9 year old shoots instructor with uzi at gun range

Fairbs says...

On my morning commute, I got to listen on the radio how it's that little girls right to fire an Uzi and how it was the instructors fault for not teaching her properly. So unfortunately, gun nuts will even defend this.

ChaosEngine said:

I would hope that's because even the most ardent pro-gun advocate would agree that giving a 9 year old an uzi is pants-on-head retarded. Letting her fire it on full auto and well, the outcome was pretty obvious, wasn't it?

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

bareboards2 says...

That self defense class I took? Where I learned some skills that are available to me to this day?

They didn't teach them to men. The class I was in was women only (except for the martial arts instructors, a mixed bag gender-wise.) But they consciously did not offer those same skills to men.

Precisely because of your advice here.Which is why they don't teach those self defense skills to men.

A little guy pushing his erect penis into my ass on a sunny day is not a physical threat to me. Hell, I could have just pushed him and sat on him, and the fight is over.

Crushing someone's genitals is not something you do unless it is NECESSARY.

It is not "either/or." It is appropriate response to the threat. It was inappropriate in that situation to physically assault that man.

Turnabout IS fair play. He did not hurt me physically. He hurt me psychically.

The appropriate response is a psychic blow back.

And if every girl was taught to stand their ground (take that, Florida!!!) with their voice, this shit would end.

I'm confused why it seems you think it's an either or situation. You turn around, knee him in the balls, hard, then as he crumples to the ground you repeat, loudly, 'THIS GUY RIGHT HERE IS AGRESSIVELY SEXUALLY TOUCHING ME, INTENTIONALLY, INAPROPRIATELY, WITHOUT MY CONSCENT.'
Take them down physically AND emotionally, it's what they were doing to you, no? Turnabout's fair play.

Wavepool Lifeguard Rescue

To add to what others have said, I worked as a swimming instructor when I was younger, and it's amazing how un-water-wise some people are.

For a start, if you can't swim, those rings are a terrible idea, especially for kids. They are way too easy to flip over, and then suddenly your kid is underwater and freaking out.

Everyone should be taught to swim in school.

How-to Disarm a Gunman

spawnflagger says...

I'd like to see a video where the gun is filled with blanks, and safety is off. (both should have proper hearing protection too). Then they demonstrate the same disarm technique and see if "the perp" can pull the trigger, or even if he can't, the gun might go off anyway during the disarm procedure. Then the instructor repeats this with several different students.

Not directly related - I wonder why you don't see more stories of muggers using tasers?

"but won't people be less inclined to be responsible if they have less freedom?"

You're making a claim that people will be less responsible. *you* need to prove that. I don't need to disprove it, however I have given plenty examples of how existing requirements on existing freedoms don't seem to lead to increased irresponsibility. Burden is on you.

"With gun control, you want to take people's freedom away to stop them from screwing up in the first place."

Again, I asked how people are less free by requiring something prior to exercising that freedom. You failed to answer that.

"How is making it harder to acquire or own a gun going to make people more responsible using them? That's all I was asking."

No, you're changing your argument. But I'll go ahead and pretend that you weren't attempting to dodge and answer it anyway. There is never any guarantee that anyone will be magically safer by taking a magic class or spending time with an instructor. It's a strawman argument to say that it would. There has never been any guarantee that any law will make anyone safer. We do it anyway because the public demands it. Will of the people and all that. Over 50 percent of the nation were in favor of SOME form of increased gun control post-sandy hook.

You're right, not all of those things I mentioned are necessarily rights, or at the very least, could be argued. But I also noticed you conveniently ignored the part about voting...which is a right. And even if an ID is never required to vote. You still have to register in order to vote.

There is no guarantee that requiring a test makes someone a safer driver. There is no guarantee that I'm going to survive the day if I get out of bed.
We don't legalize murder because some people ignore laws. We make it illegal anyway and incarcerate/execute those that break those laws and hope it provides an example of why not to do it. It's kind of what civilization is based on. If you've got a better answer, then you should publish some papers and get recognized as someone who revolutionizes sociology and criminal justice.

I'm going to play the odds and guess that you won't though.

@VoodooV who's "you guys"? What happened to arguing ideas?

