This movie was made using an emulator with savestates and slowdown. It's meant to show the game pushed to its limits.

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/movies.cgi?id=342 Notes:
Once again, Genisto has surpassed the presumed limit of tool-assisted SMB3 speedrunning. This movie beats Super Mario Bros 3 in only 10 minutes and 35 seconds, which is almost 30 seconds faster than the famous Super Mario Bros 3 timeattack by Morimoto.
Not only is this run amazingly fast, it also manages to get 99+ extra lives magnificently while waiting in the auto-scrolling stages.
Mario passes through walls in the final fortress, a trick that was recently discovered by Bisqwit.
This movie: - Aims for fastest time - Uses warps - Abuses programming errors in the game - Ignores semi-important goals in the game

JAPRsays...seems like it's hacked somehow to make him invincible; a lot of those wrenches go through his character and he's within the blast radius of one of the bobombs at one point.
loorissays...it's tool assisted: no real hacks, just uses frequently save&reload sometimes frame by frame...
