Instructor saves first time solo skydivers life in midair

shveddy says...

Even the smartest people can become "deer in the headlights" type stupid when they are overstimulated in an environment like a skydive. This guy couldn't pull his own chute only because he was new, scared, tense and overwhelmed once he lost control.

This guy wasn't on his first time as a solo skydiver, he probably had ten jumps or so and is clearly still over-amped from the whole experience. The worst thing you can do on a skydive is tense up and overcompensate all of your movements. All you need to do is relax and be symmetrical and you will stabilize thanks to the airflow. This is the exact opposite of what you have been taught your whole life where you need to fling your body's momentum around rather emphatically if you want to get anywhere at lower airspeeds (think doing a backflip off of a diving board, you need to emphatically kick your legs up and your head back - in skydiving it's all about smooth controlled movements that control airflow, not momentum).

The dude just freaked out and flailed about like an idiot. Human error, that's all.

The instructor is a certified badass for catching and saving the student as low as he did.

I am not trolling. If it seems like I am from my last post - then I must have done a poor job making my point - it happens - but it is not my point to troll. I was trying to show the fact that these days even a kid knows how to sweep a room.

It's not rocket science. Don't be a sheep and accept something because an "expert" told you something. Think for yourself. - if you were one of those nutcases on a rampage - don't you think you might be checking the corners before entering a room.

I was tipping around the issue, but flat out, I think this guy is capitalizing on fear and cashing in the checks. I am not saying he doesn't know his shit - I think he def does and is a genuine bad ass - but that doesn't mean these are good tactics, it means he gets paid more for teaching you this garbage than a 2 min lesson that says lock the door and turn off the lights if you are unarmed.

Having an instructor give you straight talk - like you need to grab his gun while forcibly stabbing his face/eyes and with your pen puts people out of their comfort zone and doesn't sell as well to corporations. These feel good vids like this one do sell well and give people a sense of security that is misplaced.

Prepare for the enemy you will be facing, not the one you wish you were facing..

These people are not getting the training they think are - well at least not from what I saw in these clips.

I will have to expand on what I posted later (at work now) - but I am sure that you are right that the guy clearly knows what he is doing. Most legit instructors are very well trained - but that is also why I feel this is a bit of misleading training - a very large part of this "training" is to allow these people to feel empowered (which does have value),

It's only a small excerpt but it's all I have to go on until I see more.

What I saw is that these two very scripted scenarios are based the assumption that the shooter is going to come in through the door like that - once that doesn't in fact happen it all falls apart. There are other many problems as well.

It's like when someone wants to show you a martial arts move they learned and ask you to grab their hand... then they say no wait - grab the other hand... because that's what they trained for.

It also seemed a very PG rated training.

Even if he takes out one person if the rest are gang-tackling him i.e doing something, then this advice strikes me a solid.

The point here is to take action. Also you're watching a small excerpt from a training course given by a guy who clearly knows what he's doing.

“Glimpse of True Nature & High Potential of Chi Power"

braindonut says...

I had a tai chi instructor (who was Chinese) who started my first class by showing videos like this. Then he stopped the video and said something to the effect of:

This is all a bunch of nonsense. None of this is real. Do not expect me to teach you anything like this.

The dude instantly won my respect. I was just there to learn a fun way to relax and because I thought it was beautiful. Apparently I was in the right place.

A Piano Lesson With Oscar Peterson

ZappaDanMan says...

I'm trained by the AMEB (Australian Musical Examinations Board). I learned more from this video, than a year with them at the Sydney conservatorium. They unfortunately made me, make learning music a chore. I had too many a heated conversation with instructors. It never felt like joy.
Oscar Paterson makes me want to learn again, what a difference a teacher makes.

Low Cost Solution To Landmine Clearance.

Drachen_Jager says...

@aaronfr

Yeah, I think I have some idea how to clear landmines. I was the only one in my mine warfare class to spot the anti-lift device the instructors had placed next to one of the mines in the test. Yes, there is some danger to it, but the thing about clearing landmines that way, is that when you're done, the area is 99% certain to be clear.

I lived in a heavily mined area for six months, so I think I know how aware people are in those situations. However, I don't expect a five year old kid to have that same discipline, and quelle surprise, most of those who are injured or killed by old minefields are children. I don't think your point here is relevant.

When these things are done rolling around the desert, what is the certainty that desert is clear? If they don't clear spaces so they're actually safe, what's the point? Randomly detonate a few mines?

There's a reason it's expensive to clear mines properly, and comparing these things to proper mine clearance, and then comparing the pricetag is laughable.

I do agree with you on one thing, there are a lot of misconceptions here, and they seem to all be on your side of the conversation.

He mentions in some of his other vids that he's a 42-year old construction worker. With no health insurance. Which is why he holds back when he shreds at the skate park.

Plane tries to land, but land won't have it

Lendl says...

That's pretty much how my first attempt at landing in a glider went. Except I only hit the ground once when I stalled it at about 10 feet. It was 25 years ago but I can still hear the instructor saying, "Oh fuck." because of the wooden seats in the glider and he had no cushion.

Nothing like gliders to teach you how to land tho...there's no going around to try again.

Handcuffed Man Shot, Killed Himself In Cop Car? -- TYT

TheSofaKing says...

No sarcasm. An exercise most Law enforcement instructors perform is showing recruits what a person is capable of doing while handcuffed. Behind the back doesn't limit you that much if the palms are facing each other. A person handcuffed in this fashion can still access and control a handgun, including shooting forwards or his own head.

I'm not making any comment on this specific incident because there are too many possibilities, but I'm just saying that what Cenk is saying is impossible is actually easily possible. >> ^Sagemind:

Um, Huh? (Sarcasm?)
>> ^TheSofaKing:
It's 100% possible to shoot yourself in the temple while handcuffed behind the back... regardless of what hand you are.