Your understanding of freedom is quite puzzling to me. I'm not even questioning whether gun control is right or wrong.

Going to college or getting a job are not things people are entitled to (supposedly), there are no rights involved, so no freedom is being denied. Apples and oranges.

A driver's license is not about owning or using a car, but about driving in public venues. I could be wrong, but we don't need a license to drive a car in our own backyards, do we?

In any case, I don't think it's reasonable to just use the existence of a law that infringes on a person's freedoms as justification for a proposed law that restricts it even more.

Crime is on a whole other level, because it's usually a violation of someone else's rights.

Simply owning a gun, on the other hand, not only isn't a violation of anything, it supposedly provides protection against these violations.

How is making it harder to acquire or own a gun going to make people more responsible using them? That's all I was asking.

A rarely known dirty trick of war: Spiked Ammo

poolcleaner says...

How about we make spiked gun factories that make fruit instead of guns. And then we'd simply need to defend ourselves from bananas and kiwis and other semi-dangerous fruit types. That way we don't kill enemy combatants, we capture them; and when our own soldiers find these fruit in their own armories, they can consume them as nourishment.

Come on! It's brilliant, AND I know of the perfect training instructor for the job. Though he may actually kill you upon defending your fruit attack. Due to this risk, it's probably best to simply let enemy combatants find and distribute these arms without training in the operation of them.

Felicia Day Learns CPR: Drama Ensues

probie says...

I saw a video awhile back where her and a friend went to learn archery. I only made it about half way through and I continually felt sorry for the two archery instructors as FD and her friend were constantly cracking elf jokes (in fake elf ears no less). Sure the instructors were getting paid, but you could tell they'd rather be doing anything else.

I agree. She wears thin very quickly nowadays.

VoodooV said:

I used to completely swoon for her. but...dunno now. she just seems more annoying to me lately. Kinda felt bad for the CPR technician. Her antics just didn't really work for me.

Canadian-News-Anchors-Warning-To-Americans

detheter says...

Actually, I have read the details in the case, Canada is NOT a free for all where you can do whatever you want because you think you know better than everyone else. CANADA IS NOT AMERICA. You should properly store your firearms. There should be a trial regarding these charges, and if the situation (gun instructor, imminent threat to life) warrant that the charges be DROPPED in this case, I would find that to be fair. However, regulations such as these stop assholes from keeping their heat ready just in case they need to rapidly without thinking end a human life. You right wing Americans make me sick how you see everything in black and white, you've swallowed every lie told to you by the gun manufacturers and your right wing politicians you don't know how to see past your own blurring ignorance. But of course.... *I* must be wrong, and not the right wing wannabes at the SUN. LOL. Which is why the top search results for the story are all right wing papers beating the drums of war.

Ninja Woman

ChaosEngine says...

I've haven't had enough experience with it to give an informed opinion. I've seen people practice it, but never with an opponent. That doesn't mean it doesn't work though. As I said, I don't really want to give an opinion on something I have only a passing familiarity with.

To expand on what I said earlier, I have no idea if this woman has any legitimate martial arts background or not. Her website lists "extreme martial arts" which makes me dubious, and "qualified martial arts instructor" but it doesn't say in what style, or whose accreditation she's qualified with.

It's quite possible she could kick seven shades of shit out of me, but I wouldn't call what is demonstrated in this video martial arts.

She's still pretty awesome though. I would kill for that kind of flexibility and co-ordination, but I'm old now.

TYT - 5 Shot at "Gun Appreciation Day" Celebrations

BicycleRepairMan says...

Have you ever sat through a firearms safety course?

I have. And I have fired pistols, and smgs, and A3G3s, and m66s , and M84 , and MG3s. I dare say I have handled more weapons than most people have. I have cleaned and assembled all of these guns over and over.

So yes, I also know when a gun is dangerous, and when it isnt. When it can and cannot be fired, I understand the difference between a loaded and an empty gun.

You are still missing the point. I was saying people make mistakes. Thats it, thats all you need to know, we have , on tape, a professional police safety instructor, teaching a lesson on gun safety, SHOOTING HIMSELF. How much clearer can the point be made for us?
