Low-Fat Foods Are Making You Fatter - Adam Ruins Everything
Good point, I was too lazy to post the link, my bad. List of quotes from people who Gary has misrepresented: http://www.bodyforwife.com/an-open-letter-to-gary-taubes/
(for newtboy, notice how this is not a vegan website, nor are the people complaining about Gary Taubes vegan researchers)
Sugar consumption going down since the late 90s https://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/data-mine/2014/02/25/surprise-american-sugar-consumption-is-on-the-decline
Indeed this video is about sugar, but it's a common strategy to use sugar to demonise carbs(the only research you will ever find where "carbs" are bad for you, always use sugar of some type). Every single popular diet today uses this kind of shitty research to back up their diets. They're all variations of low-carb: atkins, paleo, keto, isogenics etc because this is what sells the most animal products, which is a far more lucrative industry than grains and beans. But possibly more importantly it doesn't work in the long run! So you have repeat customers. They lose weight quickly for 6 months, then in 12-18 months time they are heavier than how they started.
BTW this is vegan http://www.blogto.com/restaurants/doomies-toronto/
You don't have to eat healthy all the time once you are at a stable weight and your other biosigns are good, pig out every now and then .
Life won't be so short this way ;-) (on average 13 years longer)
They're talking about sugar, not carbs.
"Gary Taubes, who's made a living misrepresenting science."
How so? If you're going to make such a claim, back it up.
"Despite sugar consumption going down"
Really? I have yet to see any evidence that that's the case.
"Stuff your face with this food "
Eh, life is way too short to eat vegan food.
The LA Speed Check
Very well told... has a lilt and flow that reminds me of Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant story. Amazing bird.
Zombie Octopus Hates Soy Sauce
Would I eat that? Most likely I'd be running screaming away from the restaurant
Straight is the new gay - Steve Hughes
First, I'm not talking about smoking outdoors. The conversation specifically relates to pubs (and restaurants, I guess). If you want to smoke outdoors, it's not such a big deal.
Second, cars have utility. Whether you think more people should cycle or use public transport or whatever, you can't argue that banning cars wouldn't be a massive shock to the economy, and the way people live. Smoking? Not so much.
Finally, smoking tends to get it in the neck, because it's EASY to regulate. Regulating healthy food is a nightmare, considering there isn't even universal agreement on what constitutes a healthy diet. But there's no positive side to smoking, so it tends to get regulated.
I could use the same argument to try to outlaw cars.
When someone complains about smokers outdoors, I ask them if they drove there to complain, then offer a deal. They sit in their car with the exhaust plumbed into the window, I'll sit in a box smoking a fat cigar, last one breathing wins the debate.
Oddly, no one ever takes me up on that, but at least they all sheepishly drop their complaints.
As to banning it in private homes, this is a terribly slippery slope that gives power to others to decide what's dangerous to you....now consider getting too little sleep has proven to be harmful, so why not a legally enforced bed time based on the youngest or oldest person on your block? Your second hand noise might keep them up, harming them, so night night time is now 6pm. Consider all the food issues you mentioned as second hand groceries, because children have little option but to eat what parents supply, so no more sugar, salt, or processed foods in the stores because they might buy them.
The questions about health and safety vs freedom to be unhealthy are not simple ones to resolve, and it's impossible to fully safeguard both.
Why Do Americans Smile So Much?
I lived in Turkey for four years, and after a while I noticed that Turks didn't respond well to my smiling. They didn't understand it as a friendly signal, and it actually caused friction. I never asked about it, but I somehow caught on that they thought I was stupid. I thought about it, and it made perfect sense to me that it was stupid to smile at things that shouldn't make you happy.
So I stopped smiling in stores and restaurants, with coworkers, and even with Turkish friends. My interactions with people improved noticeably.
After four years, I moved back to Canada, where I continued not smiling for no reason. I've never been able to get back into the habit. I just feel stupid and unnatural smiling for no reason. People smile at me just because they see me, and they smile politely. I can't smile back. I just raise my eyebrows.
People now tell me constantly that I'm too sad, that I should smile more that I'm not happy. Now, there's some truth to that -- I do suffer from depression -- but that predates living in Turkey and it's only since then that anyone's accused me of being sad, or even noticed that I don't smile as much as I should. I've had to train my friends out of referring to me as grumpy.
My job is teaching English as a Second Language to students from all over the world. My Western students -- particularly the Latinos -- tell me daily (literally) that I don't smile enough. My East Asian and Eastern European students have never said a word in that direction. I just realized the divide now after watching this video.
This is Why Chefs are Obsessed with Making Homemade Mustard
I ate at a high end restaurant in a small village in France. Food was delicious -- and the small teaspoon of mustard that came on the side is the thing I remember the most.
The Hidden History of Korea's Printing Innovation
my uncle owned a typesetting shop that was made obsolete by the computer industry; at the end, I think they were doing church bulletins and wedding announcements and the like; it is now a Subway restaurant; progress?
my uncle worked for the providence journal for all his working life.working the presses, and his fingernails were permanently stained by the ink he used.
this brought back memories of my uncle paul, and made me a tad weepy.
thanks korean dude!

Jimmy Johns Robbery
My advice to would-be robbers of fast food restaurants: use a replica gun. The cashiers don't give a fuck, and you'll get in less trouble when you're caught.
Also, if you think you might get in a gunfight. You want to load your gun before you get there.
I dunno that he's stupid for jamming his gun. That happens. It would have taken him a second or two to unjam it, so if he were pointing it at me, I wouldn't be trying to think of using that advantage against him unless I was pretty damn sure he intended to shoot me or someone else.
On second watching: The robber is doing a lot of things wrong when he cocks his gun, so he doesn't have much experience with them (I have next to no experience, and I can even see what he's doing wrong--holding it wrong to cock it, not releasing the slide to let it return on its own spring force, which is probably the reason for the jam). Of course, all that probably makes him more dangerous rather than less.
Streamers big mistake of playing video that came w/ donation
People stream themselves eating in restaurants now? And people watch that? And donate?
