On Thin Ice: Canada's Commercial Seal Hunt

Farhad2000says...

The Canadian government is trying to pass a law that will make it so nobody will see next year's seal hunt. This is how you hunt seals. Warning the video you are clicking on is very graphic. Viewer Discretion is advised.

Canadian sealing regulations include, among others:

* The minimum and maximum dimensions of both the clubs and the hakapiks that can be used;
* The minimum caliber of rifle and minimum bullet velocity that can be used;

And the following stipulations:

* “Every person who strikes a seal with a club or hakapik shall strike the seal on the forehead until its skull has been crushed”;
* “No person shall commence to skin or bleed a seal until the seal is dead”;
* “[A] seal is dead when it has a glassy-eyed, staring appearance and exhibits no blinking reflex when its eye is touched while it is in a relaxed condition”;
* “Every person who fishes for seals for personal or commercial use shall land the pelt or the carcass of the seal”;

I think this important for everyone to see, it's easy to turn a blind eye to this kind of thing. Especially when it is clear that there are many (including the Canadian government) who would like it that way.
But don't forget, these hunters would not be slaughtering seals if there was no market for their pelts. Many of them are fishermen who can no longer make a living due to the decimated oceans. I think it's more important to make sure that protesting of the seal hunt is directed at the people who provide the demand : the manufacturers of the clothing made from the skins of these animals, and the brands, celebrities and stores that sell them. And the people who buy them!

'If I can't shoot rabbits, I can't shoot fascists.'

Good luck getting a filiming permit in an abattoir too.

Downvote for preachy anti-seal hunt propaganda.

If a baby seal had a chance, it would kill you and everyone you care about.
