What does this symbol mean? (Manji / Swastika)

As an American living in Thailand, I sometimes see Buddhist (and other Eastern religion) symbols that are pretty close to being swastikas. In many cases, I think that is done without knowledge of the similarity to the Nazi swastika and the history thereof.

BUT, there are plenty of cases where it *isn't* the "manji" symbol but clearly the Nazi swastika, and very clearly knowingly associated with Nazism, Hitler, etc. From this video, it seems that particular use is much more common in Thailand than Japan, although I can't even hazard a guess as to why that would be.

Anyway, interesting bit of culture.

I don't really dislike or get offended by any of the interviewee's thoughts here, but the older gentleman is very well reasoned, logical, and cool about it while also being conscious about the potential for misunderstandings that can be avoided if we know a little history.
