Final Fantasy VII Epic Cockatiel Vs Chocobo battle!!!

shinyblurry says...

Sure, I had pretty much the same experience with 8..cool story that fell apart later. I also thought it was super annoying having to drain all of your spells from enemies. 9 was a good throwback to the glory days..again though it never seemed to hit its stride..just sort of sailed off into mediocrity. 10 was alright..I did like the story and characters. I thought the battles were ridiculously easy..I think I only died a few times the whole game. I didn't find out until later that there was a whole universe of side quests and fierce boss battles after you've completed the game. I think my brother put like 100 hours into that alone.

12 I didn't like the battle system..13 was way too umm..something..japanese? I don't know. I couldn't finish it either. I kind of wish they would make a new 2d final fantasy game..though the graphics are awesome I cant help feeling something vital is absent..

Probably some who will disagree but I think after FF7 the quality of Square games really plunged. I used to be the hardcore fan, even worked for them for a time, but I never had as much fun as I had with their lineup on the Snes..like Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana..or my all time favorite game, Final Fantasy 2

I agree a bit. Final Fantasy VIII had one of the coolest storylines up until mid third disc, I mean, a bunch of teenagers running around as combat pro's and getting paid for it? When you're 14, that's cool.
FFIX I never really got into, it took a turn for the weird with its art style, but the characters were memorable at least. The auction was kinda cool though.
FFX however, With the exception of most of yunas lines, and the ending sequence where tidus becomes a whiney bitch, that was a fantastic game. The Aeon system was cool, blitzball was freaking amazing, despite it being the first "Non-open world." Truly, I think FFX is one of my favourite Final Fantasy games, right up there with 7. I won't keep going into detail, but I did play FFXI for years, XII was interesting, but I couldn't actually finish XIII.

So let me make this crystal clear (I hope). You are more than welcome to dislike the game, obviously. You're more than welcome to complain about the game, and if your complaints are legitimate, I'll happily debate them. What annoys me is when a new FF game comes out and people are actually surprised by the formula as if they hadn't seen it twelve times before (more or less). It's clear they've seen it at least once or twice before, because they nearly always say that FFx is better, where x is usually the first FF game they've played. So surprise? Really?

Also, I don't think calling my argument a straw man helps. Let's take a look at a few examples:

"I quit the final fantasy series as soon as moved to the playstation. Just like Peter Griffin's critique on the Godfather, the Playstation series insists on itself. ... Most of all, I really liked the Jrpg's battles. There was an element of thought that was needed in order to be successful. It has since mutated into a very bland, almost mortal combat style of predictability."

In other words, FF sucks now and FF6 was better. The characters, plot, and development have been more or less the same for several games. Saying it insists on itself implies to me that you're expecting it to reach for something more, which I don't think was ever the case. Also, the battles in Final Fantasy games have never needed that much thought. You have more likely simply gotten better at these games.

"I don't have a problem with reviewing a game based on the first 5 hours. If the first 5 hours are that bad, shame on the developers; they get what they deserve. Seriously, 5 hours is generous... a game is lucky if I give it 5 minutes to pull me in before I decide to never play it again (*cough* Metro 2033 *cough*)."

What? A JRPG that takes longer than five minutes to get going? This should not be a surprise. You have pretty much dismissed the genre completely.

"I liked Final Fantasy 10. I hated the new combat in 12. It sounds like the combat in 13 is worse."

A variation on FF sucks now, FF10 was better. The combat in every Final Fantasy game has been different in one fashion or another, and FF13's system has to be played to be appreciated since it largely emphasizes quick reactions and decision making. In my opinion the system plays much better than it sounds or looks.

"Personally, I find myself angry and depressed upon each FF release because it's such a sad and pathetic commentary on the world we live in. Here we have a series built on bad storytelling, bad characters, bad plots, bad gameplay, and bad interface design and it's one of the most celebrated game franchises of all time."

Mischaracterizing the series does may be the problem here. Final Fantasy is primarily built on epic-ish plotlines and really pretty graphics. It's not stellar writing, but people seem to like it, so Square-Enix doesn't really improve it -- Yes, that's lazy of them. Gameplay and interface have changed with each iteration so these aren't really central to the series. The graphics get consistently better at every turn -- I don't see why this is a problem.

"If you're going to bash on the bashers you need something better than 'Stop complaining, the game is MEANT to be like this!' because that, believe it or not, is not a valid counter argument. The game depends on whether people find it fun. I can't make my own shit game and defend it by saying 'It's meant to be shit!' and expect people to stop bashing it/not liking it."

Okay, how about "why are you commenting on a game you clearly haven't played" or "why are you expecting something other than a JRPG when playing it"? I may not be able to level this one at you directly, but comments such as "The battle system *sounds* awful" and "The interface *looks* horrible" and "Why don't I know everything about a game after five hours" are missing the point in my opinion. At the end of the day, you have to play a game to get an accurate opinion on it, and if you're somehow expecting it to be different than other JRPGs then I don't know why you're wasting your time.

My goodness... That was WAY too long and COMPLETELY useless. I need some chocolate or something.

Evolution of Warcraft cinematics

fjules says...

It's really hard for me to decide which vidya has the best cinematics in the world: Final Fantasy or Warcraft series. I'd say Final Fantasy since FF13 just came out and the cinematics are mindblowing and a large amount at that, but then again give Blizzard a chance and they will produce something awesome!

