Farhad2000Adam Curtis = More education in 2 hours then 2 years in University.
FedquipOh I agree with that one, "Century of the self" is an amazing documentary, this little clip simply blew my mind the first time I heard it.
gluoniumForgive me, but I do suspect that a significant quantity of the Century of the self documentary that this clip is taken from is actually, well, bullshit. Now, I'm not saying I didn't like the show, I did. In fact, I liked it alot, too much really and this made me suspicious. Why did I like it so much? Was it because it presented its material in a lucid totally rational and interesting way? no not really. I think I liked it because its answers were so easy, pat even. Curtis seems able to wrap up every human impulse and irrationality of the 20th century with his all consuming social theories and that makes me skeptical, because I doubt that is actually possible....
FedquipYou could be right gluonium, I do respect the work Adam Curtis, but it's cool to be skeptical in fact it's encouraged to be skeptical. However this clip in particular is a well documented piece of history and very much not bullshit.

It's a documentary about psychology so further analysis is always encouraged
gluoniumyeah I'm not saying the historical facts of the clip are bullshit, clearly not. just possibly that the claim that because smoking prevalence can be manipulated by making it seem sexycool through advertising, then the entire US population will just as easily, obliviously and eagerly swallow any line of neocon newspeak (though, one may argue that that is in fact exactly what has happened in the past few years here). seems too easy. but again, I did really like the very thorough history in the program, there were many things which I was ignorant of before seeing it. I especially like Curtis' use of the BOOIOIOINGGGG noise every time some blatantly stupid folly is revealed.
choggieThe most poigniant aspect here perhaps, the symbol addicts that we domesticated primates are. Symbols used to spin all manner of excess, irrationality, and realities.....The fact that one event, staged and executed with the gullibility of humankinds' nature understood, should make any and all wary of a bill of goods that strays too far from the arena of common sense....
Perhaps issues gravely affecting our collective quality of life
like
-petroleum being the only major source extant to provide power
-an abundance of religions which spring forth from the same collective unconscious
-the absurdity to most that there were and are, people who orchestrate events on a planetary scale, to amass empire
-Global Warming
or whatever else reeks of irrationality.....
so, who thinks Kennedy was killed by Oswald......anyone???
