The Domestic Front- Study for Test Tone and Retinal Burn

YouTube Description:

This piece was created especially for use in the Spanish "Puntos y Rayas" festival for this summer. The rules of the festival were that you had to make an audiovisual work using only lines and dots- no patterns, no quirky 'narrative' elements, no 3D rendering, just these absolute basics.

Many of the visuals from this piece are built using computer software which 'interprets' an audio signal and then converts it to a stroboscopic set of visuals. These visuals were originally too 'patterned' for me, so I used a 'wave generator' filter to convert the results into more line-based forms. You will notice I have restricted myself almost totally to garish pink, green and yellow as the color scheme for this animation- a color scheme almost exclusively associated with 'punk rock' subculture. Even the other visual elements in this piece, like repeating 'color halftone' dots, and the overall sense of amateurism and confrontation, may bring this 'punk' d.i.y. aesthetic to mind. This is clearly something that can be ascribed to a certain place and time, and when contrasted with the audio portion of the piece, things can become quite confusing- since the audio tones are brutally minimal, convey no 'cultural information' and seem more suited towards achieving some sort of pure trance state than identifying with a particular subculture. So this piece is a kind of test / challenge for the audience- will they notice the cultural hints right away , or will they be able to ignore them and ascribe their own meaning to this piece? This piece asks which is more important: identification with a cultural tribe, or personal, individual immersion in pure sight and sound?

All audio and visuals by Thomas Transparent- a hi-res version may eventually be available for download from www.belsona-strategic.com