Also, to those who say - wow, there is not such a big leap after W3. Well, obviously, because W3 cinematics pretty much achieved perfection. Only minor tweaks from there on, since almost everything looks perfectly.

Pretty much the same thing with Final Fantasy. A huge leap from FF7 to FF8, but then not that big difference starting from FFX-FF13.

Now it's not a matter of computer power, it's just a matter of manpower to produce a perfectly believable movie which would be 100% realistic!

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

Shepppard says...

Alright, brace yourself. This is gonna be long.

I've had a handheld almost as long as I can remember, we'd have SEGA Gamegears, little portable things..well, technically not little, it was like 8 inches wide and took 8 AA Batteries to power if you weren't using an AC cord.

From there I got a PSX for Christmas when I was 7, and started off playing Tomba and Jersey devil, eventually graduating to better known games like Tenchu and FFVII+

A year later, I got an N64 and Zelda OOT, had those for years and amounted a fairly impressive collection of games.

Sometime in this period I also came across the GB, GB Colour, and eventually the GBA.

When the PS2/Xbox launch came years later, I asked for a PS2 for Christmas, and for whatever reason my mom convinced me to get an Xbox (No idea why) Got DoA3 and Amped as the two games for that...a month later for my birthday I got Max Payne and Silent hill 2..which scared the everloving shit out of me.
(I was the only person who had an Xbox out of all my friends, and we played the original halo so much I had to buy 4 different copies of it because of how scratched they got)

Year after that I got a PS2 for xmas, and FFX..and probably some other stuff that I actually don't remember.

Later in 2003ish, I bought FFXI and that's what started me down the road of MMo's, I bought it for PS2 and had a special Keyboard/controller thing that hooked into the USB slot for the console.

My xbox got moded because I rarely went on live, and the mod that was placed gave me a crapton of original NES and SNES games, as well as a few PSX rips.

I also got a gamecube, prettymuch for the sole reason of Smash bro's, but I also have a copy of fire emblem kicking around somewhere.

Acquired a PsP sometime in this timeframe aswell.

When the 360 was released in 2005, I bought the "Pro" console, and a copy of oblivion to go with it.

Some months down the road, my friend got interested in MMo's too, and wanted to try WoW, so we got the $2 demo disc and went our separate ways home to install it. Well, our family only had 1 shitty computer up til that point (it was bought in 2001) and didn't have a DvD drive, so I bought my own computer..can't remember the specs, but it was basically a piece of crap.

From there I played WoW consistantly for about 2 years, and off and on for another 3.

I also decided to upgrade my video card this year..Went and bought an ATI..something, got it home, installed it myself (Was the first time i'd ever opened my computer) and found out that my computer wouldn't turn on after that. Half hour later, went back to Futureshop and the guy told me that I needed to upgrade my power supply to a 450w to power the card.. wasn't happy, but I sprung for it.

After this, I installed and tried out Vanguard (to test the new video card with a brand new MMo) the day after, I uninstalled vanguard and set it on fire.

Nov 19, 2006. Actually lined up at a walmart to buy a Wii.. worst investment of my life.

In 2007 I bought a 60G Ps3 because they went on sale due to them only making the 20 and 80 after that.

2008 my 450w power supply died, and in attempting to fix it, I managed to fry a couple other aspects of my PC, and was forced to buy a new one.

I improved it to a 750w Supply and bought an extra 2 gigs of ram, and an Nvidia 8800 GTS 512mb, and tried AoC out when it launched, then WAR.

EvE, Richard Gariotts Tabula Rasa, CoH/CoV, FFXI(pc) Pirates of the Burning Sea, EQ2, and LoTRO all fit in there somewhere, too..but not sure where. So do NDS, NDSi, and an Ipod touch.

I've got a Pre-order for Aion (yay beta key!) and i'm currently working on Empire:Total War on my PC.

Overall..I'd have to say I actually prefer FPS' on console, I prefer twich shooting with my thumbs. RTS wins out PC, and some RPG's (Fallout, ect) are also on my PC..but the majority of my games fall onto my consoles.

..Overall, i've probably got over $10,000 worth of video game crap all in one room..

Final Fantasy X Yuna's Dance

This game cost $32,000,000 to make

Shepppard says...

Final Fantasy VII introduced me to the series, I was..9, when it came out, and it was the first time I played a video-game with that much story to it / character depth, ect.

I can't remember where its from, but a website basically said why FF VII also had one of the greatest baddies of the series, "Men like him because of his bad-assery, and his 8-foot sword. Women like him because of his long silver hair, his good looks, and his 8-foot sword."

Final Fantasy 8 Was good..until around the mid 3rd disc, then the story went completely downhill

Final Fantasy 9 was alright, got back to more of a decent storyline

and then..we have FF X. It was alright for a while, I mean, how can you not love a game where one of the main characters is voiced by Bender Bending Rodriguez.

Then we move on to one of my favourite characters, the drunken 2-handed sword wielding badass from beyond the grave...

Then we have tidus. The Luke Skywalker of final fantasies. Never, has there been such a whiney bitch in a video game before, or after final fantasy X.
Half the time, my party didn't even have him in it. For all I'm concerned, Tidus could go jump of a bridge, and never return to the final fantasy series.
Unfortunately, he does in FFX-2 apparently..never played it though.

But this scene..has to be the worst one in final fantasy history. Good sift, I'll watch and hate it frequently.
