An idea of Sagan's that I heard when I was in highschool always stuck with me... Say we genetically engineer a weedy plant to be able to grow and flourish on the inhospitable face of Mars, and seed that barren world for future generations to enjoy the plant's eventual by-products a more oxygen rich, wetter, and more stable atmosphere.
