Reckless snowboarder triggers an avalanche at Lake Tahoe

NSFW for swearing...

From www.SFGate.com

"Before Christian Michael Mares, a sponsored snowboarder, started an avalanche at a Northern California ski resort, he said he was just looking for a “nice cliff to drop.”
He said he didn’t think his ride would set off a snowslide at Sugar Bowl Resort near Norden last Friday, and he definitely didn’t think he would be facing trespassing charges.
“No one wants to try to start an avalanche,” the 29-year-old said. “That’d be absolutely crazy.”
But Mares inadvertently set off a snowslide in an off-limits area of the ski resort Friday afternoon, and now, the Placer County Sheriff’s Department is involved."

The area was marked out of bounds; he doesn't pre-scout it; he isn't apparently carrying an airbag or a beacon; he doesn't display any judgement as far as I can tell...

The Tahoe Basin folks are a bit sensitized because ski patroller has been missing and is presumed dead in the same general basin. No one is saying this avalanche killed the patroller; but the folks who have to rescue people who place themselves and others at risk by skiing at ski areas in the out of bound areas are annoyed (Of course, if he had hiked into the deep back country and been buried; no one would even know. Or care. Or be there to rescue him).

This guy got off with a sprained ankle so far but...the Placer County district attorney may prosecute...
