The Phenomenon of the Singing Sand

Scientists aren't sure what causes it, but there are only about 30 places on earth where you can hear the singing sand. It is called the sound that has mystified generations.

only 30 places in the WORLD, really? they must have their numbers wrong, because the beach near my summer house in Latvia has singing sand and there's at least 4 that I know of (have visited, have heard the 'singing') on the ~1200km long coast of the Baltic sea in Latvia. ha, I guess they count the whole Baltic sea region as one location! anyway, the notes here tend to be higher than the booms heard in this video.

I grew up on the West Coast near Carmel State Beach in California. Carmel has squeaky sand. If you stomp on it, it squeaks louder and at a higher pitch.

I've also noticed that the sand is more fine than other sand and therefore softer and "stickier." It's no good for skim boarding.
