Qased: Iran's 2000lb smart bomb

Qased (Persian:قاصد meaning "Messenger") is a 2000-pound (900 Kg) Iranian developed smart bomb. This looks like one of the older-style TV/IR Guided Smart bombs. The new ones are guided by GPS.

A TV/IR-guided bomb has either a conventional television video camera or an infrared camera (for night vision) mounted to its nose. In remote-operation mode, the controller relays information through radio signals to a human operator, who is usually onboard the bomber plane. The remote operator relays commands to the control system to steer the bomb through the air -- the bomb acts something like a remote-control plane. In this mode, the operator may launch the bomb without a specific target and sight, and then pick up the target from the video as the bomb gets closer to the ground.

Notice in this video they are being "delivered" by an F4 Phantom II jet. Iran had purchased over 225 Phantoms during the Iran/Iraq war, many of which were part of the Iran-Contra scandal that Ollie North sold them to fund the Nicaraguan war. Iran has also purchased the extremely agile and powerful F-14 Fighters in the late 70's.

But you also have to admit that F4 Phantoms and F-14s are hardly a match for american air superiority, not to mention that Iran's air fleet is woefully undermanned and short of parts to keep the planes in the air.

Yes, that has crossed my mind as well. US Air dominance would not be a problem if the US Military ever has to engage Iran's air force. I'll bet that half of the fleet which Iran owns is being used for parts for the other half.
