August 31, 1922 marks the day when a huge volcanic eruption destroyed the town of Nixapa.

"When the San Salvador volcano erupted, balls of fire destroyed what was once Nixapa, now Nejapa."

The fireballs are used because locals say the hot lava that flowed from the volcano was actually the local Christian Saint Jeronimo fighting the devil with balls of fire.

Today, townspeople celebrate by throwing burning, gasoline-soaked rags at each other. Surprisingly, the reports of injuries are quite low.
