This aircraft crashed during takeoff on 13.01.1989 in Aden (Yemen) due to premature retraction of the landing gear. Within 8 months it was repaired on the spot and on 12/12/1989, under its own power, was returned to Kiev for major repairs. Since then, it is with us, at the Antonov Design Bureau.
Almost all cargo planes have their western analogues (An-12 and C-130, An-124 and C-5), but there are no analogues for the An-22 or An-225.

I think there are aspects of this that fall into the realm of philosophy.

I personally don't think we can ever have "The Truth" in that ultimate sense. Pretend for a minute that the SUVAT equations (the equations of motion) are completely accurate. I can drop a ball from a certain height and you can time it and we'll find to some degree of accuracy that the equations were right.

The ball and the floor didn't need to calculate anything. Whilst me and you sit there with a stopwatch technical manual, assorted tape measures to find the distance, expensive cameras to figure out when i dropped the ball..... Whilst we are tying down an uncertainty, the ball and floor have already done it.

When you get right down to it, we simply cannot know an exact time. We can never know an 'exact' anything, because now we need to discuss where the "ball" ends and where the "floor" begins on a molecular level. And no matter how much we agree, the uncertainty principle gets us in the end - we don't and can't know the exact location of fundamental particles. An "exact" anything ends up being a conceptual thing that we can't ever test.

But where i'm going with this is that we're kind of talking about the nature of understanding. We know the volume of a sphere if we know its radius, but how do we create the same sphere accurately? Our brains don't have a resolution, but the tools we use in reality do - reality itself quite possibly has a resolution. We think of minecraft as a blocky, low resolution simulation of an analogue reality. Similarly, i think maths is an 'analogue' (in that it can be "exact") simulation of a limited resolution reality - reality only looks analogue when you don't look very closely.

All that is to say, we DO understand the ball dropping and hitting the floor, but "exactness" is a thing that only exists in the act itself. The only thing left for us to decide is what we consider accurate enough.

Perhaps "god" wanted to know what would happen if he set off a big bang. He sat down, calculated it all out in the language of the gods (the language of perfection; maths) and realised that due to uncertainty, the only way to know exactly what would happen was for it to actually happen. (Douglas Adams?)

colour grading as in DI is "new" and related to digital film but colour timing, which is the analogue method, goes back to the start of film making.

i've done work for several marvel films, their DI is generally pretty subtle. the raw footage def. has blacks (and negative values in the blacks). the new cameras used wont change this unless they want to change it. the colour gamut has been wide the whole time. OCIO colour may have a certain effect but i can't see it having the colour effect wanted here.

@AeroMechanical is exactly right. the new cameras aren't going to change shit. they're still going to grade the movies to be consistent with past movies. and they've fully had the latitude to grade them in a more vibrant manner the whole time.

and as far as rereleasing them as "UHD Blu-Ray box set" (i'm assuming 4K UHD), they can't. they were all done in HD or 2K (at least the ones i've worked on). uprezing is possible (4K outside of a theatre is actually pretty bullshit, you can uprez HD uncompressed to 4K without that much effect) but resolution doesn't change colour grading/DI.

This seems good enough that it reaches the uncanny valley-analogue of movie scripts; it's so smart that you actually realize how damn dumb it is. If it was your broadly dumb, average scifi movie, you wouldn't have to think about it, but now you have to confront that if we ever do invent AI's, we'll have to own up to the fact that we once spent time and resources worrying over the hypothetical scenario: will they want to bone us?

The moment of static (esp the hiss sound) creates a naturalistic feeling pause/reset between each unrelated snippet of humour. A "comedy beat" if you will.

If this video was edited with the smooth silent transition one gets with modern digital broadcast it would detract significantly from the overall effect i.e. beat, reset, beat, reset, beat etc.....

Analogue static does this job beautifully and despite being dated is still almost universally understood/recognised by viewers. Perhaps another less anachronistic technique might have worked (with "boop" noises or something) but the fact remains that this whole static thing does the job wonderfully (for most of us anyway).

It's not "dumbass" when it works this well and the last 70-80 years of visual media didn't just disappear from the cultural memory when digital came along.

If you think you can do better then be my guest, maybe you might find a way that's even funnier and changes peoples attitude. Until then the artistic choices of others stand on their own merits and personally I can't think of an editing technique that would fit this style of vid better.


In summary, it's comedy not a documentary and out of place anachronism is a well practised and successful comedy technique (i.e. the very fact its so out of place is part of the reason its so funny). Why does that bother you so much???

Yes the narrative is tailored towards Americans and it is very very persuasive. I believe parts of it are true. I'd be interested in hearing what an Australian thinks about the NRA perspective. All you have to do is visit the NRA web site and look in the archives. I'm sure you can find many different news reports and videos covering the Australia and Mexico situation from their perspective. There will be more coverage of the Australia situation because it is considered a better analogue for what can happen with legislation. In general, there isn't much regard for whatever Mexico does legislatively. Mexico is only brought up as proof of a cultural phenomenon or confirmation of human nature from their perspective.

First I've never said anything about recording straight to vinyl. Second your just plain wrong that no one records to analog anymore. Yes it's cheaper and easier to do digital. But many sound engineers still prefer using analog in the mastering process. Do a simple search...you'll find plenty of articles and videos by sound engineers discussing the still on going debate (yes in 2012) of analog vs digital.

Yes they use a computer while cutting the master...but they clearly say the computer is "monitoring" the process and makes adjustments to the "spacing" between the grooves. Letting the computer make adjustments to the "space" between the grooves has nothing to do with the transfer of the audio to the grooves.
