MarineGunrockI like Tancredo's stance on immigration. I think it's bullshit that I have to "Press one for English." I think it's bullshit that people walk freely across our unprotected borders and leech off of our systems - costing our courts money, getting free medical care and all the rest. I have zero problem with immigration - immigrants founded our nation, they built it up from nothing to the superpower that it is today. If you want to live here, great! Just come here legally, and learn English.
doogleThe term for that is "reasonable accommodation". The province of Quebec has public hearings currently on that issue, and it's a growing issue in the rest of Canada as well.
Of course countries get to determine their criteria for immigration. But borders in the "have" countries are to keep people out, and in the "have not" countries, it's about keeping people in.
The US needs to understand if they are facilitating the possibilities to get the world's rich and the world's talented, their families come too. And so do undesirable people with the undesirable goods.
MarineGunrockqualm, you seem to disagree with everything I say. Great! That's what makes for a rich conversation. But for once can you actually leave a comment and tell me what is on your mind?
ravenMGR... resentment for accommodating the speakers of other languages is, at this point, ridiculous... you have to recognize that this is not a culturally nor linguistically homogeneous country, it never has been and never will be... While I am in no way proposing that schools should suddenly stop teaching English to children or anything crazy like that, or that we should suddenly stop doing business or official services in it ... you have to recognize that there are large numbers of people within the states that do not speak English (at least consider, if you will, the older generations who immigrate here with their families, and end up not going out into the workplace and therefore, never needing to learn English- what if Abuelita needs an ambulance?? How the fuck is she suppose to call one if she can't speak to someone?), and that need must be met for them, especially in the are of communications like phone services.
If anything, try to be a little open minded, and look at all that bilingual signage as a chance to expand your own horizons and learn something.
MarineGunrockAll I was trying to say is that if I was to take a trip to Peru, I wouldn't expect them to provide to my lingual needs. But I really appreciate the fact that you actually chose to discuss this. You made some very valid points.
