After reading through an online friends web breakdown on why Chernobyl happened, I decided to see what the mainstream was reporting on the event. It is a very good break down on the "whys" from a technical standpoint, a little more in-depth than the video..the video goes a bit more in-depth in other areas, more towards the operators. My friends page has a better breakdown on the health effects without all the "seconds from disaster" hyperactivity (for instance, you can visit Pripyat and people inhabit many of the exclusion zones)
http://www.hiroshimasyndrome.com/chernobyl.html RBMK designs are bad designs, inherently unstable due to positive feedback characteristic. Modern (western) reactors have a negative feedback system, as reactors get hotter fission becomes less likely, the Chernobyl reactor is the opposite. This positive feedback loop of heat and steam can cause reactor heat to rise out of control in seconds. Western reactors don't have this type of problem.
Heading back to school for nuclear engineering myself in the next year or so, hopefully to make reactors completely self regulating. Questions, comments or concerns on nuclear or energy in this thread or on my own page are always welcome (and encouraged!)
