On the Guy Fawkes night following her deperature from number10 I remember my family burnt an effigy of Thatcher in Fawkes stead, chanting "Burn the Witch" and singing "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead." Certainly one of my stranger childhood memories.

What she's saying is that with a car, the wheels are turned via the axle, and to push the car forwards they must grip on the road and push the car, otherwise they just spin on the spot.

With these, the internal part is effectively turning the cabin bit against the inside of the wheel, and the wheel then moves forward or backwards just based on the weight of the internal portion pulling it around.

This contraption, while cool, is entirely impractical:

* How do you stop it? As in, how would you park this on a hill such that it wouldn't roll away?
* How do you see straight ahead?
* How do you make sure no-one inside it puts their hands into the spinning wheel of death?
* It's got waaay more size (especially height, good luck with multi-storey car parks) for less cabin space than a normal car
* The afore-mentioned poor turning circle.

Trying to sell this as actually being a practical vehicle is disingenuous.

For example - margaret thatcher was in power up until 1990 and elected 11 years before that. So i think it's fairly safe to say that she was in charge of "Britain" 20 years ago. Margaret thatcher was not a socialist - she was incredibly critical of it, and her policies reflected that.
Many of Britain's big state owned companies/whatever were privatised, john major followed and was himself a thatcherite, followed by labour around the millennium who were more willing to adopt in-place conservative economic policies.
So it's relatively safe to say that britain has become significantly less socialist since 30 years ago and was well into that stride 20 years ago.
But of course, he's just a political catchphrase bot, that's why he said "Britain's been defeated by socialism since...", there's no meaning behind it.
I'm no expert on politics (which makes me immediately more qualified than QM), but i think one word you couldn't apply to margaret thatcher's britain is socialist.

The closer she got to the bone, the more the patient wriggled and withdrew. Thatcher doggedly persisted, yet her pace wasn’t fast enough for right-wing Austrian economist Friedrich von Hayek, her idol and ideological mentor. You see, in 1981, Hayek had traveled to Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s Chile, where, under the barbed restraints of dictatorship and with the guidance of University of Chicago-trained economists, Pinochet had gouged out nearly every vestige of the public sector, privatizing everything from utilities to the Chilean state pension program. Hayek returned gushing, and wrote Thatcher, urging her to follow Chile’s aggressive model more faithfully.

In her reply, Thatcher explained tersely that “in Britain, with our democratic institutions and the need for a higher degree of consent, some of the measures adopted in Chile are quite unacceptable. Our reform must be in line with our traditions and our Constitution. At times, the process may seem painfully slow.”
