Mariza is currently the best/most famous fado singer in Portugal, and her voice is quite amazing.
This song, created by Mariza from a poem by Amália Rodrigues (the diva of fado, now deceased), receives what is probably the best live performance.
Watch 'till the end, 'cause she gets quite emotional, and it's worth it.
Lyrics translation:
É meu e vosso este fado (It's mine and yours this Fado)
destino que nos amarra (A binding destiny)
por mais que seja negado (No matter how denied)
às cordas de uma guitarra (Forged to the guitar strings)
Sempre que se ouve um gemido (Whenever one hears a lament)
duma guitarra a cantar (Of a guitar's song)
fica-se logo perdido (One is instantly lost)
com vontade de chorar (With a longing to weep)
Ó genta da minha terra (Oh my homeland's people)
agora é que eu percebi (Now I understand)
esta tristeza que trago (This sadness inside me)
foi de vós que a recebi (It came from thy)
E pareceria ternura (And it would be tender)
se eu me deixasse embalar (If I let myself lullaby)
era maior a amargura (The bitterness would be greater)
menos triste o meu cantar (But less tearful my singing)
Ó genta da minha terra (Oh my homeland's people)
Ó genta da minha terra (Oh my homeland's people)
agora é que eu percebi (Now I understand)
esta tristeza que trago (This sadness inside me)
foi de vós que a recebi (It came from thy)
