveillanc

radx says...

He certainly talked the talk, didn't he...

Then again, all this reminds me of the good old days (pre '68) when the Allied forces were still reading most of our (as in "German citizens'") mail and listening in to innumerable telephone calls, all by hand. Ahhh, those were the days...

To have all your communications analyzed and stored automatically by a bunch of algorithms running on a virtual machine in some remote basement is so awfully technocratic, don't you think? Desperatly needs a human touch.

On a more serious note: we've been fighting tooth and nail for almost a decade to get rid of telecom data retention over here, and to see the clandestine mirror image of it laid bare for all to see is... rejuvenating.

The Man will pay us a visit later this month. It'll be interesting to see if any of our officials have the balls to tell Obama how his NSA puts even the Stasi to shame, where surveillance is concerned.

Rape Joke Debate

bareboards2 says...

@eric579

Someone elsewhere wrote about murder -- how murder is everywhere.

So imagine you are in a dark basement of a comedy club, surrounded by people, some of whom you KNOW are unconvicted and uncaught sociopathic killing-for-fun murderers. Including the comic on the stage. A small percentage of those in the room, absolutely, but you don't know who is who.

And the comic makes a "joke" about those murderers coming for YOU. Not in a general sense. A very specific, you pissed off the comic, so let's target Eric. That guy right there. Who is going to have to walk to his car later. And who is going to drive home and could be followed by one or more of those murderers.

That is the "rape" joke that needs to be excised from our society. And that "rape" joke has been defended and defended and defended as "freedom of speech."

I'm all for freedom of speech. But as long as there are a significant number of men out there who laugh at that "joke", we have a serious problem. When the men in the room don't boo that comic, and instead laugh and then defend that comic, we have a problem.

And that is what this debate is about. Calling on all men to speak up when this kind of rape "joke" goes down.

I think.

Rape Joke Debate

Yogi says...

Well I was mostly only interested in Jim Norton because I'm a fan of his. I've come down on the side of too much freedom of speech is a good thing. I thought everything she said was incredibly valid, however some of it isn't provable. I'm not willing to give the state the power to regulate speech is all. I've heard Jim talk for hours and hours about freedom of speech and comics so I already knew where he was coming from and basically agreed.

That being said Jim is of course biased because his livelyhood is the one being affected. He gets threatened with losing his job on Sirius constantly, and he works with two people who did lose their job once or twice. I totally understand what he's coming from, I'm trying to understand where she's coming from but I think having a penis is blocking me mentally.

The bottom basement point is that this is all good. Not comics, but PEOPLE should understand certain things about the world and them finding out that women don't walk a darkened street feeling safe is illuminating.

Also you like Louis CK but think rape jokes aren't funny? He has like 3 that are great jokes and make you think. How he tells those jokes matter, and apparently he understands it better after having been raised by a mother, having 3 sisters and having 2 daughters.

bareboards2 said:

Ah. Interesting that the commenter above doesn't even bother to hear the other side before weighing in on who "wins."

*quality

Quality again. And more quality.

And I love Louis CK. I have never heard him tell a joke that was anything other than searingly honest and respectful.

Sorry about your loss. Losing your mom so young, in such a terrible way. And your friends seem to be living proof of the formula -- Comedy is Tragedy plus time.

Which speaks to why rape jokes aren't funny. The tragedy is NOW. The threat of violence towards women is on-going -- look at the burgeoning sexual assault crisis in the military. So there is no emotional distance from the events.
