Raw Food : the ultimate diet!

You'd think it's back to Neanderthal cuisine, but these folks are healthy as hell. Their best argument is : once cooked, food can lose up to 85% of its nutritional value. They also crave on sprouts, living foods that are full of pure vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids. Nuts are a go as well. Although this person (Angela Stokes) went vegan at the same time, raw unprocessed meet is "allowed" in their menu.

Gotta love those salads, though!

Not saying this is unhealthy... but just to put this in perspective you need about half a pound of walnuts (cheap high calorie nut) or nine avocados (the highest calorie-content fruit/veggie) a day to get your energy requirements.

I think she probably lost most of her weight because of low caloric content. The non-cooked factor probably doesn't have much to do with it.

It's hard to stick with it for me.

I've tried it a few times, and it works. I usually feel better, lose weight, and have more energy, but then one day I'll just have to have a hamburger or some pizza or stir-fried rice, and once I've done that, it's hard to settle for just veggies again.

This link contains a very comprehensive comparison of the value of eating raw versus cooked food.

The paper goes into a lot of detail but the most general conclusions are:

  • Virtually all foods contain more nutrients in the raw state. On the other hand, the differences are not very great: ranging from approximately 10-25% in the case of most vitamins, while the difference is negligible (almost zero) with respect to minerals.

  • However, there are also digestibility, antinutrients/toxicity, and bioavailability to take into consideration when assessing how many nutrients can actually be assimiliated from a particular food. Cooking can affect these considerations positively or negatively, depending on the circumstance.

There is also an interesting comment with regard to caloric content:

"An additional issue is the difficulty on all-raw vegan diets of getting enough calories due to bulk. Cooking coarse veggies makes them softer, and easier to eat more. While this might make overeating easier, it also allows one to get more nutrients as well. Most vegetables provide, on a caloric basis, relatively little nutrition and thus require consumption of very large amounts daily if one bases their diet primarily around them. It is hard to eat nutritionally significant amounts of coarse veggies when raw--but it's easier when cooked."

Actually i just saw a program on this on Danish television, where doctors and nutritionists warned against this diet, because it often caused a severe deficiency of protein and other stuff that only becomes digestible to humans through cooking. they cited several cases of parents forcing a raw-vegan diet on their children, giving them malnutrition and hormonal and developmental problems

I'll look for some English sources after i've had some eggs & bacon.

I keep a 3 lb bag of unsalted, generic brand peanuts in my desk drawer. Think it cost 3.99... for 5440 calories, very good value for money. 13g fat, 7g protein, 7g carbs. A bit high fat - but definitely better than anything out of the vending machine. No transfats. Having to shell them means you can't just eat a handful
Walnuts and almonds are high in omega-3s which are very good for you- http://www.videosift.com/video/Dramatic-Effects-of-Omega-3-on-Rat-Brain-Function

Ugh. SHE LOST WEIGHT BECAUSE SHE ATE LESS. THERE IS NOTHING MAGICAL ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT.

We have been cooking food for a very, very long time and it has been a factor in our evolution. Eating raw food isn't better for you than eating cooked food. You can eat a very healthy diet of cooked food. This dumb bitch's problem was that she was eating a lot of junk food.

And, yes, there are currently raw food vegans in prison because they killed their or endangered one or more of their children. There was recently a couple who wouldn't even feed their newborn breast milk.

Food is the most powerful drug known to man.

Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram, protein 4 calories per gram, and fat 9 calories per gram. At a protein to carbohydrate ratio of 0.70, the body exhibits an optimal hormonal response.

40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat (emphasis on monounsaturated) at every meal will give you more energy than you've ever had in your life.
