The 'both candidates are the same' argument is appealing to ignorant people, because it gives them a feeling of superiority without actually having to have any understanding of the candidates or politics in general. If you ask them to explain what each candidate's policy positions are in detail, the ruse evaporates and they are immediately humbled.
